Mercedes-AMG SL63 vs Porsche Spyder RS | Chris Harris Presents Llandow Laps

- We’re back for Episode 4 of Llandow Laps, and this time, Chris Harris is getting behind the wheels of two high-performance convertibles. The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 and the Porsche 718 Spyder RS are both German drop-tops, but that’s where the similarities end. The Mercedes sends 585 PS to all four wheels courtesy of its twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, while the rear-wheel-drive Porsche’s naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six produces 500 PS - though the 500kg weight difference between the cars should help to level the playing field.
The UK might be the convertible car-buying capital of Europe, but in the typical Llandow weather you’d struggle to see why. Dark clouds looming on the horizon and the usual amount of rainfall might just work in the sure-footed SL 63’s favour though, provided Chris can keep all that extra mass under control.
So, buckle up for another wheel-spinning Grudge Match, where we also explore the complexities of camera placement, baffling door handles, and Collecting Cars’ incredibly accurate lap-timing method.

Llandow Laps is our exciting new series, hosted by Chris Harris at the 'legendary' Llandow Circuit in South Wales.
The concept behind Llandow Laps is to pitch two vehicles from the same genre against one another to see which is faster; and the first series will feature grand tourers (with a twist), hot hatches, supercars, roadsters, and restomods.
As well as showcasing the cars’ performance on track, the films will also reveal the behind-the-scenes work required to produce the end result, introducing some of the personalities from the Llandow Circuit and the Collecting Cars team.
The science bit: All cars featured in Llandow Laps will be unmodified from the specification seen on screen, they’ll be running with a full tank of fuel, and they’ll be fitted with sensible tyres available on the road cars from the factory.
Lap times will be recorded, and a winner of each head-to-head will be revealed - although there’ll be more focus on the driving experience and character of the cars than on the numbers alone.

That intake noise from 8 to 9k rpm is to die for 🥵
How is the Merc £40k MORE expensive than the Porsche??
Mercedes have gone absolutely mad…
Because the Cayman is not a direct competitor to the Sl class, the 911 is the one to compare.
Good luck trying your buy a spyder rs at its list price
After the markups on the rs, it will be the more expensive car..
GT4 RS a thing of desire 😍😍😍😍😍
The Merc handed the Porsche’s ass to it and it is extremely luxurious. That’s why it’s 40K more, and at these price points it’s near irrelevant as it’s down to personal choice. Luxury or nerdy heel toe woollen jumper pot belly down the pub crap.
Nice placement of microphones to get the turbo swooshing coming from the SL. Excellent vid as always!
No need for the result in a wet track with Cup 2 tires/tyres 😂and the whale being AWD :). Give me the Spyder RS...the engine, sound, transmission, and beautiful design, plus it will not depreciate like a falling rock (Mercedes). Total different cars for different people..nice car, the MB, for a comfy daily ride, but give me the RS for a weekend enjoyment car.
@@earthtoimaniHe is speaking English, he just made a spelling mistake. Grow up you child.
If you have a daily then sure have the Porsche as a weekend toy. But if you needed a car for many uses the Mercedes fits the bill. Totally different products.
@@earthtoimani Tires is perfectly good English
It's tyres, or tires. British English, American English - English. Perhaps too you could punctuate as if you're English. It helps, when trying to be clever, to actually be clever, English or not. Cretin.
Calm down😂

Cannot wait for the episode with the alfa in, that flyby Chris put on his story a few months ago never fails to give me goosebumps, can’t get many sounds better than that twinspark engine. A thing of beauty
...yes...the Alfa is a proper car. Less tech, more fun!!!
And it’s lightweight!!!! THAT’s the difference
Coming next week!
Too much tech in the AMG for me. When it takes that long to do do things like select a gear, put the roof up/down or open the door, theres something wrong. I'm not anti tech, but buttons are good for a reason, you know where they are, you know what they do.
From what I can see in internet comments, almost all of us hate the screens (vs real buttons). But manufacturers love screens for cost savings. How do we win this? And this is why I am keeping my S63 Cab forever - real buttons! Maybe low sales figures will cause them to rethink screens, but how will they know why people don't want those cars?
Neither task is difficult and neither require the screen, its just journalists jumping from car to car. Owners would have no problem.
Chris did make it look much harder than it is, no disrespect. He was in a hurry and unfamiliar with the system. I still prefer the actual buttons in my S63 Cab, but if I upgrade someday I'm sure the new tech will be just fine. @@avus303
@@avus303you still have to look at a screen to operate it but, buttons, dials, I drives etc can be done mostly without much looking. Also, more personalization can be done in design with buttons not to mention tactile nature. Some of the earlier mercs have the loveliest buttons.
@@eastbaystreet1242 Totally agree. I find it quite bizarre as I have yet to meet a single person who says "I love the screen in my car vs buttons". But I think the other argument over cost saving is that the majority of people want more and more tech in their cars, and manufacturers need to find a neat solution to put everything.
Interesting combination for head-2-head. Didn't see that one coming. Or didn't know I needed to see this one. Should be properly interesting race.
If you want to avoid all the fluff, jump to 4:50.
Too much arty farty shite for me, who wants to know how they time the bloody laps, it's not rocket science..!!
Thank you so much for this series Chris! I used to go to Llandow with my dad in the seventies. There were all sorts of goofy class races and bodged up vehicles and it was so much FUN. Just
like your series is so much FUN!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I like the little behind the scenes at the start, thanks for the quality upload.
Another epic video! Loving the behind the scenes bits too! 👏👏
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
I think it'd be a much different time in the dry but the merc is still impressive.
The sound from the Spyder RS is a winner everyday of the week 🤤
I love the prep and behind the scene work
🤦🏽♂️ given the weather conditions this Grudge match is kind of pointless 😢😢😢
begs the question of why choose a welsh racetrack
We hear you! We prayed for sun gods on the day...but sadly the British weather meant rain rain rain. Hope you enjoyed it for the entertainment at least.
You made my point. FOBs are one of the worst inventions and now we are stuck with them. Love your work, keep it up Chris!
Walk into the Mercedes dealership, throw in the money. "Here you go Sir, your SL63!"
Walk into the Porsche dealership, throw in whatever you want. "Ahem excuse me Sir, you need to be on the list for the GT4RS, sorry!"
Loving the camera blurb at the start
Thanks!
It's just my opinion. There is to much behind the camera stuff happening which really isn't that interesting. I would appreciate more of Chris Harris and on track action tbh.
Give me Clarkson, Hammond and mr.Slow, much more fun
Spot on mate.
I second this. The production quality seems to be getting higher on collecting cars but way too much behind the scenes stuff on this particular episode
100%
Love the breakdown of the camera setup!
We're glad you enjoyed this!
What is more impressive is the time of the GR Yaris on track. Best value for money track toy
Love the show! Just needs to be relocated from the rain forest 😂
We hear you! Praying for sun next time ☀
Love this series. Brilliant!
Thank you, means a lot.
Man, I love the editing; it's brilliant!
Great vid as always ❤
Content worth watching. Keep it up!
Your video was so well put together. Bravo!
Thank you!
That was fantastic, amazing driving skills, that Porsche sounds phenomenal
Sounds even better in real life 😉
@@collectingcars I bet. What an engine. Stunning
Is there ever a day when this track isn’t wet. Really messes up the whole show.
Begs the question: are there a lot of days when it doesn't rain in the UK - so maybe all-wheel drive cars make more sense there.
We filmed the series over 2 days at the back end of last year. We really prayed for sun but sadly the sun gods didn't have our back. We hope you found it entertaining at least. Next time...SUN 🙏
Odd comparison...? Yeah, maybe... but they're both great looking cars, they'll both be quick and they'll both slide. Entertainment is all I'm looking for here... because I damn well sure can't afford either...
I'm not much of a Merc fan but I like the way that looks.
Astonishing amount of surrounding fluff in these videos.. 😅
Crackin vid. Love it!
I have an irrational hate for the SL63. its just so insanely heavy for no good reason. for reference a model 3 weighs LESS and people complain about EV weight
road hugging weight.
And they have the cheek to call it the ‘Sport Light’
@@robbo777cricket super light, and honestly everything after 1957 is meant for light sporting duty . So it kinda makes sense seeing as all of them are GranTurismos
It's a luxury GT ,none of them are light..
@@Cyborg_Auto yeah , light as in not going to be doing 5+ laps around a course, but perfectly fine doing canyon runs at moderately high speeds and cruising @150+mph on the autobahn . Consider all GranTurismos to be the automotive equivalent of a transcontinental private jet. The motorcycle equivalent being the sport touring class, perfectly fine going across the continent and decent enough on track.
What a driver Chris is, legend. I'd love the porsche but I reckon the merc is more comfy in normal driving and as fast and truthfully less exciting than the porsche. Comfy still wins coz its also fast
It is interesting - I agree with you completely. Most folks who can afford these cars are not pimply 18 year olds who are street racing a lot. Most of these cars get driven by 55 year old geezers like me. I don't want to race anybody. And who would you race anyway - a Tesla will crush some multimillion dollar supercars. Most of us are driving these cars like GTs most of the time (sure we pound it once in a while for fun). So that's why I opt for the GT (the Merc).
Both beautiful and impressive cars
I’d still have the Porsche. Thank you very much.
11:21 I love it, all wet times, this is such proof of what people say about the weather. 👍💪✌
I wish they kept behind the scene stuff, behind the scene
The Porsche wins on sound alone, the merc sounds like my explorer.
Weather is so bad there you might as well just test AWD vehicles to keep them comparable
Does it ever not rain in Britain? Seems like every test it’s raining or the track is wet because it was raining. Redo it in the dry, I would take the RS any day of the week.
Whenever I see the director Wally I just keep hearing “ Toast,it’s Clem Fandangoo, can you hear me?”
It would make much more sense not to use standing start for hotlaps and not use phones to measure times and be precise with GPS.
this shows how much of a weapon the GT3 is. basically same engine and weight but 2 seconds faster
Yes but on dry is another story as you know very well. Recommendable Mercedes SL for octogenarians
I'd love to see flying laps too - that's a better assessment of a car's overall performance as it doesn't favour the off-the-line acceleration as much.. Just my $.02
Thanks for the great show!!
Very different audience these cars have. That said, great stuff 🙌
The one time there is a dry day at Llandow, you will see a Prius top this leaderboard..
Love the exhaust note on the SL - that AMG V8 is as iconic as the Porsche 9,000 rpm redline.
Going to be interesting to see how many other cars finish below the gr Yaris
The small track = Thumb tack
The Merc = Sledgehammer
😏
😎🇬🇧
Tyres are so different on theses cars cup2’s on the Porsche just don’t work in those conditions dry times please.
Whats next week? A bus vs a single seater?
Would still pick the Porsche every day. The sound, mid flat 6 lump, looks…
One you can buy. One you can only dream of owning, and by the time you can buy it. Something better will be available. That's why classics rule.
The turbo puffer noise are great, but that Porsche NA is something else.
As modern cars get more complicated, so do the videos about it. Exhausting to watch, despite Chris and those amazing cars
Behind the scenes DP stuff is fascinating, love this channel
No Chris, the noise of the Porsche takes it..... surely?!?
The Porsche wasn’t on Cup 2’s was it? They’re a bit sketchy in the wet. Love these vids but they always remind me not to go to Llandow. It’s invariably pissing down…
The Yaris still up there 👀
Astonishing given price n power
Chris. Please review a 718 Spyder in a MT. The last and final MT boxster. In my opinion the best boxster you can get.
R232 needs haptic buttons, switches and a major diet!
Impressive
Can you run the W213 E63s or the GT63s in a grudge match?
Eight lap times, all in the wet and many with sticky tires meant for the dry. The fact that a new SL is 2 tenths off the pace of a new GT3 RS begs the question, why don’t we wait for the dry if we’re doing this to compare optimal performance lap times? 🤷♂️
I guess they schedule all those folks and have to shoot when they have committed to the track rental. It seems apparent that the Porsche would win easily in the dry. But most of the car reviews I see out of the UK are in the wet (Matt, JayEm, etc), so maybe it makes sense for Brits to buy cars that do well in the wet...
The 'operating systems' on new cars are ridiculous.
That alone would stop me from buying one.
Give me buttons, that I don't have to take my eyes off the road to push.
I like it a lot but it‘s pointless at 6 degrees in the wet. You must do it dry at least at 15 to 20 degrees. Nobody is going flat out with rear wheel drive car that has 500+ hp
Does it ever not rain at Llandow?
The next grudge match should include Ben Collins aka, (the Stig) Then see who comes out on top?
His driving skills are legendary..
Could do without the behind the scenes stuff personally
If you have interest for video production and cars (like I do) I really enjoy these first BTS bits.
Hopefully you can race them again in the dry. Regardless, I prefer the RS.
I'm sure 90% if convertibles have been caught in the rain.
I sure was travelling through Belgium heading back to the UK and it decided to rain heavily for 10 miles. Luckily I kept the speed up and only my head got wet 😂
Can we add in drivetrain config and engine placement to the stats screen? Quite important metrics im sure Mr Harris would agree.
Other than that, it’s always a pleasure to watch the channel and monkey drive!
Also differential locking methods (plated/torsen/open/e-diff) would be a lovely nerdy thing to state on the stats too🤓
Was just checking out Buggati's V16... Now I'm here
With Chris on door handles and keyless entry (remote plippy fob is fine though!)
In comparison to the older SL AMGs 1970 kg is about in line isn't it?
Results would have easily switched in dry conditions. Every episode I have watched has been in the wet. Will it ever dry out in Landow? I doubt it. Maybe just drive 4WD SUV's around the course, since that's what seems to be the theme here. I don't know how you Brits can stand that weather day after day. Kudos to you!
Over the past several months, there might have been 2 or 3 dry days a month. Maybe all-wheel drive sports cars will be the way to go.
@@Spenny909 I agree. But an all wheel drive car against a rear wheel drive car in the wet, is a big mis-match. Which we saw with the GR Yaris and the Mini-Cooper last episode as well.
@mikearend997 Or more of a real-world test? Llandow is a slow circuit, add the weather and we have something more like British roads. I think it is quite fascinating to see a GR Yaris lap just a second or so behind a GT3. Or, a M5 CS perform so well. ...Today, I drove 350 miles in pouring rain. I felt at ease in a Cayenne Turbo S with winter tyres. The other week, I drove 15 miles in a Ferrari in similar weather and it was not as much of a pleasant thrill as it is to drive in the dry. But maybe I am digressing and you have the joy of driving cars and nice roads and in nice weather.
2 suggestions
Get a weather forecast and rent the track only in dry days
Take about what tires you are running on the car. I have no idea if they were PS5, Cup 2, or other
Great suggestion. Find an available day at Llandau 2 days out because the weather forecast is fine and also secure bookings for all the cars you need to film for the day and expect all the planets to align at such short notice. Good one.
Dry track in wales? lol
Love seeing Chris back to doing car vids, reminds me of the Chris on cars days. One thing I don't get though, why don't CZcamsrs ( not just here) use track apps like " track addict " or " race chrono" to record the times, would be a bit more accurate. Regardless love the content
Bloody new cars a nightmare when you are renting one they give you the car card and tell you where in the parking lot it is and you spend your vacation trying to figure the bloody thing out
Which is quicker on a flying lap?
Don't tell me you can't get more accurate timing equipment?
can't wait for the Alfaholics run. Is there any chance it will be next? pretty please?
Takes some minerals to hit the chicane there like that in the wet! Get it wrong and you’re in the caravan park
That test is not ok. 😂🤦🏽♂️
The Spyder roof is not limited to 120mph anymore as Chris states, its good to the top speed of the vehicle
This comparo is wacky and would almost never happen. One is a sports car. The other is a GT. Clearly the SL is competing against the Turbo.
You press the roof button and then press it again and hold it to drop the roof without the touch screen.
Is there no footage of trying to put the RS top back on in heavy rain? That would be highly amusing and maybe a betting line on whether puddles form inside the cockpit before the task is complete. 😆🌧️
You latch it in the front and roll it on…
why are they not timing with an AIM solo???
The Spyder looks so much better without a roof😊
GR Yaris still more than holding its own amongst these titans.
Tyres will decide. All being equal, the Porsche by 2-3 seconds. 😂
I love people engaging in conjecture just because their favourite brand didn't win... It wasn't the tires that made the difference, it was the 4WD, the mercedes was ahead the entire lap due to the start, and being able to put power down better out the corners. On a dry day and a flying start, of course the porshe should win, but these people aren't gods and can't change the weather at will. This is the UK after all!
Yes, 4WD also helps, but cup2 tyres are notoriously bad in the wet, like bad enough that people don’t want to drive them even on the street in wet.
@@MrRandomTwat That’s probably due to fear of hydroplaning as the cup2 tires don’t have many water grooves, but this track wasn’t waterlogged enough for any hydroplaning to occur
If the track was dry the boxster also would have an unfair advantage because of tyres...
On this track given the same tyres i'm not sure the boxster would win, even on dry conditions!
@@tommolewis3105did the Merc on my drive give the game away? 😂
Too much f'ing around, just stick with the cars please. I don't care about how many cameras and how clever the director thinks he is just stick with Harris and cars because he is the one we came for and we respect his opinion.
Agreed
This needs to be re run in the dry!!!
I don't know where Landau is, does it always rain there?
Next time the cars should be tested on ice maybe with slick tires. that's more realistic. (sarcasm)
or wet grass! slick as snot.
Don't worry it's not like it ever rains in the UK.
