I worked the sugar cane fields in Puerto Rico in the early 60s...for just a week. We'd get picked up in the predawn hours, trucked to the field, which had already been burned. We spent 10-12 hours cutting the stalks with hand machetes and grabbing armfuls and stacking it in huge piles. We had about 30 minutes for an on-site BYO lunch. At the end of the day you were covered in ashes, hands cut up from the cane leaves and blistered from the machete handle after about 10,000 swings. I was lucky...I moved on, but the men that worked those fields did so 5-6 days a week for a lifetime.

Sugar cane was also grown years ago in the southern part of Florida, (Belleglade, South Bay, Pahokee, etc. ,harvested by migrant workers from Jamaica. Fields were burned also before harvesting. I'm sure your research will find this info, plus after the sugar mills started to shut down, companies that needed sugar for manufacturing their product looked outside the US for suppliers. I know of one personally in Albany, Georgua, Bob's Candies shut it doors and relocated to Jamaica but eventually went totally out of business because the heirs died out or were too elderly to go on with operations.

Actually the Caribbean, Central and South America most of their main agricultural export industries such as rice and sugar, were set to fail by more powerful countries that force The small nations government to accept the larger countries subsidize exports if they wanted protection and global aid. Basically racketeering on a global level. Of course when those markets were flooded by imports from larger companies with deeper pockets l, the local farmers could not make any money or compete, and those smaller nations were forced to become entirely dependent on the larger nations Export rácket. This was set in motion decades ago by many administrations long gone from this earth.
