    Have heard this but wanting to add the anniversary Passion Play CD set with this so it can be in the personal library. Waiting on that price to come down to earth. But enjoyed your enthusiastic review of the LPs. Maybe that will come in a CD at some point as well. In any event, thanks for the review of this item, Pete. Great stuff for existing and future fans of Jethro Tull.

    Elton John, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Magma and many others recorded here: in the early 1970s, Château d'Hérouville was the epicentre of pop and rock music in France. ;)

    Funny how time changes opinions. I purposely skipped over "APP" and "MITG" when each was released. I didn't like this "change in direction " of JT music, though i enjoy their earlier releases. Nowadays, I absolutely love these two albums.

    Great review!!! I have always loved the Chateau D'saster tapes more than A Passion Play. I felt like Chateau had more personality than A Passion Play.
    Usually around the house I will play Nightcap...Chateau...A Passion Play ( 40th) and War child. Sometimes I wish they were all connected as a triple album or 3 cd set. It's really enjoyable to hear all three

    There's also very little flute on A Passion Play. It's almost entirely soprano saxophone that's featured apart from the closing moments on the album where the flute appears.

  • @ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout

    Hi Pete ! Nice unboxing / overview. I have the Steven Wilson ‘Extended Performance’ set, and I still want to buy this because it’s the first time this material has been released as a canonical album.
    Also I thought I should mention, there is one small difference between this release and the CD / DVD boxed set that I’m sure is getting past a lot of folks because it’s an unpopular song. “The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles” is a new 2024 mix which replaces Dee Palmer’s orchestrations with Anderson on acoustic guitar from the 72 sessions. As a diehard Tull collector of ‘everything’ this is really interesting to me and I’m likely buying this on the strength of that outtake. Anyway, have a nice day - keep up the good work. 😊

    I'm totally with you, I love the Nightcap mixes, and it would've been absolutely epic if this had the overdubbed flute on it (also, Wilson's mixes are not always as good as he's advertised, e.g. Hawkwind's Warrior album). Still, anything that has Jeffrey Hammond on it is automately epic :D

    Have to agree with you, I like the Chateau material better than Passion Play. And I also agree with you that both the version from the 20 Years boxset and the Passion Play boxset have their own things to love about them. I remember getting the 20 Years boxset as a birthday present when I was in High School and just loving and especially loving the Chateau material. It was definitely like getting a whole new JT album.

    Pete, idea for a future show (if it hasn't already been done) -- albums that you inexplicably don't own by bands you love. You mentioning War Child made me think of this, I was a huge fan after TAAB and Passion Play but never bought War Child and I can't say why. Another would be Exit Stage Left from Rush.

    Get a record player Pete - you're missing out there are plenty of great LP's not issued in any other way including jazz records and some modern issues. It's always get to hear, and peruse, music in this format because I think it, ultimately, is the best all-round way of presenting music in an art form eg. Fabulous covers, readable, human-scale liner notes, the 20/20 minute track format and the sound, which - all told - despite what you say, is the best way to hear an LP. On the down side is the extra cost which may not always be feasible as a purchase, however, sometimes second-hand LP's maybe cheaper than hard to find, overpriced CD's. Recent purchases of mine on vinyl have been the Kansas epic 3 and 4 disc sets of live music, a long lost Isaac Guillory live album and a couple of the massively underrated Alain Markusfeld albums. You won't regret it!

    • @seaoftranquilityprog
      @seaoftranquilityprog  Před 5 měsíci

      Not gonna happen. For one, I don't think the 'quality' is all that much different, unless you plan on investing thousands of dollars on a great stereo, then there's the space to not only set up this system but house all of the albums. Not really interested.

  • @riverisle1
    @riverisle1 Před 5 měsíci +1

    This is a good album, it would have made a nice addition to the Tull cannon, but I don't think it is as good as A Passion Play. Everytime I listen to this album, I can't help but feel it lacks direction and one gets the sense that it musically and lyrically goes around in circles (although both the music and the lyrics are quite good). A Passion Play is much more focused, which appeals more to my taste. I listened to this again right after watching this segment, and still feel the same way, that an hour of music-- which is very good, don't get me wrong-- feels at least a half hour longer than it should, even with Steven Wilson in the driver's seat. I wonder if Ian ultimately felt the same way, and why he basically scrapped it for a Passion Play and scattered parts of it to the four winds, so to speak.
