Duran Duran at Red Rocks Roger Taylor Stops Playing Suddenly!

  • On 8/28/2023 Duran were performing their cover of "White Lines" by Grand Master Flash.
Roger Taylor, the drummer, stops the song due to technical difficulties and returns about a minute and a half later and starts the song over.
Simon Le Bon is genuinely confused and trying to make the best of it lol.

Here's a bit of knowledge for those that aren't musicians. Since the Rio days in 1982, Roger has worn headphones in concert. These days, he and the rest of the band use earbuds aka in-ear monitors. Roger's ears hear a click that holds a tempo on some songs. Rio and Save A Prayer are songs that he used to use a click to keep tempo precise as a loud stage can make it hard to hear the keyboards and guitars clearly. In fact, if you listen close to the MTV 1982/83 New Years Eve performance, the mix engineer mistakenly put the click through the main audience speakers instead of only routing it to Roger's headphones.
Fast forward to today, the band uses in-ear monitors. It keeps the stage volume at low levels so you don't have speakers blasting on stage. Keyboards don't have amps and speakers built in, so Nick's keyboards are heard by the band in their ear monitors. Dom's guitar rig is basically a computer - it's not a traditional guitar amplifier. It's a Kemper amp "modeler" that digitally creates the sound of a guitar amp and effects. This is also heard by the band, in their ears, and not by large stacks of guitar amp speakers. This is all done to eliminate the volume on stage thereby reducing ear fatigue, hearing loss, and helps control feedback and uncontrolled volumes of any given instrument.
But when things are too loud or not loud enough or mixed poorly in the ear monitor mix, a band member can't play properly. This is what appeared to happen to Roger. He points to his ears and it is possible he couldn't hear the band or maybe his mix was lacking guitar or vocals and he couldn't hear where he was in the song. In- Ear monitor earbuds wear out and maybe his were blown and all he heard was distortion. So maybe they had to replace Roger's earbuds. To keep the cable out of his way, the cable is usually feed down the back of his shirt and the wireless receiver is attached to his belt. So he had to leave the stage to get his earbuds replaced if that was the issue.

Perfect explanation. I would also like to point out that as an arena band you HAVE to play to a click, simply so that you stay perfectly synced with the lights and screen show. And for non-musicians: playing live to a click is actually harder than without, weirdly enough. It’s not “cheating”

My hubby, who is a musician/drummer stated the problem maybe was his headset. No one fixed the drums & he had extra drum sticks. FYI our last name is Rush & it is his favorite band, especially being a drummer, yet he Loved Duran Duran. RUSH is a musician’s band, but appeals to everyone.

I never could stand them. Neither can my wife. In fact the only people I know who like rush are drummers. Even with my friends who are drummers, their wives don't like them. So, no. They don't appeal to everyone.
I met Neil Peart once. It was at a bar I went to for lunch. I didn't know it was him. The owner of the bar was talking to him and turns to me and asks me if I liked rush. I told him my drummer friends love them, and Neil smiled. Then I said I couldn't stand them. He ended up getting disgruntled and leaving. So I once pissed off Neil Peart. Oh well.

My wife? She loves them. Smart woman…….and has great taste in music.

This is AMAZING because with all of todays technology shit still happens, even to DD2. Obviously Roger couldnt hear a damn thing, and being an ACTUAL musician they couldnt just fake it though a song and let the backing track do the job for them. This doesnt happen very often, needless to say, cuz poor Simon really has nothing prepared LOL!! After seeing these guyz play live countless times, its kinda fun to see him nervous for a change; the polished rock star persona flaked off a bit showing the actual human being underneath❤❤❤❤❤

I was there when Duran Duran was playing in Minneapolis in 1988 and suddenly a fountain of sparks began shooting from the back of one of Nick's keyboards, and I was whoops, that's not intentional, but they just kept going, if Roger couldn't hear through his headphones, you gotta stop! I have seen many shows, worked many shows, seen performers fall off the stage into an orchestra pit, seen heavy can lights fall from the rigging, good grief last year a poor dancer in China had a huge projection monitor fall right on his head. This is nothing.

  • @Funky_Ghost
    @Funky_Ghost Před 9 měsíci +14

Such crap posted . . . Roger has used in ear ( and over ear! ) devices from the very beginning. He is particular about what his monitors give him. Having one not function in a live environment, with technical timing necessary in Duran's music, it would be near impossible. They are all very accomplished musicians and would be among the least likely of their genre to resort to "faking" it. Any live show comes with the fear of equipment failure. I've had it happen myself with an amp head going south. Switched to my combi amp, played on. But it sucked for me. . .

Every member of the band has their own mix they can hear in their in ear monitors. In the old days you had these massive monitors facing the band so they could hear what they were playing. However, now they have in ears with a special mix only they can hear. John Taylor will have a louder mix of the hi hat and overall drums so he can play in time better. Simon will have his voice a little louder so that he can hear himself sing. In fact, Simon will be the one that benefits most from inear monitors because in the old days if he wanted to hear what he was singing, he would have had to yell which is straining on the voice. If you want to test this, next time you are in a loud environment or concert and someone wants to talk to you, put your finger in your ear and you will be able to hear what they are saying. Anyhoo, if one of Roger's inears fails or the mix doesn't come through and maybe all he hears is part of an occasional keyboard riff he will need to stop to fix it.

so the music is recorded not live?

@@briancebu7209 No, the music is live. But most of Nick's sounds will be triggered. So for example, the way they got the start of Rio was by throwing drum sticks into an open piano off the strings and then reversing the way the tape played. There is no way you can replicate that live. So they will have that sampled. Another sample will be the girl laughing in Hungry Like the Wolf. Well, these samples are all lined up along a click track so that they come in at the correct times. Roger needs to be able to hear that click so that he is playing on time. If he can't hear it then you are going to hear odd keyboard noises coming in at inappropriate times. NIck only has 2 hands, but being the greatest synth player alive he has who knows how many sounds that all need playing at varying points throughout a song. He can't play these sounds while he is playing a piano part. Simon had the same problem last month. He forgot his in ear monitors and consequently had no idea when to sing. In the old days, they used to have these big triangle shaped speakers at the front of the concert facing the band so that they could hear what they are doing. The problem with that is it destroys the singer's voice and he can't hear anything. Today, every band uses in ear monitors because they can get special mixes sent to themselves. Roger needs the click coming from the keyboards. John needs a special mix that might have the hi hats a little louder to help him keep time. Simon needs to hear what he is singing so he will probably have a mix just for him where the instruments are a lot lower. This allows him to sing with more feeling because he is no screaming to be heard. The very fact that Roger stopped the song shows that they are playing live and not to a recording. Now go watch Cardi B throwing her mic into the crowd after someone threw a drink at her. The mic has gone yet her singing is still playing. That is recorded. Duran are very much a live band. After all, they've been playing these songs for 40 years

"Improv" is the shortened version of "improvisation", not "improve" which is a completely different word - as in, you need to improve your spelling skills before dissing the improv skills of others. However, if for whatever reason, that would be difficult or impossible (maybe you're dyslexic) then maybe just lay off dissing improv skills.
