Caine is a true artist and seems like a decent hearted human being. One of the best actors of his generation. The other nominees are amazing too in their talent
Yes, I LOVE Michael Caine and have seen most of his movies over the years since "Alfie" in 1965, and Haley Joel Osman was AMAZING in the Sixth Sense, but I WISH it had gone to Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile. His role as John Coffey was JUST the BEST thing I have EVER SEEN, it is one of my very favorite movies of all time, and the way he played his character has me in tears EVERY time I watch The Green Mile. That was a tough year for Supporting Actor since they were all so fantastic, but I STILL feel that Michael Clarke Duncan REALLY had the edge over them, in my opinion. RIP to him (it was weird seeing Michael Caine in a roll where he actually spoke in an American accent! I have never seen him do that before. LOVED his acceptance speech, and I agree with him that the Oscar should just be presented and not say "the winner is"
Im not sure if his performance was the best among all the nominees. But his speech! One of the sincerest and one of the most beautiful that I have ever heard!
oh wow, what a year of performances! i've seen the talented Mr. Ripley, magnolia and the green mile and i could never choose one. why is everyone sleeping on how good Jude was in this film in terms of oscar performance though?
Yeah. Law was absolutely charismatic in his star making turn. But with that said, with Cruise, Duncan and Osment being there giving some really iconic turns. It's kinda understandable to get a bit overshadowed.
Jude was truly mesmerizing in Although he lost this award, he did win the BAFTA for this role [the British equivalent to the Academy Awards]. That had to feel good. Magnolia had so many memorable performances. In addition to TC’s nomination, I wish Philip Seymour Hoffman has gotten a nod for his soulful work.
Speaks for this Oscar win itself honestly. Such a dull performance which got awarded because Weinstein produced it and had the Oscars in his pocket like no other.
@@Izaan2810 True. As much as I love Michael Caine, hell... I thought his Scrooge was better. Don't get me wrong, I love this movie, and everyone in it. I love Dr. Larche and his bad accent. But Harvey Weinstein was such a nasty weasel. And the fact everyone has to throw his name up there like it was in the contract (it might have been, I'm not sure) is disgusting to me. I'm sorry Michael Caine had to do that. 😒
I am gonna be honest here. Cruise in Magnolia was simply on a whole another level to literally everyone nominated here. Joel Osment would definitely be a close second. But I would agree that Caine was the weakest by a mile here.
@@Izaan2810 Tom Cruise shouldn’t even have been nominated for Magnolia. An over-the-top performance where you can see him “acting” in every scene with every gesture. But then, Tom Cruise had always been a bigger blockbuster star than an actor known for his acting. Even his best acting work, Born on the Fourth of July, paled in comparison with Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot by a mile. Very effortful performances in general. Let’s not ever pretend he is an actor at the same level as DDL, De Niro, Pacino, DiCaprio, Nicholson. And Michael Caine, an acting legend himself. My personal vote would have gone to Haley Joel Osment, a performance so terrifying it still astonishes to this day.
Just saw this movie again yesterday after seeing it back 24 years ago. Happy to see Michael Caine won, even though it could have easily been any of the other nominees. His heartfelt speech worth Oscar alone.
This Oscar win till this day is just absolutely bizarre. Can't believe that Tom Cruise didn't win here. His performance was simply on a WHOLE another level to literally everyone nominated here, no offense to anyone, it's just that I also feel that Cruise in Magnolia was the best acting performance of the year 1999 in general, be it lead or supporting. Caine shouldn't even have been nominated honestly. Christopher Plummer for The Insider should have gotten here!!
Every time I watch this it brings me to tears...Just the love. Adoration and respect ftom his fellow actors giving him a standing ovation says it all..
Oe hermano como subes los videos de los premios oscar?? quiero subirlos de las ceremonias del 2012 para adelante pero me bloquean el video cuando termino de subirlo...??
5:- Michael Caine 4:- Jude Law 3:- Michael Clarke Duncan 2:- Haley Joel Osment 1:- Tom Cruise(The best acting performances by a mile here technically. Both him and Haley. But to choose one, I go with Cruise.)
Tom Cruise should not even be in the equation. The best performance by far were Osman or Duncan. They are still remembered to this day but Cider House Rules. The Oscar Awards are bogus and they are not taken seriously and their credibility is shot.
I watched it again last night. OMG at the performances......so many times a simple nod of the head by the actors took the place of a heavily, bloated script. Amazing.
He seems like a wonderful person but in this case I really don’t think he should’ve been given the Oscar when you take a look at Michael and Haley’s work. I think he was given the Oscar because of his past.
I thought Tom Cruise would win this time. Anyway I guess Judi Dench giving the Oscar on stage was longer than her performance lenght in Shakespeare in Love. Michael was right about Jude, a word from classic Alfie to modern Alfie. All parts of the speech were great except for the Weinstein part
This is the toughest year for supporting actor category in oscar history. But not for Michael Caine. Not even worthy of being nominated. Definitely, Tom Cruise or Haley Joel Osment should've won. Michael Caine just won this for the name of value.
The best speech ever, but also one of the few times they actually gave it to the weakest of the five. My list: 5) Chris Cooper 4) Hayley Joel Osmond 3) Tom Cruise 2) Jude Law 1) Michael Clarke Duncan
Without any doubt, the greatest supporting actor in history. And there will never be greater one. He was never meant to be the main star, but he is the man who put supporting actors and roles on the map.
@@Izaan2810 Caine was the weakest and Cruise was the next weakest; the award should of went to Duncan or Osman; everyone knows it except a few folks in denial.
Worst choice in the category, and he already had an Oscar too… one of the most baffling acting choices in the past few decades for sure. Haley Joel Osment should’ve won.
Good perfomance but Michael Caine was the weackest of the nominees. 5. Michael Caine (The Cider House Rules) 4. Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley) 3. Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile) 2. Tom Cruise (Magnolia) 1. Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense)
I think Michael Caine is a good actor, in no way was it worthy of an Oscar for Cider House Rules. Caine's performance was dismal espcially when compared to Oscar worthy performance of Michael Clark Duncan for the Green Mile and Haley Joel Osman for The Sixth Sense. The treachery of the Oscar's to give the award to one of their inner circle buddies instead of those who were worthy. The Oscar's have a long history of injustices and other awards such as the Golden Globe and People's Choice Award came to promenence. This was the straw that broke the camel's back and the credibility of the Oscar's was damaged. Who even watches the Oscar's anymore. This was the last one I watched.

Michael Clarke Duncan, Haley Joel Osman, Michael Cane, are phenomenal actors
That was one occasion in which THEY ALL deserved to win!!
That little boy broke my heart with his performance in the Sixth Sense. I wanted to jump in the movie and hug him.
Interesting way of presenting the nominees. & I think it was super awesome of Michael to acknowledge the other nominees!
Probably the best oscar speech.
I'm sorry but Michael Clark Duncan is UNDENIABLE!! 💙RIP

R.I.P. Michael Clark Duncan :(
Michael Caine is one of the greatest ones ever. He should have won many more then he did.
A truthfully speech by Sir Michael Caine.
Im not sure if his performance was the best among all the nominees. But his speech! One of the sincerest and one of the most beautiful that I have ever heard!

Haley Joel was really in the wrong category . His role was not a supporting role. He was the main and focused character in Sixth Sense.

Osment for me...
Alfie 😀
Great speech! Interestingly tepid response for the Weinsteins too.
