  • Most people saw these Splash Supercabs painted yellow patrolling the beaches on TV's Baywatch. I'd love an actual Hoff autographed truck used on the show!!! -Ben.

      @@antoniojmonetti I prefer a floor shifter with the numbers 1-5 and an R written on the knob and an extra pedal down below the dash for good measure, myself. My uncle had just the Splash back in the day, purchased new, I think it was a 94 or 95 in the light metallic blue color with the 4.0L V6.
      I got the opportunity to drive it a couple of times, it was a great little truck. Unfortunately, his wife ended up totalling it out sometime in the late 90s.

      @@antoniojmonetti I read that Ford was aiming to have a column shifter on the latest version of the F-150, but the customer focus groups that they brought it up with bitched and moaned about NEEDING the shifter on the floor for some reason. I wouldn't be surprised if the exact same situation happened when they were developing the new Ranger, too.

      I think that Ford brought out the yellow ones specifically for Baywatch. That color showed up literally right when they started using them on the show.
      I have to say, Yellow was probably my lease favorite color for the Splash but I'm not usually the largest fan of Yellow either. I loved the original Red, Light Blue Metallic, Black and White from the first couple of years. I also think when the Yellow ones came out, Ford had dropped some of the Splash-specific parts like the original grille that made the original Ranger Splashes so special and started using the standard Ranger parts on them which, in my opinion took away some of the Spashes specialness.

What they actually had was a regular cab, 4-cylinder thought the color was right and the price was to high. I ended up buying a very nice, dealer-customized (well) 1995 S-10 extended cab V6 5-speed fr about the same price. I drove it for 10 years and 160,000+ miles. I will say though, both the Rangers and S-10s of the era were great trucks though.

    Still a nice looking small truck to this day. Wish they still made compact pick ups. The new Ranger is practically the size of a full size pickup of the 1970's. One advantage of the stretched cabs of the 90's if not to offer much passenger space was to allow the front seats to recline. Older pickups with no space behind the (front) seat meant that the seats could not be reclined at all.

While I am not a fan of NASCAR, they had a cool NASCAR F150 on the bubble-body F150s, the great Eddie Bauers which I wish that they'd bring back and of course all the Harley trucks and King Ranches. Or, maybe today's trucks aren't as expensive as everybody thinks. In 2018 I paid $34K for a new F-150 4x4 Crew Cab XLT with 302a and FX4 packages. I don't think I could buy a similarly equipped Ranger for that today. I sometimes wonder if most people who buy midsize trucks ever compare what full size trucks are actually selling for or how efficient they are. They just assume the smaller trucks are a better value. But in my opinion midsize trucks only make sense if you really need something physically smaller...and they still aren't exactly small. I'd say it's even more true today than it was in 1994.

    Fast forward to 3 decades later, trucks as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, etc have gone from compact to mid-size pickups. Along with the fact in today's money market ratio & record high inflation rates it would be at least kind of impossible to find a nice truck for just over 22 grand. That's the price I paid for my new 2019 Colorado over a year back only because it used to be a salvage. Despite that, the truck is doing pretty good so far. If it wasn't a salvage, I'm aware the price would be around 30 grand.

    The new Rangers still don't have room in the back seat even being a so called 4 door. They're bloated in size physically but not in the cab or bed. Basically a small family sedan with an open trunk glued on the back and called it a truck.

    It’s sad even this extended cab truck 4x4 weighed only 3400 pounds while even 2WD “small” trucks now are all way over 4000 pounds and are often bigger and more thirsty than even full size trucks from the 90’s. The pre 2010 2WD standard cab Ranger was around 3000 pounds. Compare the light efficient previous Ranger to even a compact SUV of today like the VW Tiguan at over 3800 pounds or Toyota’s smallest truck, the Tacoma, at a very porky 4400 pounds. Bigger and heavier is often not better. Even the current Ranger is a big heavy needlessly thirsty truck.

    • @acemobile9806
      @acemobile9806 Před 4 lety +2

      Blame the safety nazis for a good portion of that. I didn't ask for all this crap but get it forced down my throat anyway. Plus the fact that everyone is running crew cabs nowadays & they expect them to tow what a full-size half ton did a decade ago.

    • @seththomas9105
      @seththomas9105 Před 4 lety

      @@acemobile9806 Yes, agree 100%. For some reason in the last 25 years Americans have decided they have to drive around in rolling bank vaults or they will die some horrible death in a car crash and the NTSB and NHSA think that unless we are enclosed in bubble wrap and wearing a 5 point harness to go to the grocery store the children will suffer. 9 more years to retire and move back to the 70's and 80's.

    • @sharedknowledge6640
      @sharedknowledge6640 Před 4 lety

      David Oliver It’s less the safety nazis and more the whole ‘Murican love of bigger, heavier, and more impressive, than your neighbor’s truck. The safety standards haven’t changed much since the 3000 pound Ranger. Most truck buyers in America are all about bragging rights. My truck can tow more than your truck. Or my diesel truck has more torque than your truck. Or my stupid aftermarket exhaust that wakes every sleeping baby along my entire every drive is louder than your exhaust. Or pretty much those with a small penis who feel a need to claim some sort of irrational advantage. So our small trucks went from 3000 pounds to 4400 pounds to help insecure buyers feel more macho while in other parts of the world you can still buy a small light fuel efficient pickup.
