  • Up today we're retrofitting a heated steering wheel into my 2006 V10 TDI Touareg. I believe they were more common on earlier Touaregs so a quick visit to the scrap yard to find a cheap wheel, clock spring and controller that was needed. This supposedly will work in T2 Touaregs as well.

Great video! About to put in a wooden steering wheel from Phaeton, so the tips here are really useful!

I have an 04 and 06, both V8's. Both heated seats. 04 is loaded with everything but a heated wheel and tow package. Both have single seam.
I'll have to pull my airbags and take a look. Been debating what I'm gonna do anyway. 04 has air suspension but dressed chain rattle. 06 has much better interior. I was going to do an engine swap, may end up doing an interior swap. However while I love the air ride and its given my no issues at 150k miles it is costly to fix and the regular car handles just fine. Alternately I could just fix the motor in the 04 and just have two nice tregs lol. But I want heated wheels!
Actual if I keep both I'd lower the 06 and sport it up a bit and I'd use the one with air ride for winter and camping.

Yeah there was a few comments of people having single seam wheels but no wires for the heater. I’m not sure what to say but it’s worth checking out. I love the air ride especially for towing, I haven’t had any issues yet besides the height sensor arms breaking.

Almost forgot the Touareg (and Phaeton) had this option! Good, solid tips on how to do this.
Sounds like you need to hit up Princess Auto for some small bits for the T8 bolts you found that hold trying to remove the column stalks off the clockspring assembly.

Its awesome, interesting option for almost 20 year old cars. I dont usually get into stuff that small but its definitely handy to have when you need it.

@@JoshsJettas there's a few internal parts on the previous generations that used T8 Torx...
Mk4 and B5 Passats, the side mirrors, and the door lock modules had a few.
I bet if I looked closer at spare clocksprings or the column stalks I'd find more.
IMO, better a small Torx instead of an easy to strip Philips head on a screw that's sat hidden and possibly corroding in place for 20 years.

Been meaning to do this for so long lol, I keep putting it off. Would’ve figured all the V10’s came with them but nope!

Interesting my 2005 v8 has a single split steering wheel..and button but does not function. I wonder if it just needs turned on with vcds, going to have to give it a try.

Worth a shot, unless the wheels been swapped at one time which would be kind of weird

@JoshsJettas well I tried to code it and it just tells me out of range no matter how I try it

@@gangsterboat69 my guess is it must have the heated wheel but not the correct controller and/or possibly clock spring

does the engine need to be turned on for the heating wheel to work? i wanna buy it from a non runner and i don't know how to test if it works

    • @JoshsJettas
      @JoshsJettas  Před 8 měsíci

Key on engine off it should come on. The cluster will have a light and you should notice it being warm after a few moments.

wish i could add a picture on youtube. apparently not every wheel with a single stitching at 6 o'clock is heated
as i removed the airbag from the car, no wires are coming from the steering wheel so unfortunatelly it's not heated

@mihaianca34 that’s interesting, there was another comment on here that he already had single stitch but didn’t work on his either
