The only reason a domestic title might be more important to a team than European success is if they have already have a great amount of success in Europe. And in England, this only really applies to Liverpool. It is like wanting to 100% a video game. The final boss is the Champions League (possibly the Club World Cup if it were bigger and people took it more seriously). Every other team in England should prefer the Champions League for the reasons Jamie said - it is one trophy for the whole of Europe, not one of several that each country has its own of.

I think the two are so close that it really depends on the club's circumstance. As a Liverpool fan I'd still bite your hand off for league over CL, and we've "only" won 2 CL over 1 league in my time supporting.
The league is something different in terms of it really confirms a team as the strongest in the country because of the nature of its format, whereas the CL doesn't necessarily. However, the CL has the global aspect and its the harder (rarer) trophy to win.
Ultimately I think winning both within a span of time is more than the sum of parts of both taken individually, like for example the Barca team of 09-11 will be remembered more highly than the 5x CL Real.
The real goal is to have a mix/balance of both, and if you have one then you desire the other. That's how I think it works. If you have 2 eggs for breakfast then you'd rather add bacon than another egg, but if you have 2 bacon rashers you want the egg.

For what it’s worth, I think the reason that happened is because Forest knocked out Liverpool in the first round of their first European Cup win, giving Liverpool free reign to just focus on domestic football while Forest finished 2nd in the league. Similar to City in 2019, and possibly this season too.
Had Liverpool knocked out Forest, the respective trophies likely would’ve been won the other way around. It’s an interesting anomaly that isn’t talked about enough lol.

I guess it is a matter of preference. Personally I am getting fed up with this obsession for that CL So much so that it takes precedence over every other trophy going. The CL is also becoming the same old same old. Same Clubs get through the Group Stages. The same old same old Clubs get through that. Then it becomes the usual lottery, but the same old same old Clubs get through. "Occasionally", like this Season and once in a blue moon, a Club gets through that you wouldn't expect to, like Villarreal this Season, but eventually they also meet their match and that is the end of that. Even the same old same old Clubs are winning the thing. I think the most exciting Competitions going is The EFL Championship, Div 1 and Div 2 in the Sky Bet Leagues. If you look at this Season, all three Leagues were VERY exciting up to the last day of the Season. If you think about it, every other League is the same old same old. The same Clubs win it, or finish in the top 3-4, The Clubs who come up, go straight back down, the same old same old Clubs go into that CL, etc. Micah Richards and Jamie Carragher can "try" and make it sound as exciting as they like, the truth is, it is all getting very boring and predictable, whether you prefer the League, or CL.

    • @jmichaelbyrne
      @jmichaelbyrne Před 2 lety

Well obviously, because in the Championship three of the best teams are removed from the equation each season as they’ve been promoted, so of course there’s more variety. If you remove the three best teams from any league there’s a lot more for the others to play for every other year, especially when the goal isn’t necessarily the title but to just be promoted.. so three teams essentially win the ultimate prize available. You’re also making a point about the boring predictability.. yet your avatar is the club badge who have won the last 10 consecutive titles in their respective league.. kind of an odd contrast to everything you’ve just said.

    • @neovarleydownes9109
      @neovarleydownes9109 Před 2 lety

@@jmichaelbyrne And yet, despite that, it is still more exciting than most Leagues, so not really seeing what point it is you are trying (but failing miserably) to make. I was including Bayern in that "boring predictability", that was my point and again, not one you have really made. I was actually giving the example of ALL major Leagues. They are ALL predictable (up to a point) La Liga, Serie A, Ligue1, Eredivisie, PL and yes, The Bundesliga. The Premiere Ligue has had the same top 3, just in different order, ever since its 88 years existence. I am just saying it would be nice to change things up and personally I am disappointed that the European Super League never materialised. It would have been so much better than any CL could provide and what Competition it would have given. It would also have given the Clubs that are not considered top Clubs a chance to win a Cup, or their respective Leagues and get into European Competitions, the CL and Europa League, to give us something new to watch and get excited over. Even who is going to go down and where they will all finish (with the odd surprise), is predictable. Sometimes I look at a League Table, from any given League and have to look at the date to make sure it is the up to date one, because to me, it doesn't look any different than from the Season before, or the Season before that, in most cases...other than the Relegation spots, but give them time to come back up and it will look the same old same old :0) Are you not bored with Bayern, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Juventus, Inter, PSG, Barcelona, Real, Atletico, Porto, Benfica, Sporting, Ajax, PSV, winning their Leagues, or finishing in that top 2-3 every damn Season, with the odd one chiming in once in a blue moon...in a VERY looooong blue moon. I know I am. That was my point :0) And the fact that the Championship downward, changes because of who goes down and comes in, was my exact point as to why they are more exciting every Season. it changes the whole dynamic of that League and brings an element of surprise, which is more than can be said for those top Leagues, that's for sure.

I think there will forever be arguments for and against which is better to win- the Champions League or the Premier League. However, what is consistent is that there are established very good teams in Europe, especially in the top leagues, and only small margins most times are required for any of these very good teams to win the Champions League and their respectively leagues. The number of matches(13) makes for an easier run to the final compare to (36) or (38) matches in the league but the competition is stiffer even in that shorter run. Where the conversation of the great teams should move is to the tactical display of a team which translates in to result against all odds. Remember Porto 2004CL, Liverpool 2005CL, Chelsea 2012CL Leicester 2016PL? Winning the League consistently is great, winning the Champions league cements a team's position on the pedestal of the greats!

Also, the CL isn't a random one-off game per season. You're playing the best teams in Europe in the group stages, quarter final, semi final, and then final. The difference is clear: it is easier to buy the Premier League than buying the Champions League. If we take into consideration how many games top clubs in England have to play. The bigger and better squad depth usually wins you the league, because you can rest key players while still being able to win comfortably. City always had the biggest squad. For winning the Champion League you need the best 11 on matchday with the best mentality. Something you cannot buy.

in 2003 when Jose coach Roman's Chelsea or 2008 when City buy Robinho, people didnt think of them as threat. It become apparent that these 'traditional club fans ' dont like succesfull upstart. Another proof that it is about
achivement instead of money is the constant dissing on Spurs even though they are above Arsenal the paat 5 years. Because Spurs make it big. Villa and West ham spend more than Atletico but no one give a damn about their money since they dont threaten the red clubs position

Well said. Statistics alone should say it all.
Man Utd. - 13 Premier League Titles, 2 Champions League Titles (in that time period)
Chelsea - 5 Premier League Titles, 2 Champions League Titles
Arsenal - 3 Premier League Titles, 0 Champions League Titles
Man City - 5 Premier League Titles, 0 Champions League Titles
      Spurs - 🙃
Liverpool are the only exception (1 PL, 2 CL - since start of Prem)
Champions league is harder to win, requires good league performance as a prerequisite, and it's more widely watched by the world.

A PL is a league title which is equivalent to LA Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1 etc
UCL is a world title which is equivalent to World Cup, CWC, Euros
Man United have 3 CL and 20 leagues
Liverpool 6 CL and 19 leagues
Madrid 13 CL and 35 leagues
Barca 5 CL and 26 leagues
Bayern 6 CL and 32 leagues
AC Milan 7 CL and 18 leagues
Do u see a pattern? + the best teams from the whole of Europe play in the CL with the highest quality players. Bayern, BVB, Juve, Inter, AC Milan, Real, Barca, Atletico, PSG, Napoli, Sevilla.
In a league there are only 3 elite teams, in CL there's at least 6.
The best player in the world doesn't play in PL and 0 ballon dors in the last 15 years have been won in the PL.
PL isn't that big, at the end of the day it is a league title which has the same meaning of the championship

    Let me make it clear
The title your team wins is the bigger
And I think FA CUP is gonna be the biggest this year

As a Liverpool fan I am trying to be level headed , man city are a fantastic team there is no denying that but looking at reality they need that one trophy thats missing to go as one of the all time greatest teams and I will welcome them into that cub if they win it as my loyalty also lies with English football
