I know guns are a legal right, so to those that partake, enjoy it. But you are a guitar tone podcast, so why not put things behind you that support your brand? Cool vintage pickups? That old winding machine? Guitars? Amps? What if Josh Scott had a rack of guns behind him? Would be off-brand. Anyway, I still enjoy your content. Happy Father's Day!

Hi Dylan, Watching from Australia. I missed the live part of the live feed (just) but I watched the show anyway. I appreciate you had technical difficulties, but I have to say I was disappointed in the show overall. I watched it because of the title expecting some talk about the measurements of pickups and why they make a difference, how changing them affects other measurements and how does that affect tone over all. In reality you only mentioned anything about tone twice and apart from setting your switch up at 15 and 47 to get the best results it was very superficial. I do get that it was a live chat opportunity and you were expecting questions from the audience that just didn't come but I think that was more because you concentrated on your technical issues and didn't really set the tone of the broadcast. Can I suggest next time that you have a brief intro about the topic including a few key points like resistance, impedance and reactance; what they are and what they do to tone. Then have a few leading questions to help get the conversation started like - "I can change the resistance by just putting more turns on the pickup but it will affect..... with my tone." You need to have some seed material you can slip in to stimulate the audience responses. I found you spent a lot of time just waiting for a comment from the chat and not even really talking about anything, let alone the advertised topic of pickup measurements. I like the show. Please don't take this as criticism. I am just trying to give you some constructive feedback for next time. Cheers Andrew

I have to disagree with you on this one. Years ago I bought a product called “Prime Vibe” and tested it on my then brand new Martin D-41 and noticed that after 100 hours of treatment the guitar sounded sweeter and more rounded. The principal on mine is much the same but this one is a tiny amplifier with two special speakers. You play music through it and the sound will go through the guitar wood but with different frequencies all the time corresponding with the music you play. This will soften the guitar over a range of frequencies. It is like the story I heard about this guy that inherited a cheap guitar from his uncle. His uncle had been an active member of the Salvation Army and had used the same guitar all these years. The guitar was bad if he tried to play some sofisticated jazz cords but was extremely good on the typical Salvation Army cords like D,G,A,E and C. I read that Eddie Van Halen used to break in new guitars by placing them right in front of the speakers during concerts. At the time I bought my device I remember Korg had a thing with a similar approach as yours have. I recorded the sound of the guitar before and after the treatment and was convinced there was a difference. I also noticed that the guitar became loader after the treatment by 5 decibel. The treatment should work on other instruments made out of wood as well.

Paul Reed Smith needs to stop saying "pickups are microphones". He knows that they're not. Whether he's trying to make a simplistic point badly, or to deliberately mislead (eg to pretend that pickups "hear" the body wood vibrating), is unclear.

I think the basic idea of "tone wood matters" is true but I think why it matters is personal preference, you hit the nail on the head I think Paul is in the camp that his preferences matter more than others, he comes across saying his preferences should be everyone's because he knows the most,,, plus he's also first and foremost a salesman so he pushes what's going to make him the most money Years ago I went to a namm show with the store where I taught guitar, when we met him first thing out of his mouth was how many we were ordering, the store wasn't ordering anything and he immediately turned and walked away , the store might have been interested if he had just had a conversation with us but he was only interested in the stores who said his guitars were the best guitars ever and had already placed their orders lol

I haven't tested Snark for accuracy but as to durability it's a piece of crap. I've had 2 of them, both of which fell apart without hard usage (home use only and I'm gentle with equipment). After the 2nd one broke (and yes it was the ball joint part both times!), I wrote the company and no one wrote back. Wrote again: same. I'm done with them. I am very happy with TC Electronics which I don't see listed here. The TC has an accelerometer so it knows which way is up and it's very accurate. It also can test the frequency of all the strings simultaneously which I have sometimes found isn't perfect. But I've never had a TC tuner break on me andI like the display.

Hi Dylan. I enjoy your videos, so thank you for making them. I thought i would chip in with my experience here, specifically shielding of the electronics compartment. Not to disproof you at all, because i think that you are correct in what you are saying, just to share my personal experience. I have this Tokai strat that i really love playing, but i found myself using other guitars more because the buzz/hum from the guitar annoyed me. I have a godin session, which i had installed Mojotone quiet coil pickups in, and the thing was dead quiet. So i thought i would put the quiet coils in my Tokai and all would be good. So i swapped the pickups and to my surprise the Tokai was still quite noisy when i did not touch the strings. The only thing that was different on the two guitars was the shielding. The Tokai was shielded in the pickup routing and on the pickguard. Because i ran out of cobber tape, the electronics compartment did not get shielded. The Godin Session was shielded all over also in the electronics compartment. I thought to myself i had to try shielding the electronics compartment of the Tokai to see if this would change anything, and sure enough it made the Tokai i dead quiet aswell. I do agree with you that shielding the electronics compartment can lead to some issues, but if you look at the components and your space in the compartment, you can tell where you might run into trouble. I just put some vinyl electrical tape in the two areas i saw as potential issues. This is just my experience, shielding the electronics compartment did make a pretty big difference in my Tokai.

Interesting post 🤔 I am a huge fan off Gretsch guitars but !!! Im not overly fond of tremelo systems so all my Gretsch guitars have their bigsbys taken off, stored away and i just have the Gretsch cut tailpieces on them a, they look fantastic IMO and b, when you pop a string on stage the guutar still stayes in tune unlike a trem that goes out off tune, fyi i never change the pick ups either as Gretsch pick-ups are unique and have their own special soud, i have found that everyone off my gretschs just have their own voice so no, they keep their uniqueness and if I want something different I just play my Gibson or fender but thats not very often as Gretsch for me are in their own special place regardless of were the instrument is made

  • @msi1985

This is an interesting video I know I'm a year late to the party. I was thinking of conducting my own experiment using four of my own guitars, all of which have different voicings. I haven't seen any comparison videos shooting out the voicings of pickups from manufacturers like Fishman, EMG, fender, etc. I'm running into a scenario personally with my schecter Keith Merrow 7 string mkIII. I like the guitar for higher gain tones, but I really find that it doesn't sound great in most clean or edge of breakup tones. I really have to work with the EQ and the volume level of the guitar itself to get anything acceptable.... In comparison I could plug in any other guitar I have on my rack and be far happier with those sounds. I'm wondering if there would be any benefit in changing the Fishman fluence open core classic, and installing something passive instead.

I think I’d use something less abrasive than a nut file. It sounds nasty. I think I’d try a piece of 320 emery cloth. That way it will not only deburr, but polish the saddle. Leaving no scuffs, thus allowing the string to slide more easily.
