- One of the best monologues anyone has ever done on TV, including David Brenner himself. David works off the news of the day (literally) and the week or so before, getting applause on almost every joke. Every young, new comedian should study this as a template. Check it out.
One of the funniest nights ever was the night that Brenner was hosting the Tonight Show in the 1970's. This one joke still cracks me up today. It went something like this, but Brenner acted it out on the stage: "I was on the subway the other day, and the seat was dirty, so I put my newspaper on the seat and sat on it. This stranger comes along and says to me, 'Pardon me, but are you reading that newspaper?' " ...A pause for laughs... "So I looked at him, stood up, turned the page, and sat back down, and told him, 'Yes, I am.' "

He DEFINITELY was one of the all time greatest stand up comics, I was a fan since I was a kid. Rest In Peace David.

When you hear a comic today say something like, 'I just heard this on the radio in my hotel room before the show" you say, "Get a new act." But when it comes from someone like Brenner, who was one of the guys who fathered in that kind of set up, it's perfectly appropriate.

Johnny Carson had him on 150 times, he was bigger than we thought he was. We just didn't have cable and internet back then.
I haven't heard anything from David Brenner since the 90's and yeah I grew up with him in the 70's, I would see him on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Then today I see that he passed away... RIP David Brenner.

I saw david at the melody tent on cape cod in the 70s. Clean comedy...he never went for profanity....
He is very funny, if you don't need the F-bomb every other word, or the "funny" to be gross or about hurting others. He had such a funny view of life.
