    I love the "dont push" and the "aren't good enough" advice. People migrate away from pushy people. I do it. Everyone does it. Sell yourself, but dont annoy. And yeah, dont ask your mom if she loves your photos. She will always say yes. Ask strangers. If they think they are poorly shot, you have work to do. Anything I've done in my life Ive asked people to be honest with me because THATS more helpful than making me feel better and telling me I'm amazing.

    I've no desire to become a professional photographer and for me photography. and art in general, is about more than being a means of making you wealthy. What you didn't add to your list was the most basic question, 'why do I want to take photographs?' Clearly you're all about making money and that's fine, but your 'reasons why you won't make it as a photographer' video should be titled 'why you wont make it financially as a paid professional photographer?'

    • @Firstoffthemark
      @Firstoffthemark Před 8 lety +7

      +Nicholas Fox Every artist would like the opportunity to share their gift and art with others and make money off of it to help support their work. He is just trying to show people how to do it efficiently. And for some people it's not their calling to make money off of it.

    • @RCFunEveryday
      @RCFunEveryday Před 8 lety +5

      +Mark Kurowski Wrong.
      As an artist myself who does make some money off it, I much prefer to sell my work to someone who will enjoy the artwork, rather than just for my own financial gain.
      I have also turned down many commissions because I didn't think the photograph would work as a drawing.
      Not everyone is out for every penny they can squeeze out of people.
      Like the many CZcamsrs who choose to advertise on there videos for financial gain.
      Really, they aren't doing it to be helpful, they're doing it to make money.

    I often do not agree with many of the comments on these videos but appreciate that they are being made. This one however is precisely right, but not just for photographers. Being a good photographer is only a small part of having a successful business in photography, the same way being a good chef is a small part of running a successful restaurant. The business of photography is business, promotion, communications, management, creative in solving business problems such as that example of "I am in a small town", by turning that into an advantage instead of simply an excuse. Knowing the market is part of your job....not just what you assume it is but precisely who are the users of photo services, talk to 500 of them see what their needs are and become a solution for them. Small business, even mid size business is usually poor in market research because they think they have no time for that but it is foolish to make any decision about the business, equipment, training, promotion without knowing the real status of the market is.
    I often give talks to young business person club meetings or seminars and I am always so surprised how little understanding of the business side of their chosen field the audience have. Photographers are no different

    #2 depends I feel. I know some very successful photographers who do not shoot video. They are only stills photographers and they make a decent living only shooting stills. I think the more important message here (and maybe this is what you meant) is stay up to date with what is in style and what people like. For example, if doing duo-tones was popular but no longer is, then maybe stop doing duo-tones or find out what is popular now and try to work on that. I don't think you have to shoot video to be successful as a photographer. it may help your portfolio but I don't think it's a necessity.

    Great video, you are right on as to why certain people will never make it in the photography business.
    So I have a question have you ever done a poll to see how many of your current subscribers are watching your channel to learn the business aspect of the photography world and how many like myself are in it just as a hobby, one of the reasons I watch your channel is your passion for photography, and your passion shows in your work and of course your show is hilarious.
    I'm retired and have no desire to start a photography business, but none the less I enjoy your show and many others here on youtube, it is great learning new ways to do things, watching all the different channels have gotten me to explore other aspects of photography, and what I mean by that is all I was interested in before was strictly landscape photography, but now I am doing some macro, portrait, birding and wildlife and I am constantly trying other things. So thanks for having a great show.

    You are right. I know a daughter that helped her Dad's photo business increase. Because she did all the suggestions you mention. 1. got up and networked 2. started a blog talking about "her wedding day" stories, advice and suggestions. 4. got lean and only bought what was needed not what was wanted. 5. despite the competition, they increased their business by 30% within a few months. Fortunately her Dad was a photo geek. So keeping up with tech was never an issue. That's why number 4 was so important them. LOL
    Her Dad is at a better place now. But she continues to move forward and is getting better.

    My passion is photography, but in this island there is not even 1 full time photographer, not even in govern.

    Sure you don't want to relinquish your creative/artistic side. However, if you don't focus on the business side... that usually equals no jobs, doing jobs for free, or low rate jobs. I see photographers and videographers all the time much, much, much, much more talented that me, but no comparison in income, if at all from there work.
    If you start to get the jobs, the freedom to do what you want creatively will come.
    I see awesome photographers all the time who have far more name recognition, but they also have a full time job because there income in not commensurate to there talents (or drive).
    In life across the board you will find the best marketers and business minded people, are far more successful than the most talented.

    I agree with everything you said, it's the hard truth. However, I'm assuming this video is only tailored to those who sell their photos. A photographer doesn't necessarily have to sell their photos to be a great photographer. There are those who can create incredible shots, compositions, and exposures. All the while illustrating an incredible story, without selling a photo in their life.

    Nice advice Jared. One more thing to elaborate on this: for someone who's doing personal portraits and likes fine art stuff, which is something you can't sell that well but it's more of something you can evolve into your style and be recognized with, what would the easiest things to start with for getting money out of photography?
    Tons of people says "Weddings" but that's not something I'd feel comfortable doing because unless you're lucky and get the change to be 2nd for someone who's doing it so if you screw up it's not a big deal it's not like I can go from 0 to 100 and start shooting a wedding without experience and risk to ruin someone's best moment...expecially since I only have a 50mm which isn't ideal and can't afford more now, like a 24-70 or 70-200.What would you say about that? Should someone like me invest in a better lens and still try to do weddings or there's something else that pays that can be done with a 50mm still staying in kind of a comfort zone? I'm not saying I don't wanna risk it because that's a big part of our lives, I'm just saying I don't feel confident in starting with something THAT risky as my first paid job and with this lens.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar Před 8 lety

      +AndreCorner Rent. Point that cost in your price. Hide it or itemise it, it's up to you. Charge accordingly though and be totally honest. Say it's your first time shooting a wedding. What you charge less for the actual shooting you can maybe make some back up on the editing side of things if you're more confident in your skills within Lightroom/Photoshop/Aperture/Capture One or whatever it is you use to process your stuff. That's where a lot of my friends who shoot weddings spend most of their time and charge for. If you ever decide to do one then I'd most certainly hire or borrow a 24-70 (great for the reception and before and after the ceremony), a 70-200 (so you can hide at the back during the ceremony without being in the way) and a GOOD strap. I HIGHLY recommend the Black Rapids. They make carrying around a heavy camera and lens far less of a strain than the shitty neck strap your camera comes with.
      Make sure you get to know the couple a bit before doing it too. You can get a better idea of what they're looking for and they'll better understand what to expect from you too. Most people tend to be sympathetic to newbies but it's also a big day for them so the pressure is always on. It's worth looking at some contract templates too. These will differ from country to country so you're best digging into that yourself. It's just something to think about that you hope you won't ever need but will be happy that you do if you get into that kind of situation. Plus it makes you look more professional and they'll tend to respect you a bit more.
      Oh, and don't forget spare batteries. Lots and lots of spare batteries lol. And SD cards of course. Most rental places will also hire those out too for next to nothing so abuse that fact. Try using smaller cards too like 16GB then swap them out frequently. The idea being that you aren't putting all your shots onto a single card. If one dies on you at least you have SOME shots, rather than losing ALL of them. It's rare it happens but that fact doesn't really help things if it does.

    • @_Jeremyxlewis

      +AndreCorner very good point but IMO you should book the first wedding then put the funds of the wedding(paid on the day or before hand) and put that money towards the lens rentals and as you do this two or three times the remainder of the money made should well and truly be enough o buy the gear outright. ps you could email a few photographers in the area asking to assist. some often pay you for your time and I've found it to be very helpful to do this because when you build relationships it will mean they will be more likely to pass on a wedding they can't cover themselves :)

    True. You can’t just open a website or fb page and assume that customers are going to flock to you. You have to work to get yourself out there, network, try to have your reputation spread through word of mouth etc. Even shadowing an established photographer and using them as a mentor is a good idea if they will agree to do that for you. And you are right about posting interesting, original content that people want so you can “hook” them into being interested in you and your work.
