- I break down the most interesting features of Intel Arc dedicated graphics on laptops, and tackle some questions about Linux compatibility. PLUS: How Intel is launching MUCH differently than AMD or Nvidia, while still catering to gamers AND content creators.

Got a burning question for Intel? Drop it here!
How is the energy efficiency compared to other GPUs? Like watts per fps or something similar.
eGPU over thunderbolt support?
Yes, will it linux? This is still unanswered as far as I'm concerned, educated guesses aren't facts.
Will the Arc Control software be available on Linux? Did they mention support for Linux or is it just wishful thinking?
@@pranze3484 There is basic support for the Arc series GPUs in the kernel, and even some advanced support for things like resizable BAR.
It would be great to see a system76 with Intel Arc or Battlemage graphics as the first launch device. You get top tier FOSS drivers, a competitive graphics offering and best of all the bragging rights to say we are purely an open source company. I'm surprised that these Linux laptop manufactures have stuck with Nvidia, literally the worst offender for Linux drivers, hopefully Intel can change this.
I hope the Intel GPU's will have functional open-source drivers for OpenCL/compute. That are functional with professional software like Blender and Davinci Resolve. AVI1 encoding is very good news, patended codecs need to get replaced.
I'd *really* like to see pressure applied to Intel to get Arc Control over to Linux, but at present it doesn't seem likely.
Question was asked by a user in the Intel Insiders Discord, "Is Arc Control available in Linux?", to which the answer (from Bryce Furuya, Intel Arc Community Advocate) was "There are currently no plans to release Arc Control on non-Windows operating systems."
I mean, never say never right? this is an evolving market opportunity for Intel, so things could change at some point.
Windows is probably paying them to use exclusive features on their platform.
If their is a Control Center for Linux i stop using Windows today instandly!
I am grateful to your channel context. I am hoping you will do a follow up update to this video perhaps using the Arc A-770 using the latest intel drivers on Linux there have been positive improvements both in the gaming and content creator venues. I purchased Acer Predator OC A-770 16GB DDR6 recently. The performance on DaVinci Resolve has been exceptional, specifically when coupled with a 13th Intel gen cpu. Again thanks for your hard work. Continued success to you and to your channel.
We need more Arc and Radeon options in Linux Laptops as the drivers work better
This was excellently explained, Sir! AV1 could potentially save a lot of power as well as a lot of space for creators who keep back-ups of all their previous work and I am excited as hell to see what Intel does next. I'm also glad Intel seem to be invested in Linux on open source, especially when their employees have contributed so much code to the kernel.
the only things that i hoping theyll come with are :
1) solid performance that rival current gpu (1080p is enough. no need to be the best)
2)lower tdp/watt usage
3)reasonable price
if these ARC gpus have it, ill buy it. no question. then ill pair it with the upcoming ryzen 5 7600x bcoz it the only new cpu with ddr5 that consume less power (65W)
I said it on Twitter, I say it here: GREAT WORK!
My only question goeas to BlackMagic Design on Linux support ofr DaVinci Resolve: Will it include Intel ARC? or are the end usser (us) stuck on Nvidia and it's outdated propietary drivers?
I would love to replace my i7-4720HQ/GF950M laptop with one of these Arc offerings.
Optimus is hell, even with Manjaro's helping utilities.
Nvidia is garbage on Linux stop shipping it System76 its time to go Intel or AMD like this steamdeck. Support the open source community more.
Serious question: Having come from Mac, why do people _want_ those driver software suite things? That's hand down one of my *least* favorite parts of dealing with GPU drivers on my Windows work machine. I legitimately like not having to deal with that on Mac/Linux where things generally "just work" and you don't have to deal with 3rd party crap. It's described here as "less bloated", but that's still makes it a pretty hard sell. Honestly I've never given the AMD catalyst software (or whatever it's called?) a fair shake beyond a skim and then disabling everything. (and of course cursing when I find it's still capturing control-keys meant for the program I actually meant to use) It all seems like bloatware to work around other badly made games, and speaking personally I don't have the patience for that on a game-by-game basis.
I agree completely. - Nobody wants to have those ugly software suites installed.
On the other hand, for certain tasks you need to have it installed, e.g. for overclocking your GPU or for merging multiple displays into one virtual one.
Ideally settings like that would be standardized and exposed in the OS settings.
But bloatware-creating manufacturers will stay bloatware-creating manufacturers until they are absolutely forced to change.
would have loved to see the 2 XeSS comparison shots at 4k
Intel might have that on their channel but I'm not sure.
Where do I find (or should I say which distros have) MESA 22.0? This is the first I've heard of it.
This month a new version of Ubuntu (22.04) will have it. So does the Fedora 36 beta and several Arch distros.
any updates on this?
Any updates after this video?
Would've liked to see a comparison between HEVC and AV1.
There's obviously a lot they didn't show us, but when I have hardware in hand I'll fix that.
Even tho even the highest end arc wont compete with 3080 nd all probably the other features are very exicting never been so much exicted for an intel product
So hype 🤪
I wonder too how will these fare on Linux machines. If they offer a good bang for the buck i would build a working station blue-team powered 🙂
dont for get that intel has it own Linux distro, called "Clear Linux".
True, but I'm not sure how focused it is on the desktop / gaming / prosumer side of things. Been awhile since I looked at it, though!
@@LinuxForEveryone they will get there. once they see the success of steam on Linux.
after all, they do offer desktop version of their clear linux.
Nvidia driver now open, i hope next video tested on linux
I am really curious how these new graphics will stack up against Apple Silicon and its GPUs.
Your avatar obviously rocks.
i kinda wish you put the "will it linux" part first because i almost didn't watch this because i thought that "yeah it probably won't work with linux"🙂
amd and niveda ur got competion this is great for many. thanks for video
You're very welcome ☺️
Would be good to get "official" answers about Linux support, not just "should and would" based statements!
I hear you and you're right. I had a very short window to write this article and produce this video, and I was hoping to get ALL the answers from Intel before my deadline. Sadly it didn't happen. I only got answers about OBS and feature parity.
@@LinuxForEveryone Btw - I realize the tone of my reply may seems demanding - I truly appreciate your work and understand deadline/pressure, in fact was more of a 'hit' at Intel - they should better communicate about Linux support, especially since the Steam Deck even more and more people are using it as daily driver...
@@eemanemm Hey no worries. But rest assured I'm chasing down answers, and I also plan to cover this launch longterm (I'll have hardware on hand), so hopefully there will be more clarity soon.
arc 3 pcie 1x gpu pls
Let me save you time. No it will not support gaming on Linux features.
I will stay with my RX6700XT then.
Comparing AV1 with h.264 is disingenuous. A better comparison would be AV1 vs. h.265 (HEVC).
She can do both?!
Notebooks do not interest me. I want to know about discreet desktop. This video was a waste of my time.
I DID say within the first couple minutes that this was a laptop launch.
