You’re too hard on yourself, Memphis. Matching paint requires a lot of specialized equipment and experience. Some things can’t be done in a home garage. Your skills are admirable.
In the immortal words of Dirty Harry, “ A good man knows his limitations.”

I know the struggle if mismatched paint. IMHO the dark primer made your color too dark in both cases. I had a similar problem while painting my mk1 octavia bumper. I used a grey primer instead of a beige one like Skoda used back in the day and my panel turned out too dark. Another thing to consider with metallic paint, is to back off the pressure on the spray gun for the last color coat. This enables the metallic particles to sit on top of the color pigments instead of drowning in the color pigments.
Don't be so hard on yourself, practice makes perfect;)

I have an R53 and I love it, it has so much character. Don’t be hard on yourself, many manufacturers have trouble matching paint from the factory.
I still see a lot of new cars where the difference between the steel panels and plastic bumpers is obvious.

thats why mercedes back in the 80s and 90s was famous for their colour matching...especially hard to do on white cars. Nowdays as you stated, you can tell even on new cars that its just not the same color :P

    Keep up the good work!

Entertaining and educational as always Memphis, l love your reaction to the E28 colour mismatch - it's so authentic and you humour is really endearing. You have winning ways as we say in UK. Surprised you binned the O.E. Xenons but as usual you had a good Plan B. Paint matching is an art form so don't fret that it eludes you for now; all pro painters can have off days too! Meantime keep at it and whatever you do don't change, you're absolutely great at what you do.

Paint mismatch this severe is fault of company that prepared the paint. They either made the paint wrong or failed to explain you correct process to apply it.
I also always tried it on the piece of sacrificial acrylic before painting the actual piece.
This "transmission cooler" I think is just "high speed"/"hot climate" (these are the options names) auxiliary water cooler.

Here in Estonia you have to have the headlight washer for xenon bulbs in order to pass inspection, so I think it's good that you ditched the xenon conversion idea. Get some nightbreaker halogen bulbs so you can kind of have the xenon look back but with halogens

Great work as always. You're quite a pro in this amateur own garage thing. I Love it. One thing that is a bit of a no go for me is installing LED's into reflector lights. The light source is huge in those and the oncoming traffic may be a little bit blinded or annoyed from the huge light source even if the lights are adjusted. It's just the way reflector lights work. Different story for projector headlamps (those are perfect).

Doing a great job, Memphis. The best headlamps, bar none, were Hella NightVision lamps, the North American DOT version, and fitted with PIIA Ultra White H3s. Those bulbs were everything you want in a bulb. Clear, bright, and even illumination. Miles better than anything I have seen, and that included BMW Xenon headlamps. Then again, I am also used to doing 2, 3, or even 4 hour drives on country highways and backroads with maybe one street light at an intersection, but pitch dark the rest of the drive. Drives like that are why I will never own a car with an idiotic screen in the middle of the dash.

painting is easy. But to master it takes many years. One trick for rock chips is to mix a little bit of base coat with the clear coat and apply with fine brush or toothpick. For better result you can apply 2-3 times to build up a little dome and then sand it down and polish. Almost invisible. Normally if we had a car for repairs we would just go over and fill in all the chips on the bonnet and doors

Do not do it! When they are sitting on the car. Take them off of course and let them lie on a flat heat resistant surface and then let them cool down properly.
If you still want to do it, do it when they are on the car... then put the oven's aluminum over the car's paintwork and be careful, as protection.
