Turhan may fight and put Kosem down, but before Kosem's era began, she continuously fought against the traitors, including the great Safiye Sultan. She lacked experience in the beginning, but she learned and that is shown very clearly in her intelligent letters to the state. During her reign, the Ottoman Empire saw prosperity, peace, and balance which had been destroyed during Kosem's reign. She transferred the power to the vizier mostly because she didn't want to be involved in politics anymore. Kosem, on the other hand, did so many mistakes as regent (such as mismanaging the rebellions in Anatolia which caused territorial loss, deficit in the imperial treasury, unhandled corruption and so on) that her son Murad had to remove her and later in in her grandson's reign, the pashas had to remove her once again. Kosem had power, but she was not a very capable regent. Also, Kosem did have to share her authority with others, she couldn't have that power without a male Sultan for example.

Also they only supported her to kill Kosem only because, they knew that they could force her to let go of her power.
It is also known she build the mosque to be buried there. Just like they did in several other cultures like China and Egypt.

      @signora1102 Před 11 měsíci

@@chrissturkenboom6080Actually no. Even though Turhan transferred great power to Korpullu she was still very much active in politics. She would give order to statesmen. Even Korpullu needed her agreement on many important decisions. She would patrol around the empire and was respected as a padişah herself. And was even presented as such.
There are a lot of misinformations about Turhan. But trust me She wasn't inexperienced or forced in any way. And in my opinion it was a very smart move of her. When you are the backbone, you have way more control of game. Was she even a backbone at this point?

@@eurech The others are not but Gulnus Sultan is the last member of Sultanate of Women.
Most Turkish historians include her as the last member of SOW.
She was similar as her predecessors(mostly Safiye, Hurrem and Kosem).
She was politically active both as Haseki Sultan of Mehmed IV(she and Turhan get along well) and Valide Sultan during the reign of her sons(she also coresponded with foreign monarch, built complex and etc).
During the reign of her first son Mustafa II, she had unlimited influence and indirectly overruled her son and her son allowed her(like Safiye with Mehmed III),which also caused to dislike her and rebelion in which Mustafa II was dethroned.
The rebels wanted to enthrone 10 year Sehzade Ibrahim(son of Ahmed II, grandson of Muazzez Sultan),but the oulema rejected that due to the age of Sehzade Ibrahim. So in the end they agree her other son to asended the throne and Gulnus was exiled for short time in Old Palace, but she learnt all her mistakes and when she returned after some time, she didn't act as she did previously.
For years it was said that Turhan Sultan is the last member, but actually it's Gulnus and SOW ended in 1715 with her death.

Hurrem and Kosem are still shouting and mad at her until now in Heaven. 😂

    My opinion:
Turhan Sultan - the most powerful female regent
Safiye Sultan - the most powerful Valide sultan
Hurrem Sultan - the most powerful Haseki Sultan
REGENT CHOICE; The only reason I am putting Turhan above Kosem is because Turhan is better documented (According to historican Leslie Peirce, Kosem is the least documented Sultana in the Sultanate of Women age), and the stability and prosperity of her government, compared to the fragile and corrupt government of Kosem, indicates that she had more authority. I am excluding the Koprulu reign and taking in account the Turhan reign only. The empire became even more powerful during the Vizier's reign.
VALIDE SULTAN CHOICE: Safiye had near-absolute authority and influence over her son and government, so much that three rebellions designated against her authority occurred, one which killed some of her most trusted allies. Yet again Leslie Peirce points out that if you remove Kosem and Turhan Sultan's regencies, their status as Valide Sultan is much inferior to that of Safiye Sultan, mainly because Kosem and Turhan were 'average' Valide Sultans once their regencies ended, while Safiye's power as Valide was so endless that it caused so much controversy, even after her reign had ended.
HASEKI SULTAN CHOICE: Hurrem's ultimate power took place under her husband's reign, a power which no other sultana had during their husband's reigns. I could go on and explain a lot about her works because we have a lot of records about Hurrem both from domestic and foreign sources. But one very clear source that helps us understand how she was above her fellow Haseki Sultans is her salary. If you know anything about the Ottoman hierarchy, you know the salaries were the best representation of that. Hurrem's status as Haseki Sultan allowed her 2,000 aspers, which was the equal amount powerful Valide Sultans had (such as Nurbanu Sultan). In comparison, others such as Nurbanu, Safiye, Kosem, and Turhan recieved only 1,000 aspers during their Haseki Sultan tenures. This is a clear indication of her superiority to the other Hasekis, but also one should pay attention at the fact that as Haseki, she had the salary of some powerful Valide Sultans.

most powerful regent? she was regent for 5 years then handed over her power to the grand vizier due to her lack of inexperience in the court and politics

Actually the least documented Valide Sultan is Halime, even her name was lost for centuries untill it was found recently.
About regents,Handan and Halime althought were unoffical(de facto) regents for certain period(Handan was until Ahmed's son Mehmed was born)and they shared their duties with Mustafa Efendi(Handan)and Haci Aga(Halime during the first reign of Mustafa)and Kara Davud Pasa(during second reign of Mustafa)were pretty much good regents like Turhan even Kosem was also good regent(although unoffical) for 4 years of Ibrahim.
Yes she had some mistakes made in Murad's and Mehmed's reign, but she was more powerful as regent imo than Turhan because she was 3 times regent(2 official and 1 unoffical).
And the ulema had faith in her,as they had asked her to be regent to her grandson and to teach Turhan and Mehmed,as they believed she was more experienced than Turhan who was overviewed also for her young age,but Kosem thinked otherwise and it led to her execution in the end.
But of course everyone can have their opinion.
About who was the most powerful Valide Sultan,it's not easy but Safiye,Kosem and Turhan are definitely considered to be the most influential and powerful Valide Sultanas mostly Safiye and Turhan as they were co ruling with their sons, something which Kosem couldn't achieved as Murad put boundaries on her influence, but that doesn't mean she was completely powerless(Murad just wanted to have image of strong padishah) and as Ibrahim had banished her from Topkapi and from politics too.
Personally I believe that Turhan was more influential because according to new studies, she didn't completely withdraw from politics after transforming her authority to Koprolu, she was just not public political figure but her son completely was depended on her in ruling, and when he left for his hunting expeditions with his haseki and children, mostly it was reported that Turhan was ruling in Istanbul with the pasas, althought she sometimes jointed him.
So she wasn't just average Valide.
Also Turhan had longer tenure(actually the longest) and she was very loved by people, she also had enemies in the divan who hated her for having such big influence on her son,but she knew how to handle them.
When she died, people had stated that strongest pilar of the empire had died.
Safiye was not hated because she was just powerful and influential, while that is one of the reasons yes,she was hated because she and her supporters were very very corrupted to the point that they even used the payment of soldiers for their own needs, also the lack and refuse of charity and her persona.
She also opressed everyone in the harem, didn't let her son to have Haseki and she had literally forced her own son to kill his son.
Although her son was fool, but still the execution of Sehzade Mahmud was not needed that much,as Mehmed himself had also spoken against his father and grandmother and had janissary support,Nurbanu did everything to protect him, while Safiye along with Handan were plotting against Halime and Mahmud and in the end it was her who demanded his execution.
In fact she had put bad name in Valide Sultan title. And even when Handan and Ahmed sent her in Old Palce she had ordered her servants to broke the harem and the apartments of Valide Sultan.
But that doesn't make her the most evil sultana in the end, because her duty as Valide Sultan was to protect the sultanate of her son,and she chose another way to deal with not like Nurbanu maintaining peace.
Yes about haseki sultanas Hurrem was definitely the most influential haseki.
