- We look back to August 2019 on a very memorable hunt. I have stalked Roe bucks for over 30 years and have dreamed about taking a black Roebuck in Germany for nearly as long.
Last August saw my dream become a reality, but not without its challenges, as we made the long drive to join Eike Mross - My friend & guide and to be taken out on his family’s area to pursue the elusive black buck.

Waidmannsheil! Great example of „Das ist Jagd“ and how to professionally deal with such a situation. Even a Pro like Owen misses or wounds an animal, but to follow through and try to relief the animal from its misery is what a real hunter does!
Thanks, as hunters we have to be honest and hold our hands up when mistakes are made. Too many hunters hide behind a reality that every hunting story is perfect.

I knew the shot had to be very low because the buck jumped high in the air this is a typical sign for a very low shot on the shoulderblade
Yes, unfortunately mistakes happen - it's called being a hunter. We learn from these experiences and do everything we can to put them right.

Our ethics and follow-up-searches with well trained dogs is what separates us from the american hunters.
Should have the dog with you from the start.
We would normally have a dog at hand when hunting at home on our ground in the UK. However, we were hunting in Germany on a friends ground, in which the usual protocol/best practice is to call the local tracker/dog if a situation like this arises.
Poor buck badly shot, all that gear and can not clean shoot.
Nothing to do with "all the gear", it's simply pilot error. Yes, unfortunately mistakes happen - it's called being a hunter, James. We have to learn from these experiences and not hide from them as true hunters, then do everything we can to put them right and be better next time.
