I "relic'd" my guitar a couple of months ago at band practice when the strap slipped off and the whole thing crashed down to the concrete floor. Wasn't looking to relic my guitar, but there it is.
I’ve thought about this and I think it would look more uniform if you found someone with an old freezer and put the guitar inside for a hour or so on a warm day
Except I don’t want it uniform …. AND you didn’t see enough of the guitar to even form that educated of an opinion… but you do you.

Personally, I wouldn't intentionally put the neck with a truss rod in a freezer; you're asking to twist it, or lift some frets.You can do it with just the preferably stripped body though,- you don't want condensation in electronics either.
Really cool guitar. Just gotta say that you pretty much have the only guitar channel that I don’t get sick of. Most CZcams creators run out of stuff to teach/discuss/share, and they just spew out a bunch of forgettable time-sucks. Your tips and knowledge regarding hardware,pickups, setups, and your down-to-earth attitude about all of it is refreshing to say the least. If I ever get a guitar with P90s in it, I’m buying a set of yours!

Wow! What a result in such short period of time. I admit it is not my thing, but I prefer this aging of the paint than taking a belt sander to your favorite instrument. The only thing that could make this even more authentic is fading and discolouring certain spots, especially with bright colors like that that have been in the sun a while.
Oh, and yes, the tone is much better now you let the mojo flow out. But I reckon it's cuz you got some of that spray on your pickups 😉

I’m with you. I’m 47, just got a 61 reissue GS, I’ll be dead before it looks the way I want it to. I did the back to check it out, looks killer. Im about to do the front, was a little worried about spraying around pickups and knobs. Did it cause you and issues, not removing the hardware? Did you do the neck and headstock too? Love the video, thanks!
That pickup sounds phenomenal.

I don’t personally own any guitars that aren’t naturally relic’d but totally get it just something about a worn In feel. Never mind all that the guitar sounds fantastic that p90 tone is killer!🤘
Turned out great. I don't have any nitro finish guitars, but will look into ways to lightly relicing black finish.
You can easily replicate checking with a boxcutter. Maybe use a little super fine wet dry sandpaper to smooth it out after.
@@donbishop6994 Sadly that won't work for my finish, cutting into it will result in chunks coming off. Think of it like M&M's.
The only thing cooler than how it looks, is how awesome it is that you made it your own.
What are you using in the cab to spray after you heat it? Is it once of them air cans you use for computers and stuff? I never seen them spray out anything like that before.

Relicing is part of life, whether a guitar or a person, we all wear out like it or not. I have two types of guitars. Studio recording only, in near mint condition. Relics for gigging and jam nights. To be totally fair, the relic's more so match the feel of the vintage I have owned, and I feel more at home with them. But brand-new guitars are like old shoes, they are just it.
I just saw a guy fail to get cracking with the same method. His nitro finish was only a month old though. How long had your finish been on?
Gonna go against the grain here and say ill never understand why people are so against this.
Thats like telling people theyre a poser for buying antique furniture, rifles, cars, etc. Just buy it new and wait 70 years so it becomes antique on its own, right?
I had my favorite guitar refinished and lightly aged. Doesnt mean im trying to convince anyone that my 2020 Epiphone is an antique. Now would i do this to any of my expensive guitars? Probably not. But if someone wants to make their favorite axe even cooler to them, just back off.

I do love a bare maple neck though with some F-One oil on it. In my mind that's a mod and not a relic.

BUT I have a Road Worn on the way. I wonder if that would be the one to try it on…….
I actually like when guitars and cars finishes check... the relic that I don't like are when they try to strip sections of the finish off and expose bare wood.

I forget the brand, but I saw a factory tour where they use chest freezers to cool the nitro guitars overnight. Really no different than our heroes leaving it in a cold car before a session, but don't tell the internet.
I relic my guitars just to make the dad blooz boomers seethe.
Nice work! Personally, I don't get the whole relic thing, but I don't get Tim Henson and Polyphia either. Some people like the way a relic'd guitar feels or looks, which I can understand. I just plan on letting my guitars age gracefully, lol!

I have guitars 20+ years old not naturally reliced as badly as I seen some guitars from naturally being played daily. I suggest letting your own wear and tear show your devotion to playing and not faking it. An old beat up guitar is not going to make you better. Playing the shit out of your guitar will, and with that mileage will come the wear on the guitar.

You're mostly right. A regular modern day guitar won't age at all. It's like plastic. Now nitro will age faster and the dings will look better but it will take years of using it in a stage to wear significantly. So for someone that is 50 years old you might have 20 years to age the thing and then you are dead. I understand why people do it. What I don't understand is why other people care. 🙃

I built a replica Rickenbacker V350 and it looks aged by hangar rash.
I am preemptively cringing.
It's like that space between knowing that you hurt yourself, and when the actual pain begins.
Then again, it might be cool. We'll just have to wait and see.

As an old guy at 74 who’s owned numerous guitars through the years, I just never could get into this relic’d idea. I do understand that it takes a long time to naturally age a guitar, which I did on numerous electrics and acoustics because I had them for so long.
I remember back in the mid 60s I had a beautiful Gibson hummingbird that I had to send back to Kalamazoo for repair. They shipped it back to me and it must’ve been really cold outside because it had very fine checking all over the guitar. The exact look many are looking for now but at the time I was bummed out and sold the guitar because I hated it. Live and learn…
The guy who came up with this cracking stuff at Gibson used a razor and cut the lines.

It's always a good idea to do this when the guitar is disassembled. Because different materials will shrink and expand at different rates, and you can do some real damage where you don't want to.
This method also works with a poly finish.
For a poly finish, lightly sand the gloss off, then buff it out by hand. This thins the finish to allow for better checking and the added imperfection of a hand buffing will give the guitar a more authentic appearance. After that's done, get it dirty. Go work on the car and get that grime all over the checking. Then clean it off as best you can.
Except that the whole guitar is the same mahogany, the glue isn’t some tone fairy hippie glue…. So none of that really matters.
@@DylanTalksTone aha! A misunderstanding. I was referring to the plastic and metal parts, screws etc... You can damage the screw holes and the plastic parts, if you're not super careful. That's why I eliminate that chance by taking the guitar apart before I begin any finish work. Think of it as properly prepping a car before you paint it, to avoid overspray. Yeah, you can tape it off, but it's always best to disassemble it as much as you can. Unlike overspray, you can't wipe off damaged parts or wood. Although doing anything to protect the fretboard is good. And if you don't go too crazy, you can also finish crack the neck and headstock... carefully...using the same method. I like using a foam tape when taping off sensitive parts. But if you do, definitely remove all metal parts from the headstock first.
You can get some pretty cool results.
Basic thermodynamics make this all moot. It’s not that drastic a change in temp 50-60 degrees
@@DylanTalksTone It's more than that, I'm afraid. Spray your skin for the same amount of time and see what happens (please don't).
It won't always cause damage, but it can. And it's not the temperature that's so much the issue, but the speed at which the expansion and contraction occurs is where most problems will pop up. It's just a physical truism with any material. Sometimes this is done on purpose to achieve a mechanical goal. Fun stuff.
Kudos to Don for making a great guitar. Personally, I still hate this poser relicing trend. To each his own but I feel, poser relicing takes away from the players who actually put the work in.
Does buying a used guitar make someone a poser? Almost every guitar I own came with at least one ding or scratch.
Leave the insults, let people enjoy their guitars.
Their "stolen valor" isn't going to make your playing sound worse, and that's all that matters to anyone who matters.
@@TOBORtheMighty Buying a used guitar is very different from purposely wrecking a guitar so it looks older. Also, no one is talking about how toxic and bad for the environment nitro is. There is a reason it was discontinued in the first place.

A poly finish will never naturally wear the same as a nitro finish, and people say wear must be "earned". That kind of nonsense keeps the nitro flowing.

Old school checking often came from leaving your guitar in a cold car overnight and then bringing it into the warm house the next day.
Checking doesn’t have to take years.

Why ruin a perfectly nice guitar. Never understood why people do that. Oh wait, yeah. To make it look as though they've been playing many years. So posers? I have a 72 Strat I bought brand new. Been playing it over 50 years. Body has a few dings, couple scratches, a touch of wear. Had to replace the neck a couple times due to "Real" fingerboard wear not to mention refrets.
