  • The sawmill is back in action after we make a few repairs. We get started on cutting siding for our shop end walls and button up the sawmill shed with additional bracing and log oil. Just because we are working hard doesn't mean we don't have time to cook up tasty meals, blueberry brioche for brunch and caribou fried steak for dinner.
    We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

    If you go to the Forestry Forum, there is a whole section on what people use to keep the pitch down on the blade of the sawmill. Most do a combination of water, Dawn, and diesel fuel. Good luck!

      I was going to say, here in the south they use diesel fuel to cut through the sap. I say that but they are mostly cutting Pine logs in the south.

      The only things I thought of that could have been factors were is the saw still perfectly level? Because that would affect the angle at which the blade hits the wood. You put it on those big beams you cut and the wood could have been from different trees with different moisture content and the amount of solar access or angle of wind hitting them could cause differential drying which could put it out if level. Freezing the water in the wood would make them swell, which could also affect the level.
      The other one was the speed of the blade.
      I have a cheap pole chain saw from Harbor Freight and there's a little sponge in the oil reservoir that *theoretically* keeps the oil from leaking out. It can move out of place easily and then the oil drains out all over everything. Yeah, sucky mess. My neighbor has one of those cut little Ryobi ones made for pruning branches and while I am completely in love with how light it is, it doesn't have a built in oil delivery system. You have a squirt bottle you're supposed to use as needed. Whatever that means. That experience made me quit hating on the HF saw though, lol.

    To help with Sap build up on the Blade use water and some dawn dish washing liquid. Or you can also use Diesel fuel in a spray bottle and periodically spray the blade with diesel fuel.
    The Many different kinds of Pine & Spruce are full of rosin sap and it will build up quickly on the saw mill blade and also on your chainsaw bar, So some diesel fuel sprayed periodically with a pump spray bottle will help in keeping it removed.

    • @CCRider5312
      @CCRider5312 Před měsícem +7

      Eric and Arielle to avoid as much of that sappy wood, Ask the people you buy the logs from to deliver you logs cut in the fall or winter of the year they have less sap. Logs cut in the warmer months will be much more full of Sap.

    I love Cabot's stain. It is what our decorating business sold. It is a good outdoor stain.
    I love that Eric seems to be able to fix any machine.
    Arielle, your baking "problems" are probably caused by a combination of humidity, cold temperatures, and a different elevation. I live a mile up, in a valley no less, and to cook pasta, I have to add half again as much time for it to be cooked, even al dente. I have a friend who moved barely a mile but several hundred feet down in elevation and proximity to the valley vs. mountain. She has had to redo all her cooking times. Something to keep in mind.

    The chicken fried caribou looked delicious. Everything looked great. A guy brought his sawmill and cut timber into lumber for us. I was going to ask him to help you but you figured it out. You all do great❤

    You haven't fixed the problem of the bent bracket. The new one you replaced the bent one with needs to be stiffened. Weld a tab on the back to stiffen it.
