A Taste of Honda's History | Max Verstappen drives an F1 classic, the 1965 RA272

- Ahead of this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, Max got an adrenaline-fuelled taste of Honda’s racing history and the golden age of Formula One as he got behind the wheel of the Japanese manufacturer’s first Grand Prix winner at the firm’s Tochigi Proving Ground.
Prior to heading to Suzuka, Max, along with 2017 Indy 500 winner Takuma Sato, visited Honda’s state of the art test facility north of Tokyo where, after visiting the Tochigi factory and meeting staff, our engine partners introduced the two racers to one of the most famous former Honda employees of all, the RA272 F1 car.
Built for the 1965 season, the 1.5-litre V12 car was driven by American racers Richie Ginther and Ronnie Bucknum. At the season-ending Mexican Grand Prix, Ginther powered the technologically advanced car to the Japanese squad’s first F1 victory.

Its really satisfying seeing a modern F1 car on a big banked turn.
Zandvoort will have a nice banked turn as well.
@GhostsKuriboh I heard they are making it 18 degrees. Pirelli has voiced their concerns but Zandvoort wants to do it anyways. Could get interesting.
yousnoerd don’t tell the Dutch what they can’t do even if they are wrong lol
@GhostsKuriboh Who the fuck says Pirelli makes garbage tires? They make tires up to specs given to them by FIA.
It's the Honda proving grounds / test track.
The difference in sizes between cars just makes me think of how Monaco was designed for that 60's racer, not modern F1 cars :/
lol Monaco wasn’t designed for any car, it’s the cars that are designed and setup for Monaco.
Israel S. Grancelli It was designed for 1920’s and 1930’s cars. But the track wasn’t really designed at all, they just picked a bunch of streets and formed them to make a course.
Every track was designed ...
Absolutely. Just back then cars were just designed to roads. Now these cars are just designed to have downforce, and tracks are designed to suit that. And thats why past is better than present racing in my opinion.
A Renault-powered car used to promote Honda for a team named after Aston Martin. What a time to be alive.
Engine is a new 2.4litre developed by Honda
Not to mention that the current Aston Martin cars are powered by Mercedes.
@@thedarkknight1758 Sure lets waste our r&d on a car that's not competing in f1 anymore
@@tomokokishi3066 Inception haha
@@thedarkknight1758 No, it indeed is the Renault-V8 in the back.
Seeing Honda Hybrid slapped on the side of a Renault V8 is hilarious.
@@yztefenbrianb.sanpablo666 I just lost a couple of braincells while reading your comment
@@yztefenbrianb.sanpablo666 It isn't a Honda V8 in that car. It is a Renault V8. The Honda V8 wouldnt fit in the car because the original car was designed around the use of the Renault V8. For future reference, do some research before you make yourself look stupid.
@@yztefenbrianb.sanpablo666 It is a Renault V8 in that Red Bull. But there is a Honda Hybrid sticker on it because fuck Renault pretty much
@@yztefenbrianb.sanpablo666 the 2019 car has a honda engine. The car they use here has a renault v,8(!). Are you just trolling?
@@yztefenbrianb.sanpablo666 They can. They bought the engine and are no longer contracted by Renault. They own the engines for that car. Meaning that they can name them whatever they want. Last year they called the Renault Engines Tag heuer instead of renault on the car
That car is older than his dad.
Would have loved to see Sato in the Red Bull
Second that
@@middleagedwomanwithahandba2795 cuz he's Japanese

“It sounds beautiful” next scene they play music over engine sound🤦♂️
CMD/CTRL - Riot Lights
good gracious, the RA272 sounds amazing!
Dear RedBull video editor,
We all love seeing the onboard footage in these videos. Especially when it features amazing sounding cars we may not have heard or seen before. So please can you not overlay generic music over the top of it?
Kind regards,
A fan
More of this please, thank you😊😊😊
0:04 max looks like hes hungover
Race cars are awesome :D
Thanks for uploading :)
Engine started
Drivers: sounds beatiful
Music kicks in
Me: WHY!?!?!?
Awesome video, just awesome. I had a smile on my face the whole time watching it... 😅
なんや!?この夢みたいなコラボレーションは
Looking good brother 💪🏎
Fantastic video! Honda Power!
Stay safe Japan w/ typhoon Hagibis battering parts of country.
All the best to RBR-Honda at Suzuka 2019 GP.
NO Words.....🇯🇵🇯🇵 Forever !
One of the rare times I've seen Max's full name used. I had to backtrack and pause to see what all those letters were, LOL. Probably because of Japanese formality.
Where?
Beautiful Car 😍
i love the sound
Awesome video!
Much better than the teaser video
Every other F1 team: We are really happy with our social media and how we seem to be reaching a new audience.
Red Bull: This 🙌🏻🙌🏻
It’s not even fair...🏆
Please bring that car in Monaco next year! That sound in Monaco would be a trip into memory lane
Max Verstappen is just the perfect driver for Red Bull. Seb Vettel did also fit in perfectly, but Max is just a class for himself!
@@dropkicc6304 I'd rather imagine Max and Lewis @ Redbull. (and Seb + Sainz at Mercedes, Lec + Ric at Ferrari). Never gonna happen, but that would be a racket!
@@broyout3586 that would be awesome.
@@broyout3586 People just love to have (ex-)McLaren drivers on their teams🤣
If only there was an actual Honda engine in that redbull
@GhostsKuriboh Really? Where did you hear that?
@@VigneshBalasubramaniam Out of his ass
@GhostsKuriboh Apparently you win the "full of shit" comment of the day award.
@@intelsilver it's real.
The Dark Knight link please
I'd love to the F1 grid in those exact cars (all the same with just custom liveries), fitted with modern safety equipment, go at it for a couple special sprint races each year. One at Monaco definitely.
Maybe not as a spint race if it would be for qualy, but didn't the teams get Shelby cobras as a present, maybe something like that.
Holy shot this is 2 years old
For everyone's information: The RB7 is a Renault-powered car with the only difference being that it features the RB15-livery instead of its original livery used during the 2011 season, which as a result, means that the engine-cover features the Honda-Hybrid text despite there, of course, being a Renault-V8 below that cover.
It is not. Hasn't been since the Renault engine expired and they swapped to Honda power. Seriously, if people at RB say it no longer runs a Renault, why keep saying the contrary?
@@halofreak1990 But the older cars are 'physically' still fitted with Renault engines/PUs, only the RB15 has Honda-powertrain installed in the back, none of the previous RBR-cars.
@GamerFrancis TV No, the RB7 is a Renault V8-powered car.
For those who were curious, the song near the end is called "Riot Lights" by CMD/CTRL
Thanks mate

Dat sound!
Love Honda ❤️😘😊
Adoro Takuma Sato 👍🏻
Old is gold
I demand an F1 track with extreme high speed banking like that. That shit is tops.
Looks comfy.
So coooooool!!!!
F1 Classic noise > anything right now
The cars are starting to get some good notes now. That Ferrari does sound damn good.
V6 hybrids would sound so much better if it weren't muffled by the MGU-H
@@rodriguezracer4567 Yah. Whatever happened to the FIA getting rid of MGU-H in 2021? Im pretty sure its the same engine formula because the teams complained.
@@rodriguezracer4567 And funnily enough. Mercedes wasnt the one complaining. They said bring it on. lol They just know they can outspend everyone else. :P
Functioning ears > anything you have on your head right now

they're clearly proudest of their V8 cars
The old car sounds like the F2 car in cockpit
Gp2 engine Gp2 engine ahrgh !!
Sato ! O samurai voador !
After watching this video... video with Max on oval makes more sense
what racetrack is that on japan? i know only the SUZUKA and Fuji and Motegi
As far as I can remember, Motegi was owned by Honda. In fact, the circuit have 2 tracks, one for American Sports like Nascar or Indy Car and one for the competitions like MotoGP, Super Formula etc
This is the Honda proving grounds and test track. It has the banked oval and a number of different mini-circuits. It is shown quite often in Best Motoring for Type R product launches.
LOL a Renault powered 2.4 L V8 being covered up with a Honda badge!
The Renault engine wore out a while ago but Honda made a new one just for the rb7
and i just knew max had middle name Emilian? damn lol
Would love to see Sato in his IndyCar against Verstappen on the banking
takuma sann
Is there a photoshoot of this?
What if the PU architecture was a V8 Hybrid instead of a V6? 🤔
Next time Takuma Sato + Pastor Maldonado, please 😂
DeWeberis there wouldn’t be anything left of the cars. 🤣
❤️❤️❤️
V-TEC in 1965?
Its sad Honda will not continue more than 2020
Looks like a Honda Ariel Atom
Благодарю
I miss the old livery
What is this RedBull car? And why does it have a honda livery while having a Renault v8 lol
It’s the rb7, they just put the 2019 livery on it
It is a Honda engine. The Renault engine wore out a while ago. Honda made an engine specifically for the rb7
琢磨さんだー
wow that honda 1.6 turbo sounds just like a v8.
There's nothing more cooler than watching a f1 driver do donuts. A driver worthy of competing in the fastest league in the world with a car that's meant to be precise and mechanical perfection, donuts is the last thing that car was meant to do😂
well, it is rear wheel drive. what else is it supposed to do?
I guess it was too hard to give us a little speedometer readout up in the corner?
This just proves you don't need 1000 horsepower to have fun.
Zandvoort?
Max is driving a v8 Red bull from seb right?
たくまカッコイイ
Why don't we have tracks with banked corners? As we can see, a modern f1 car is driveable in banked corners.
Which engine does the RB use? Renault or Honda?
Honda
明日楽しみな人🙋♂️🙋
Let Max drive Honda F1 of his father (Jos Verstappen ) the Honda RA099.
SATO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2:07 That girl behind is most beautiful than RA272 and RB7 together jajaja

lol isnt a renault in the back of that red bull...
Team RB 4 ever
It’s a pitty that Honda is withdrawing from F1
0:57 You’re welcome
Love that Renault
does anyone knows why red bull always use the RB7 for events like these?
It's not only RB, i can be wrong but they use V8 instead of V6T cause they are cheaper and easier to run and maintain
@@WLS_Churchill I meant, why don't they use cars like RB6, RB8, RB9 which also uses the V8

Daniel Ricciardo Says 2-Time World Champion Max Verstappen Doesn't Know How to Drive Manual Car hahaha
Well Daniel was wrong max can drive with a clutch and not just semi auto
@lange darm but that was for other reasons than having never driven in a car with manual gearbox.
Ginther was a tiny guy. Bucknum a little bigger...it seems like no modern drivers quite fit in those 1.5 liter era cars properly.
Am I the only one who would have liked a little less images and a little more talk and analysis by Max ? I would have loved Max's opinion on this piece of 60's engineering, proving us 2020's guys we did not invent anything
