Building an Intel 486 VLB DX 2-50Mhz machine, 16MB RAM, Tseng ET4000AX, SB16 Value

- Building a 486 VLB system into the case of another 486 system. The previous system had suffered a leaking Varta battery, and severe corrosion.
With an Intel DX-2 50mhz at the heart of the system, 16MB FPM modules, an ISA Tseng ET4000AX grahpics card and an ISA Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16 Value.
Oh...wow. millions of years ago I had a similar system, I tried and failed to run the first mech warrior pc game on it. Finding a video card for this system will be difficult. Awesome video!

I will find something for it eventually, VLB cards, especially here in the UK, are quite expensive even for a basic one, but that will not stop me!

Also, you always want to populate VLB slots starting from closest to the cpu and then work your way out.
Something about the VLBus being a direct connection to the CPU and less chance of interference, coupling issues, etc.

i did a 486DX2 66, 32MB RAM, ATI Mach32, ESS Audiodrive PC build
The DX2-66 was what I upgraded to from the DX2-50 on my childhood machine.
After that, it was a jump to the Intel Pentium 100Mhz.

Nice build. But why are you using an ISA video card instead of a VLB video card? This ISA Tseng ET4000 card is pretty much bottlenecking the performance of the machine. Any cheapest VLB card would outperform an ISA card.
Hello Peter, for the moment, the choice I had was limited to the ET4000 or a Trident TVGA8900C ISA card.
I currently do not have even a cheap VLB card in my collection. Excitement got the better of me, and I really just wanted to get this machine up and running.
I figured that I would be able to source a VLB video card at a later date and for the time being just deal with the slower card.
I suppose, in some ways, no different than how it used to be 😊

@johntrevy1 Hi John, as far as I can see, it is just a generic case. There is no marking on the case of who manufactured it.
All there is on the back of the case near the PSU is a barcode with 486DX2/66 dated 30/10/95 with the numbers 1030436130 under the barcode.
The PSU appears to be unbranded with model number PTP-2006C. Doing a little Google search, the model number brings up DTK computers.
That is all the information I can provide on the case. I hope this is of some use.
Yep nice case! Im trying to fix a UMC socket 3 board currently, which has many damaged by varta tracks. I want to get my umc u5s-super25 cpu going in it.
Thanks, yeah I've got a small pile of boards that need that kind of intricate work needing to be done on them. I've seen it done by others on the tube, and from what I can take from what I've watched is, as long as you have the correct equipment, and a steady hand, there is no reason why you should not be able to achive your goal.

Haha, tis why I have not given it a shot....yet. I would quite like to move into that kinda thing in the future. I've got enough stuff going on at the moment.
If you have any old circuit boards to practice on first that would be a good way to try and steady your hand.

What's the difference between ET4000 and ET4000AX? Thanks.
Hey Conenion, they are both essentially the same card, the AX being an enhanced version of the ET4000, featuring improvements in performance and additional functionality by optimizing memory access and bus performance.
That meant that the ET4000AX could handle higher resolutions and color depths more efficiently, making it faster in many cases, particularly in high-color and high-resolution modes.
Primarily using the ISA bus, the ET4000AX was designed to better handle the available memory bandwidth with support for up to 2MB of video memory in some configurations, allowing for higher resolution displays and better performance in memory-intensive operations.
