- Spider-Man is awesome. He’s always been awesome. Whether you grew up with the 90s animated series FOX Kids or maybe you were even a comic book reader, it didn’t make a difference, Spider-Man has always been cool. Today, we’re going to dive deep into two video games I held very near and dear growing up: 1994’s Maximum Carnage and 1995’s Separation Anxiety. 16 bits, hundreds of enemies, and two stars of the show: Spider-Man and Venom. Grab a drink and something to snack on DanDans, because it’s time for another friendly neighborhood retrospective!

To bring retrospectives on Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater to life, we need to hit the goals on the Patreon Support Project! We're almost there, literally every signup brings us one step closer. You can make the difference.
I loved both of these games back when they we're released it was Final Fight with superheroes. Yes I beat Maximum Carnage. Yet me and my brother never beat Separation Anxiety but still a great Retrospective it means a lot too us,too have these videos of pure nostalgia Ian. Thank you for your hard work.
That jacket is sick!
I still regularly hum the credits music to this while I'm doing lame adult tasks
Maximum Carnage was the first Spider-Man video game I ever played when I was a kid. It was a tough game but I still had fun playing it as I loved the music.
I totally agree! It was my first Spider-Man game too and I loved it! I only ever beat it once but it was a glorious moment when I did. As a kid that young to beat a game quite hard like that was awesome! I have good memories of that game!
@@Lifeisgood86took me ages to get past that big rounded metal robot. When I finally finally did i somehow dominated shriek, but any few times after that when I got that far, I'd have so little life left by the time I beat the robot that shriek would beat my butt lol. Only beat it once if I remember. I'd love these two and the tick game to come back in a bundle or sumthin.
I bought Maximum Carnage when it came out but although I got pretty far I never beat it. I think my brother and me bought a Playstation the next year, so I never got to play Separation Anxiety (now I have the ROM on my computer which I’ll eventually really put some time into). I sold Maximum Carnage but bought a new copy a few years later which I still have.
@@TheRealCaptainFreedom Cool
Me to Rented it all the time besides mk 1 and 3
I remember playing this as a kid and paying special attention to when Doppleganger burst through the cathedral window because I couldn't believe they put enough detail to dim the lighting a bit when the candles go out. I thought maybe I'd blinked quick or it was just in my head or something. really nice touch by them.
Edit: I also named my turtle McDuff after the fat guy with the club because he kinda reminded me of one and was very confused when adults would always start talking to me about Shakespeare. I was like 7, what the hell did I know?
Personal story about this game, sorta: i used to be a radio dj, and this dude would only ask for the song three little pigs by green jelly; annoyed the hell out of me after awhile, and im thinking "id rather listen to the maximum carnage soundtrack" also, the game over music sounds like Alice in Chains.
"Little pigs, little pigs, LET ME IN."
"Not by the hairs on our chinny-chin-chins!"
"Then I'm HUFFIN', I'm PUFFIN', I'll blow your house in!"
Love me some Green Jelly!
I have so many positive memories of maximum carnage from my childhood! Thanks for covering it!
I remember my Dad bought this game for the Sega Genesis as we were huge fans of Spider-Man and Batman. I also taught my Mom how to play this game too, she wasn't really a gamer as she only played Ms Pac Man. Those were the days.
I LOVE Scott Cleverdon's performance as Carnage in Spider-Man TAS. I was so happy to learn that he's Scottish like me.
Maximum Carnage had some of the most satisfying punch sound fx ever in a beat em up. Surprised you didn't show that off, still a great review
Spidermans power hit (NOT in a grab) is a roundhouse kick that hits infront and behind.. Venoms (NOT in a grab) is a Ground Hit with a radius... They one you showed was the uppercut in a Grab. They have 2 power hits that differ if they grab or not.
I love both Separation Anxiety and Maximum Carnage on SNES. I love these games since I was 9 and 10 years old in 1994 and 1995
Another fun retrospective episode! I had only played Maximum Carnage and that game rules! Would love a remake.
my dad also brought this game for me on saga and from then on Carnage was always my fav spider man villain, Maximum Carnage was a classic and hopefully they’ll make a future spider man game with him in it, it’s well overdue
I remember playing Maximum Carnage as a kid and the vivid blood red case. The soundtrack was bad ass and probably sparked some of the reason why I'm into Black Sabbath.
Maximum Carnage was one of my favorites from that era. Separation Anxiety just seemed like a rushed sequel. Your analysis was dead-on
The TV ads for Maximum Carnage blew me away in the 90s-made it look like Carnage was taking over the real world, turning the sky red. It got me absolutely pumped to try the game.
Dude sooooo sick
I prefer Maximum Carnage over Venom/Spiderman Seperation Anxiety. Our local Hollywood Video used to sell videogames for $20 back in the mid 90's. My brother and me were able to find Maximum Carnage with the box and it was the red cartridge.
I first played Maximum Carnage on the SNES because a friend had it. We would play his SNES in the backroom of his dad's Mexican restaurant. My Mom owned a hair salon in the same outdoor mall, so that's how me, my brother, and that kid became friends. He had all the latest games at the time. I recently picked this up for the SNES myself.
Maximum Carnage was my favorite video game growing up. How do I know? We’d go to Albertsons to rent movies and games once a week and every week I’d rent Maximum Carnage. It got to the point where they didn’t even make me physically turn it back in. The clerk would just mark it returned and check it back out to me.
I wasn’t attuned to how much money renting was, but thankfully we ended up eventually being helped by someone who seen the rental history and told my dad he could have just bought me the game by now.
From that point on I never got to rent games, my dad would buy me a new one every few months. :-)
P.S. This game got me into Green Jelly’s music. Love them!
It's incredible that they made a video game adaptation on one of the most popular Spider-Man storylines ever made in the 90s. I'm even shocked that its published by LJN itself. Good golly I remember playing these as a kid. The pixilated comic panels is incredibly made, and i love every single one of them.
This actually was my introduction to carnage
Maximum Carnage is still my favorite Spidey game. The music and comic book accuracy still pull on my heart strings.
These games were big parts of my gaming childhood. Love revisiting them even though maximum carnage is hard as hell lol
Man, I remember wanting to play Maximum Carnage so badly as a kid. Read full blown features and reviews of it in a ton of game magazines
I'm actually kinda surprised you and some others in the comments thought SA was harder than MC. I honestly think MC was harder, mostly because the bosses were a little more vicious in MC. NGL, it's interesting and a little refreshing to hear. Also, black cat is a total comic babe.
Great video, man! Cheers! 🍻
Your dad was the man. My dad surprised my sister and me with Sonic 2 for the Genesis. Such a special moment.
Borrowed Separation Anxiety as a kid me and my brother were around 8-10 years old. That game was hard for no reason lol. Great video
I had the panoramic roll up wall art for Maximum Carnage back in the day. Never played it but the artwork was too good to pass up.
As a kid, I never realized Separation Anxiety was a sequel from Maximum Carnage til many years later. I still have the cartridge for the game but man I would’ve loved MC had I known about it. Those graphics and gameplay look phenomenal.
Never played these games but ive read the Maximum Carnage comic and actually own it, loved the storyline. Very intense and dark
You'll love the game then, it's extremely faithful to the comic.
it’s why I just groan at how kiddy the modern marvel movies are, I remover the comics being way more mature and badass as a kid. Burton’s Batman movies are still the best comic book adaptations at hitting a dark atmosphere without venturing into rated-R territory.
When I was a kid I too had Maximum Caranage on the Snes the red cartiage, and I remember I never beat it but boy was it a great game
Separation Anxiety is a very underrated Faith No More song.
Hi Ian, I have a story about my dad a lot like yours. I had been playing Devil May Cry 2 that my cousin gave me and the original before that. I got home that day and my dad said he left something for me on the kitchen counter. It was a copy of Devil May Cry 3. He told me it was a payday he went to Meijer to get himself a new game but didn't see anything he liked, but he saw DMC3 and thought of me. It wasn't my birthday and I didn't do anything to earn it. He just bought it for me just because he thought of me. I still have all three and a PS2.
Not just the box art, but the cartrage for Maximum Carnage was red! That made it a go to for renting from the video store all the time.
I remember when my mom rented Maximum Carnage for me from blockbusters when I was a kid and I only played like a total of an hour of it because my tv at the time stopped working, as you can imagine how angry I was back then smh
Funcoland, thank you for reminding me that I'm over 30
Loved these games never owned either of them but a friend and cousin did. So they are very much tied to my early childhood around xmas
Getting a game with no box, no manual, and no real internet to look up strategies... You can't get that experience anymore.
I THINK the faceless robot looking guys in SA are supposed to be AIM troopers. That's what they look like to me. For those who don't know, AIM is an evil genius think tank in the Marvel universe most closely associated with MODOK. They show up in the first X-Men Legends game too and look a lot like these guys.
Dang dude, another killer retrospective. Love watching these 🤘
I heard a lot of great things about Maximum Carnage, I’ve seen lots of gameplay vids on it, and seeing how faithful it is to the comics and all that, I’m hoping to get a copy of it really soon. After seeing your thoughts on it Ian, you definitely convinced me that this game is worth it, despite some difficulty spikes. As long as the gameplay is fun, that’s all that matters, right? Awesome double retrospective on these games, and I hope to one day join Patreon so I can help you deliver the rest of the content🙏.
I love you and all the DanDans, and I hope y’all have a fantastic weekend😊❤️.
Definitely worth playing
Oh, man!! I forgot about these! THESE videos-retrospectives-about my favorite games and horror franchises are why I came and why I stay! 🤘🏼
My first experience with Spider-Man was reruns of the late 1960's animated cartoon. Still love that theme song.
I owned Maximum Carnage for Sega Genesis. Memories of it are rooted in me.
I don't recall the year, but I remember a school bus ride home and a friend just giving me a SNES copy of this game. He found it way too hard and did not have fun with it. There was no way I could say no to that red cartridge. While it's a game I've never beaten, I did have fun with it.
This game brings back memories I could remember playing it back when I was younger as well. Back then I could care less about the repetitiveness of it. The game was just that addicting to me. Honestly wish I could play them again today, along with several other games from my childhood as well.
Sick video once again man!
Buzzing Ian great work as always man GM showdown has been amazing Nigel and yourself certainly know how to please us DANDANS
i remember really wanting this game as a kid, and i have no idea how i heard about it, but i’m glad you brought up Funcoland cuz that’s exactly where my dad took me to buy it, and the box art is actually what even intrigued me even more! i still have the memory locked in. And immediately i loved this game, the art style was amazing for its time, and it sort of a scary feel to it. i remember not being able to getting even close to beating it as a kid. my dad still has our super nintendo, a couple years ago i finally beat this game and while it was still difficult, it was still di able, back in the day i thought it was impossible to beat this game
Both games were masterpieces in my nostalgic mind.
Spiderman 3 is my favorite... Yup, that's right ... And I liked the New Goblins outfit lol. I just wish he wore that retractable mask more ☺️
I just played thru both of these a few months back, def brought me back to my childhood, maximum carnage was a masterpiece it was sad that the sequel took such a step back
Oh man separation anxiety was a tough game I never finished it never played maximum carnage now time to enjoy the video
Two of my favorite games from childhood
26 years later we finally got a movie on this. and now this makes this game even more genius and awsome.
hope the third film is based on this story line. and we get to see spider man and vemon team to beat all the baddest save the world.
The Symbiotes were a big deal in regards to Spider-Man and my love for his comics, shows, and games, so these were a big deal to ya boi c:
I remember playing them as a kid and being a tad lost on what to do, and the difficulty was tough, but then giving them a retry a year later and beating them both xD
Thanks for the nostalgia fam, keep up the great work!
P.S. That part at the end was SO satisfying to watch 😛
Not a Spider-Man Fan But I Do Love Your Content you and Vee Infuso speak to me In a sense
Love this game, the red cartridge mus had been a charm back in the 90's
Yep, Had this. And after I played if for probably 9 months straight. over and over. Traded it to a friend for a controller, clay fighters 2, pigskin (football fighting game) and one other one.
I still vividly remember the red cartridge. It was definitely the coolest looking one out of all my Super Nintendo games.. btw love the wcw jacket !
Oh man I love your personal recounting of your Dad buying the game for you and your brother.
Dude that Nitro Jacket is sick
No lie the difficulty spike in these games were crazy as a kid 😂😂😂
Big time.
Fantastic viddie Ian. I loved Maximum Carnage both the game and the graphic novel as a kid. Never played much of Separation Anxiety but now I do for some reason even though you said it wasn't the best. 💙♥️
I had this on the genesis and played it non stop when I wasn’t playing MK2
Oh man, this takes me back. Growing up, I used to play Maximum Carnage on SNES with my friends during sleep overs. My brother and I would swap between him being Spidey and me being my main man, Venom.
We even had the whole Maximum Carnage arc...until he gave it to a friend. 🤦🏼
Only played Separation Anxiety through emulation WAY later.
I was aNintendo kid, but I loved Maximum Carnage. There needs to be more games where you can play as Venom.
Loved renting this game as a kid. Tbh rented most because mom wasn’t buying unless bday or Xmas. It reminded me of streets of rage and I love both.
Hi 616 glad I found ur channel again. Carnage was probably 1 of the top games aside street's of rage as far a beat them up side stroller. Great vid I just subscribed
Yea stick around!
Hey Ian, hope all is going great!
I grew up with the 90s cartoon and I'm even old enough to remember watching Spiderman and his amazing friends in the 80s 😬. I love Spiderman and I remember these games, especially Maxim Carnage on SNES and Genesis.
Both are good games maximum carnage doesn’t have co-op/multiplayer and separation anxiety has co-op multiplayer but doesn’t have the comic book cutscenes like maximum carnage does
That Murder Red cartridge was insane maaaaan
Those were the days
You are my hero 😂 always positive and made my day/night. Thanks
I got two kids they come first, we all enjoy the content
Thanks for watching!
Just started the video, I am ALL the hype!
I must be one of the only few that doesn't have the red cartridge for Maximum Carnage.
I think it is safe to say that Maximum Carnage was also my introduction (unknowingly) to Black Sabbath (The Mob Rules).
you are amazing man ,... plz continue
I still prefer separation anxiety, cause it gave me venom from the start and two player so me and brother could play. Even though graphically it was step back
What a shirt! Love seeing it, I gotta upgrade to the new one.
I loved Maximum Carnage as a kid, my friend had it on SNES and I ended up with his copy somehow (which I still have). To this day, I’ve never beaten it. I only played Separation Anxiety once, my friend and I rented it for Sega and it was definitely a step down.
I LOVED the OST too. Imagine my surprise years later when I was diving deep into Black Sabbath, hearing The Mob Rules, and immediately thinking “this is from the rooftop fight with Doppelgänger” hahaha. Great times.
Loved the story of your dad springing the game cartridge on you outta nowhere. It’s funny which memories stick with us over the years.
Great video man, I’ve really been enjoying this series.
I was actually trying to figure out what shirt he was wearing.
@@mikemcglade1304 The Offering with Jerry Horror - a great podcast!
Dude hearing that song and picturing the Doppleganger fight is so good, hahahahaha
Maximum Carnage was the one game when I was a kid that NEEDED an extra lives cheat and it didn't have a single code, as far as I'm aware.
I really thought the difficulty was unfair. Still played the hell out of it. And the music was headbangin
Never played the second one but me and my brother rented the first from blockbuster. Loved it.
Lmao LJN laughing Joking Numbnuts -AVGN
The funny thing to me is, I put Separation anxiety over Maximum Carnage simply because of two player mode alone. Me and my brother rented Maximum Carnage and that desire for a two player mode made us appreciate the sequel more. Separation Anxiety was hella glitchy tho. Especially at the third level. You couldn’t get through that Jungle/Forest stage with two players as it would glitch as soon as you tried to walk through the door. We put the code in after the third level to bypass the first three stages so we could play together. But I get it, Maximum Carnage is overall the better game.
I had maximum carnage for the Genesis. Loved it. The first game i forced myself to get good at.
I’m not tearing up, you are 🥹
That nitro jacket 🔥
The red case was mind blowing
Got Maximum Carnage for my birthday on the same day it came out so it was an awesome birthday gift!
Yeah, Separation Anxiety is pretty difficult to beat without a teammate.
I like the separation anxiety cover like
Spiderman is taking a group photo
With the symbiotes.😂
“Say cheese!”
@@616Entertainment 😂
Good god man that jacket is unreal.
This video was also good 😂
I never played Maximum Carnage... But Separation Anxiety beated by me (back in the days on SEGA) so many times on both difficulties and with both heroes, alone or with my brother. I love this game! 😌
WCW Monday Night Nitro Where The Big Boys Play like that jacket my man
I used to rent them both for the genesis when I was younger now I play them on an SD card with over 1000 I play them on legends flashback console
That Maximum Carnage commercial was dope
Big time.
Maximum Carnage the one Spider-man game I never beat. But I beat Separation Anxiety a tons of times tho and separate Anxiety was harder than a over cooked microwave tv dinner.
Fuck yeah! New retrospective to dive into 🤩
Cool story about getting that red cartdrige as a kid. i had it back in the day too I have no idea how I ended up with it but I did. I loved that game.
Mystery game, lol
this was a fun game, remember renting it from blockbuster and having a great time with my cousins
Hell yea!
Yeeeah ...I love green jelly but they really only supplied the. opening title song called "carnage rules". I loved that game. I never collected comics or really even read comics. But I grew up watching the fox kids cartoons for x men and spider man, and F4. I did start collecting the maximum carnage comic series by shopping at local comic stores. I almost got them all. But that's how obsessed I had become with this game. So many people say that game was so difficult....and maybe it could be at first...but once you learn the mechanics and where to find the hidden character assists, I had no problem. Beating carnage was a b**** , but all you really need to do is constantly switch back and forth between SM and Venom
I played Maximum Carnage for the 1st time via an emulator in 2003 (I was 13) & that game instantly went into my top 5 best Spider-Man games ever (now it's in top 10). On the other hand, I only played Separation Anxiety once for 10 mins. It was a really big disappointment in both graphics & presentation. Also, it's one of the most unfair games I've ever played.
Sweet jacket, Ian! WCW 4-life!
Holy unholy presence. I have never played this game, I originally was gonna say it needs to be remade, but I DO remember the animations because of Spider-Man cartoon maker. Idk if this is just a fever dream but I remember dad letting me play that every time I stayed home from school. But it was a computer game.
