In the Pirate Codex as set down by Morgan and Bartholomew, a pirate requesting a parley can be denied that parley. By pretending to forget the word and having the opposition say "parley" that put Captain Jack Sparrow in the position to accept or deny their parley, instead of the other way around which he did.
Clever little details like this is why I love Pirates of the Caribbean 😂😍
so basically that guy said parley cant deny he didnt know parley because he said it.
@@crazyku5548 More like:
Jack: parley, yes or no?
Pirate: no, obviously
VS.
Pirate: parley, yes or no?
Jack: yes, of course since you asked
Or he's drunk
@@crazyku5548
Probly not. He could always just be shot.
@@Sh4dowbanned or acting it to subvert the fact that he’s very intelligent
He didn't forget , he just wanted them to say the word parley instead of himself
Parlay
@@beef2504 wrong, the person who initiated parlay can be denied of its request as per traditional pirating law set by the legendary pirate code by Bartholomew, in this case jack sparrow accepting their request of parlay

And after a few Pirates movies he says "I love the french" when he hears about the guillotine
And corsets lol
As well he would, considering he married one.
Guillotine was actually an english invention I believe. The French just employed it to great effect.
@@batt3ryac1d There were alot of prototypes all over Europe with Germany believed to be the first actual Guillotine but a French Surgeon Antoine Louis built the recognised ones that would go on to take part during the French Revolution
That's called character development.

I miss when jack was a genius that pretended to be stupid and wasn’t just an idiot that improvised. The first 3 movies will never be matched.
Yet, they MAY be surpassed! Genius JD.
@Catherine Merrill they could, but they haven't
Jack has anti-social disorder
Awwww, don't go there and call him an idiot. That is a gross misrepresentation. Or: Objection! Hearsay!
... what are you talking about? He was always an idiot who improvised. A genius, regardless.
I love how Jack was like "wait I'm still alive?! I guess I better leave"
I'm honestly surprised he's surprised. Captain Jack Sparrow is the luckiest movie character of all time
Honestly no one talks about that
“Am I not? Oh.”
Literally me every morning🥴
Owwn, he is so depressive boy 🥺🥺
That's me ,when someone say I will I live u. I'm like I'm not already 😂.
Of course the french would invent surrendering lmao
"Parlay" in french translates to "talk" and english speakers love to take other languages words and adapt for our own speaking. So who really invented parlay as a term for surrender?
@@alexanderolson4990 thats just surrendering with extra steps. & english is not my Mother tongue
@@caioaugusto3138 twas more of a royal "our" because english is dumb like that. And what most likely happened was the english adapted it as a form of surrender after learning its literal translation

This first movie is the greatest of all in the trilogy. I remember laughing and coughing till me in tears in the cinema. Parley LOL. Oh wonderful times.

I love how Jack simultaneously doesn’t remember the word but also knows its origin 💀
He knows the word. He was tricking them into saying it, because if they mention "parley", they now asked Jack to accept or deny the request to parley.

This helped so much with French !!! Thank you Jack Sparrow!!
Superb acting.. Incomparable. JOHNNY DEPP. Parley... He forgot letting the pirates say for themselves. It is a Yes or No.. The best.
Such a great actor and so hot! I love his style when he’s not acting.♥️

Parleyyy....☠️ You sir always my childhood captain Sparrow. ...🤎
You can see the moment his brain goes from a solid block of cheddar cheese, to melted butter
One of my favourite scenes from that one. Jack is either always flying by his wits or by the seat of his pantaloons.
To be fair parley just translates to “to speak” so I’m guessing the french just wanted to talk
Parley in french is a "Pourparlers", it's a word to negociate, to talk for an agreement we fench people no longer use this word since a lots of time 😅
@@KpopShadow just like the french to give up on something.
@@omnigar9611 like what ?
Parley has nothing to do with surrender, it means to negotiate before battle, while it can be used for negotiating surrender, it's more often used to negotiate possible peaceful resolve. Like a last ditch effort of diplomacy
This gives just same vibes like

That's the one! Parley!

"PAR LAY? Damn to the depths whatever muttonhead thought up par lay." I keep watching it just to watch Pintel say that. He was wanting Jack to really get the business. LOL. And the way he said, " parley."
He is just so damn cute
Jack knows his old crew mate duo would take bait.😅
I love how he tricked them into a Parley
My man pintel was having a real bad day
I like the variations he has to say to get the pirates to say the word parley

If you can't convince them confuse them
The way he looks at the guy who said "parley" like "why would you say that you idiot?"
Parley came in clutch

I didn't realise for so long that he pretended not to know the word to get them to say it so he could accept the request of parlay.

Parley is a word that was actually used in the movie The Warriors. Yes, that movie.

It is so perfect.... 😂😂😂
Parler (same pronunciation as Parley) is French for "to talk"
to negotiate, which is basically surrender with extra steps lol

The fact he says at the end there that would be the French is cheeky lol

He is soooooo AWESOME!!!
Did anyone else realize that by putting his base into the mountain like he is, Grian doesn't have to build the back?
That eyebrow raise though 😂
Yep, that was us, parley (parler) is definitely coming from the french and it's too damn useful to not be used but don't thank us, we're humble like that.
they both were amazing duo
He forgot his line but because this was adlibbed, it checks out
Those two are actually my favorite POTC characters
Parler “to speak” -> Parlay
M’aider “help me” -> Mayday
Captain Jack is so dang smart in this 🤣 the art of ‘acting stupid’ to fool the people to forget your smart
Thats why the first pirates movie will never be topped. Jack was not stupid, he was a bit extra but he was extremely intelligent. He knew exactly how to handle any situation he fell into. The later movies made him dumber and more "lucky"

“pOolOLalEh” - Captain Jack Sparrow
My depression and me when I survive every damn suicide attempt I do:
Parley is a french word, meaning to talk. But the act of Parley, is actually British in origin, though similar traditions are as old as empires. In English, Parley basically means a temporary truce. Historically used to discuss prisoner exchanges and garuntee legal rights of prisoners and such. As well as to deliver messages.
One of the most “bugs bunny” moments in Jack Sparrow/johnny depps career 😂
"That would be the friench. Latin based of course. Inventors of mayonnaise."
"I like mayonnaise."

I love this scene 😍

Parsley 😂
Loved these. Movies
Jack Sparrow: par-par-ly
The pirates: the fuck?
Parley is indeed a word from French, Pourparler which means For Talk (literally translated).
And no, it's not a word for surrender but for starting a diplomatic discussion before a battle, to seek another outcome, especially when only one of the two camps really wants to fight, we try to convince them. A diplomacy can always help.
But it is true that "Captain" Jack Sparrow uses it more often when he feels in danger.
