    I love that they touched on people who may not be able to go vegan due to health reasons and needing to eat meat to survive. I struggle with ARFID which is an eating disorder common in Autistic people. I can only make myself eat a handful of things without getting sick or having a meltdown. Most those things involve meat. I wanted to go vegan but I would literally starve myself to death if I cut meat out of my diet. So instead I went vegan with clothes, cosmetics, and any other products that weren't food. Basically I just tried to ethically source everything else in my life to make up for the fact that I can't make myself stop eating meat. Been doing that for a few years and it's been going well. I'm also trying more foods now and eventually I hope to expand my diet in the future so I can eat less meat.

    It's good that you talk about this :) I would say being vegan includes not seing animals as commodities, so I view taking hens' eggs as taking what is not mine. Same for honey, which is the bee's food supply. Also bee keeping is actually a threat to wild bees, which are essential for pollinisation. I'm not even talking about the practices of cutting the wings of queen bees, crushing the males to get semen, burning the hives on winter to get new ones...

    Great video! I love that you recongnize and respect the fact that there are many ways or degrees to which you can live vegan/ vegetarian. It does not help to gain more vegans/ vegetarians if you attack them for not doing it right or not being strict enough

    A few things about bears/pandas:
    Most bears are omnivores, not strictly carnivores. Bears eat fish, smaller mammals, bee larvae (it's not the honey they're after), berries, among other things.
    Pandas are herbivores, but since this is a relatively recent adaption (and they are used to having food in abundance) they haven't developed a typical herbivore digestion system (yet). (Their bowels are too short, among other things.) They also make babies just fine in the wild, but people didn't realize that they needed to properly get to know each other before they would bump uglies. (Crazy concept, right?)
    Hope this was informative, and please correct me if I've gotten something wrong. Cheers.
    PS: Herbivorous animals eat other animals too, though just a minimal amount. Squirrels eats eggs, deer and cows eat birds, etc.

    I appreciated that you talked about various issues of being vegan.
    The biggest concern that I have about not eating meat is getting enough iron in my diet, so I was disappointed that you didn't address it when you talked about protein.

    • @cloudthief8918
      @cloudthief8918 Před 4 lety +3

      There are lots of plant based sources of iron. The only real issue is that non-heme iron is harder for the body to absorb which means you either have to take a supplement, or eat more food/food that is more dense in this nutrient.
      As long as you eat a balanced diet, you should be getting enough iron, and to me eating more food is a big win :)
      Edit: added a bit

    • @cla_rence
      @cla_rence Před 4 lety +2

      Lentils, certain types of leafy vegetables and oats are rich in iron. Vitamin C helps with the absorption on non-hem iron, and since the vast majority of food eaten by vegans contains a lot of vitamin C, you should be fine :)

    • @sumwerenothere
      @sumwerenothere Před 4 lety +1

      plenty of ways to get iron in a vegan diet- it's a simple google. Doesn't need to be greatly discussed. If ur so worried about it tho then take a vegan multivit or iron tablets.

    • @AdelMyBell
      @AdelMyBell Před 3 lety +2

      I was severely anemic before I became vegan. I’ve had food with eggs and such over the past 7 years in times of destitute but I’m not anemic anymore, i eat leafy greens and lots of lentils and such... I used to take iron pills, now I dont. Good luck and do a little research to find your favorite foods

    • @shuepsx652
      @shuepsx652 Před 3 lety +3

      The problem is that not every person metabolizes things the same way and we are still learning about it.
      As the others comments pointed out, there are iron vegan sources, but the bioavailability it's not the same and you cannot know if the plant sources would be enough for you until you try it. I was anemic on a vegan diet despite getting plenty of iron from food plus supplements but I'm not when I get iron from animal sources even though the total amount of iron in my food it's a ridiculous fraction of that and without supplements

    They said at the beginning that vegans *don't* want to get rid of animals. It's the exact opposite for me though. I think that breeding animals for any reason (other than possibly to balance the ecosystem and help the environment) is wrong. We have bred cows to have farmed animals to benefit us without any regard for their wellbeing.
    Animals like hens grow far to quickly for their legs to support their weight and lay way to many eggs, even in backyard farms. It's humans that created beings with such a great capacity for suffering and it's us that keep them in existence. Cows, hens and pigs do nothing for the ecosystem so isn't it better to just let them die out?
    Edit: As for bees, I think beekeeping is good, but taking the honey is still horribly exploitative. Just because we do something to help the bees (although it doesn't actually help the individuals, just the environment at large) doesn't mean we then have any right to take their stuff.

    • @sumwerenothere
      @sumwerenothere Před 4 lety +2

      well yes in a vegan world we would absolutely stop the commercial breeding of these animals who we've bred to the point of harming their life quality. It's not "getting rid of animals" per se, it's acknowledging the harm we have done and stopping the practices that contribute to it. (including non farmed animals like cats& dogs). At the end of the day veganism can easily be defined as: anti-speciesism.

    Cooking vegan is so easy and fun but have the mind of including different things as fruits,nuts and vegetables instead of just focusing on the animal products you don’t want in your diet.

  • @loic.bertrand

    When you say that you couldn't get all essential amino acids by just eating beans for example, that's true but you wouldn't get any fiber or vitamin C by eating only animals ^^ every food is incomplete in a way ;)

    i know i'm a year late here. but i'm studying to become a production gardener and for that you have to study pesticides ect and all of those chemicals and organic things we use.
    all things even the products made from organically materials are tested on rats. all vegetables produced and sold in the modern world will use products that have been tested on animals, both rats and fish.

    on the topic around 6 minutes where yall are saying you can be vegan and eat meat if u need to, it reminds me about how my aunt was vegan for a couple years and she actually found herself Gaining a lot of weight because of the less protein she had (i can't explain it any better since i don't fully understand) but yeah it's like. Vegans who act like it's the healthiest way to live or that it will make you look better and lose weight and yadda yadda aren't taking into account how wild the human body is and how it reacts to different deficiencies. I don't know if she's "gold star" vegan anymore but I do know she puts protein powder in so much stuff now just to get her necessary intake

    • @bartsimpson8010
      @bartsimpson8010 Před 3 lety

      Your body cannot physically gain weight if you’re not taking in more calories than you burn, it’s not possible. She wasn’t gaining weight because she was eating less protein (protein in meat sources are full of fat and fatty acids which is more likely to make you gain weight), she must’ve been eating more calories than she was burning. It’s a myth that certain food compositions will inherently make you gain weight, just like carbs don’t inherently make you fat.

    I said over 7 years ago that I’d be as vegan as possible for as long as possible. I’ve been in situations where I have had no other food other than something with eggs or something, I literally had no prospect for food for days and I ate the food, it would have gone bad... and I was starving, I’m wearing my second hand leather boots I’ve had for like 5 years... they were $5 and the longest lasting I’ve had. I just do my best, I’m usually great at it, but I’m not going to suffer on behalf of my ethics.

    Being vegan means seeing non-human animals not as someone who can give us something (such as eggs, milk, honey or their own life) but as individuals who as such have the right to live free and without being exploited. This is the reason why even if the hens live in the open air and in a welcoming environment it is still not right to eat their eggs precisely because they are them and therefore the best thing to do would be to give their eggs to eat so that the nutrients they used to produce them are somehow reabsorbed (such as calcium) and the same thing applies to bees that produce honey as a reserve for themselves and therefore it is not justifiable to eat it.

    If you are going to avoid almonds for the environment please avoid soy too and try to eat more food from your area of the world and in season not so difficult just try something at first and then expand your knowledge. I would say animal substitute products like for example most “vegan” leathers is shitty for the environment so you have to be aware of what you want to accomplish in veganism and any action in my opinion is okey but I hope you educate your self so you do the right things for what you want to do.
