Fully agree with you. I have for years played forged blades with traditional lofts, Mizuno MP-33s and now another that is almost identical to the MP-33. But I also admit at age 82 it would be nice to have some lost distance back. My 34 degree 7 iron used to be my 150 carry club 20 years ago, then 140 10 years ago, and then a year ago down to 130. My clubs had 120 gram stiff Rifle Lite shafts, needed lighter, so had a second set of the same heads built with 87.5 gram Nippon NS Pro Zelos 8 stiff shafts. That helped add 5 or 6 yards carry on average, up to 141 on a perfect shot. This past week I tested the new Titleist T150 and T200 7 irons with Nippon NS Pro 950 GH R flex shafts at the PGA Superstore I go to that has practice bays with Foresight GC Hawk launch monitors. Was pleasantly surprised, got added carry with essentially the same height, descent angle and spin. Then a day ago I tested the 2023 P790 7 iron with a DG 95 regular shaft. Previously had not found the P790 appealing for sound and feel. But this time I was really impressed. It looks good, topline not too thick even for me. It sounds good, there is a definite crack to a good strike, but it is a solid one, not at all tinny. Best of all, I got 14 yards more carry on average, which one might expect from a 30.5 degree loft versus 34 degree, but in addition I got 6 to 7 mph more ball speed, even greater peak height, less than one degree lower descent angle, and the runout (total yds vs carry) was less, meaning the ball will stop on the green better than with my own 34 degree 7 iron. Ironic, no? (Sorry, couldn't resist the pun.) I have always thought that the trend to stronger lofts was kind of a marketing gimmick, and turning a 7 iron into a 5 iron might give more distance, but at the expense of a lower descent angle and longer runoff, so shots would not hold the green. But the P790 has proven me wrong. And you are right. TM is really on to something.

I waited until I broke 90 to get myself a set of irons (that’s 2 years of saving up!) and bought this set 3-4 months ago.
There is always a honeymoon phase with golf equipment, but these have to be the best purchase I made toward my golf game. My 4th round with them I shot an 83! I usually shoot low to mid 90’s. Haven’t shot higher than 92 since I got these clubs.
I feel much more confident laying up and hitting 4 iron off the tee instead of driver, being rewarded for playing it safe is always nice (most of my strokes are from hitting it OB with driver).

@@mre_man Considering I went from Nike Cavity Back irons the dispersion is much better for me.
Let me preface by saying everyone’s swing is different, but when I hit these vs the Titleist T-200’s my dispersion was much tighter with the 790’s and distance wasn’t much different.

  • @trxe420
    @trxe420 Před 10 měsíci +2

The distance was nice in my fitting, coming off Mizuno MP18 blades, but what sold me on the clubs was 1) The dispersion, it was as tight as I have ever seen when I got the right shaft in it, 2) I was able to still work it (just not as much). I also did not have any hot shots after 2 hours of testing, they were all pretty much within 10 yards of each other and this was with me hitting normal all over the face shots and a few with a positive angle of attack. I was trying to get more forgiveness with the same workability I am accustomed too with my Mizuno's. Also testing the 225's and those were similar, but not as good of dispersion for me and I liked the muted satin look of these better. Yes, in the end, looks still matter. Great review Mark, really liked the distance control at the end that is super important!

What was your gapping like? I've read comments and seen other videos where PW-9-8-7 are spaced out and then 4-5-6 are bunched up. But this is likely a function of the strong lofts and swing speed of user.

I know looks shouldn’t matter, but I am getting a bit tired of the matte finish on the irons. I’d like to see a set that looks like my 2020 P770 irons. Mostly brushed steel with a bit of shine and just a little stripe of matte where the model number is.
Performance is paramount, but looks in the bag also matter when I’m dropping $1200 plus on a set of only 6 irons. Wish they had more of a Titleist T-series look to them.

They are not cheap. I ordered a set two days ago to replace my 2019 model P790s and it cost some serious cash. But I have always liked these irons, they fit my kind of game.
These are the irons that someone that hits the ball well, but doesn't have that extremely fast swing speed, could use. I am in my 50s and just don't hit my clubs as far as I did just 10 years ago. Knowing that I looked at clubs that could improve my ability to get my irons out there a bit farther while at the same time still have some kind of control.
Are the 2023 version of the irons better than my 2019? Probably not to be honest. Distances were identical. Dispersion seemed pretty close. The biggest reason I changed was because my current set was bought used and the lie angle is about one degree off from what I need. I have trouble fading these irons and no trouble drawing them and it turns out they were 1.5 degrees up. Even bent back they were still to high. But, if it wasn't for that I probably wouldn't switch.

@@garrywilcox2921 I probably wouldn’t have either except for the lie issue I have with the irons. They were 1.5 degrees upright and after bending are about 3/4 upright. It’s better but I still tend to hit shots left. After fitting I don’t have this problem. I agree that there probably isn’t a major need to change if you hit the current set well.

I have always liked the looks of the P790 right from the first version onwards. When I have tried them I like the performance, a bit longer than my i210s and spin is a touch low for me but both of those difference are purely loft driven. There are 2 downsides for me - they are just a bit too big for my eye (the P770s though are perfect) and unfortunately I have a bad experience of TM's manufacturing quality control in the irons or maybe it is just that their manufacturing tolerances are a bit too loose.
I am not anti TM, my driver is a Stealth. Is there likely to be a new P770 soon?

M1s were a really hard iron to bend back into correct loft and lie. Moved onto Ping i210s which when delivered were all exactly in accordance with spec. Manufacturing tolerance for which attribute? Are we talking about lie & loft or actual component tolerance?
The only issue I have is the flatness tolerance for the 2020 P770 irons and 2019 P790 on the back (non playing side) face. Their flatness spec is either very large or their Cpk is very small but yet acceptable for sign off on. On those models of irons, you tip them to the light and you see a lot of oil can dents fresh out of the wrapper. I sent back my 4-iron and 8-iron from my set because of this. TM did send me 2 replacement irons that were much better. I think this is the reason that they went to a Matte finish on the next gen. The matte finish hid any imperfections. I wonder if later runs of the earlier P770/P790 had this flaw due to tool wear - maybe their tools weren’t touched up since they knew that were moving on?

    I game 2019 P790…….no need to change.
My advice…..buy some 2019’s they will do the same thing and be 30% of the price.
Plus unless you play off 2, don’t bother with a fitting waste of time
Just make sure the length is correct and lie angle is standard

Looks like a Takomo 101T...which is about half the price.

With a 1/3rd of the resale value. When I buy clubs they have to have resale value on the back end. The DTC companys are nice up front....but no one wants to buy it on the back end.

@@MXJEFF94 anything I buy will have limited resell because they're 1" longer and 2 degrees upright, stiff with midsize grips.

5 to wedge is £1200 but most sites have them on offer already for £1050 a lot of money and if you want an Approach or 4 iron then your looking at around £1300 plus. For a new set of irons and woods it’s over 2k now it’s sickening

What happen to course vlogs, I miss the muppets. Bored watching how you hit a ball and remakes of clubs that are all the same.

How can you review a set of clubs with progressive "Flighted CG" with just the 7 iron? The practice of sending out 7 irons as review samples needs to change. This review tells me nothing because as far as I can tell the reviewer hasn't even played the clubs. One club does not a review make.

You believe one club will flight/launch/spin in the window but the other won’t.
If so, please find me the unicorn 🦄 field when you find it.

I think they look terrible. Somehow look chunkier. T200 looks miles better while in same category. Still manages to look like a players iron at address.

Haha 😂 haha 😂 this is wild if you think about it.
The video is packed with info.
      Doug could
      know about this club already,
      Know everything ever,
      Not watched
      Not listened,
      Or just be a troll.
Very hard to know which. Apart from that, great comment.
We learnt nothing from your comment. Hang on; maybe we learnt everything. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Different category. The direct competition is the T200 & they're VERY similar.
