- For this edition of Rhythm Roulette, Mass Appeal linked up with Salaam Remi.
Getting his first taste of studio work with Kurtis Blowe, Salaam Remi was destined to work with some of the greats like Nas, Amy Winehouse, Fugees (The Score), Ini Kamoze ("Here Comes The Hotstepper"), Jurassic 5, and more. He's also worked on soundtracks for films like Office Space, Zoolander, The Departed, and Blood Diamond. He's most recently been working with Bodega Bamz, Joell Ortiz, and Nitty Scott as No Panty.
After hitting up A-1 Records, Salaam ends up with George Faith's Soulful, Danny La Rue in London, and The Who's Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy. Putting his faith in George Faith, he finds the backbone of his beat and then pulls some samples from the others. Joell Ortiz also makes a short cameo to comment on the work-in-progress beat. Watch the full creation process above.

I got some mad nostalgia hearing that intro beat.
Dillaville I thought that was a Dilla beat lol can't remember where I heard it. What's the name of it?
God's son
G-g-get down
The boss James brown
Salaam looks like he's in his 20s still... the man is 44! Damn.
Black don't crack.
what?
😂😂😂😂
I damn near knocked over my family to watch this episode.
hahaha
🤣🤣🤣🤣
i love reading the comments.. ppl forget the x factor in these episodes. u have to pick 3 records blindfolded! these cats have to work with what they are given. everyone always quick to critique the beat critique the craftsmanship! if ur not learning anything from watching this series ur not producing. jus my two cents. i enjoyed this rr too.
Sha Dot my man.
did he get weak records? no. did he made weak beat? yes.
Sha Dot truth be told I doubt most of these people even make beats... just make opinions.
and even if u think he got good samples maybe he didn't feel the same everyone's ear is different as well
Word! I watch these to learn new things about production so i can adapt my own style of production.Mostly everyone is here for the beat, but some of us are here for the artistry that goes with makin these dope beats.
I respect his skills to the fullest but this beat is a throwaway
^ savage lmao
99% of the beats on here are throwaway...dudes aint choosing to make the beat its a challenge. You gotta be some kind of hero to make a album ready track from random records in one session
Yeah but Black Milk and Marco Polo (among others) had WAY worse records than this to work with and still made beats that could be on an album for sure.
Nas is my favorite MC but sometimes his beat selections are like... wtf were you thinkin my dude
Iono it's not too great but I feel like this is mixtape material. Like it won't be the greatest but it definitely does the job.
Sick. This is what it's about. Used the records. Not tons of synth shit over a bad loop. No jacking from the funk section. Creative sampling. Good stuff.
He's in my top 5 but, if I had made this beat, I'd have turned off the MPC without saving.
Nashid77 😂😂😂
Lmao.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
lmao!!
Haha
can somebody please get Pete rock
that would be legendary
that'd be dope!
the series would be shut down
I'M ON IT!
I will need two sherpas, a pack mule, and 1000 pounds of marmalade for bribery purposes.
i really wanted to hear joell on that
Been to his crib before when he lived in Manhattan. Dude had so much equipment it was SICKENING!!! UGGGGHHH. MY dude and brother from another mother BK took me over his crib...
4:08 Mfw he didn't go right to the soul section and instead kinda walked the store, blindfolded. _New Arrivals_ delivered. So does this episode.
Also #studiogoals
Mad respect for anyone that doesn't take the easy way.
This dude's given us classics from The Fugees - Nappy Heads [Remix] to Nas' God's Son album, which is my favorite Nas album after Illmatic. His end result was a decent beat, but nothing mind blowing. Respect.
?????….dam after illmatic i thought everyone would agree that still was his best
That guitar sample was sounding kinda fire though
This is what it is. So many youngstas have never touched the vinyl and hardware. Remove the studio setting and insert a basement and this is the 90s and 00s for countless hip hop heads. Nice
Don't forget he also worked with Amy Winehouse
If your not aware of Salaam Remi go peep Bush Babees - Remember We - (Salaam Remi Remix)
MC Shinobi word that was a dope remix too
Buckshot Lefonque - No Pain No Gain
god damn i forgot about that song, thank you
The ziggy tribe album as well
he looked like he was in timeout when he was at the mpc
💀
All three records..barely add anything else to it...and come out with fire....Well done Salaam!!
Those 🥁 are outrageous
salaam remi the great!!!Always enjoy seeing him in the studio. Nas,Amy, and salam remi would've made an epic album together.
this beat was fire
wow...the arrogance & entitlement of some of you dudes making comments, especially when it comes to having the PRIVILEGE of watching some of our PIONEERS work ON THE FLY...there SHOULD be some level of appreciation of that, not "he sounds like a newbie" or holding your nose up! How about you say nothing and keep your litter to yourself...
people be trippin bro...you dont even know...any way shout out to Salaam he did his thing
Sorry for having an opinion.. the beat was a throwaway.. period. Most of us still got love for what he brought to the game, but this beat = garbage.
Heat!
Humble guy!
Thank U Mass Appeal!!!....between Nas,Fugees,Amy Winehouse.....Dis cat iz Awesome!.....imma steal dat C-low part Joell!!!..lol
This guy has to be your favorite producer. Talent of Marketing all day. #TrumpacIsBack
Raymundo Figueroa trumpacisback?
One of the most underrated producers in the game.....beat was so dope it was causing lightning at 2:31...wait a minute WTF!?
Why is hip hop so full of trolls? Been following Rhythm Roulette and there's not a single producer not getting flak from some "Mr. Nobody" that prolly can sell a beat to the neighborhood high school rapper. Is it just a culture of badly brought up kids that can't respect leaders and elders?
Just a bunch of lames who make trap beats and take pictures crouching in the middle of the street wearing a supreme t shirt that refer to themselves as "Wavy"
Nah man its just humanity. Envy
my eyes just about popped out of my head. Salaam Remi is behind quite a few songs that changed me life.
I thought for sure he was going to use the bit starting at 1:18
i thought for sure 1.21
Nah, that song's too famous to sample, it would've been kind of cheesy
Mario Sanchez It's all in how you flip it.. Most songs have been flipped numerous times already.
was expecting way more from this great producer
Can’t really blame this guy, he picked 3 records randomly, these kind of things, you just gotta get lucky.
One of the better Roulettes. Very nice, wish this track was on an album.
happy thanksgiving to us man... #excited
The beat might not sound anything special to your average ear, but to the real hip hop fan, they know this beat would be fire with someone spitting over it
Finally someone who actually cut on the main board/screen....usually consoles are used as laptop rests or just basic backdrops for the video. Thank you for showing that there are producers who ACTUALLY have some knowledge of the equipment they're around (unless Mass Appeal just always edit those scenes out). I guess having equipment around you gives you "street cred" as a producer lmao
He real for rapping on the beat to see how it flows, didn't know other people do that too
after ortiz gets on it you will think differently about the beat and he ready too.
We need Easy Mo Bee !!!
Yessssss
YES WE DO
can we have DJ Shadow?
Salaam is a legend. This sounds like a terrible beat Nas would use
A. Rashad lmfaoo.
A. Rashad lol word. Nas prolly salivating over this beat
facts lol
A. Rashad this is one of those beats that I would listen to while I'm on the train somewhere in New York
but ... Nas would murder that ugly beat . meanwhile other rappers let the beat be better than THEM
I just took a break from my 4000 and just went to CZcams for some inspiration when all of a sudden THIS POPS UP ON MY FEED! EVERYTHING else was on pause for the next 7 minutes and 7 seconds.
love it! very dope! he can give a soul to a rock! nice
That dude make a lot of my favourite songs;
Buckshot lefonque - no pain no gain salaam remi (best ever for me, fallowed by i used to love her of commn and mass appeal of gang starr)
da bush babies - remember we
black sheep - without a doubt
fugees - nappy heads
...
I think Salaam Remi and Easy Mo Be are so underrated !!!
"That gate was put up to keep crime out or keep are ass in.." (Beat Drops with the "ooooooooh" in the background) That shit was dope!!!
Dre Drums his Ceelo impression was on point
Peace 7 Salaam did this the right way,and it was ready for Joell on da spot
I sincerely hope him and Nas do a whole album together...Salaam is one of the few producers that can perfectly capture Nas' vibe on record and not sound the same
I was a little disappointed, he skipped a few gems from what I heard.
Tony L Brown he gotta keep the suuuper heaters for dolo lol not for you tube! I heard it too!
This beat is tuff. I'd love to hear Joell's finished track over this. I could also hear Common or somebody like Pusha T destroying this.
Wow! Really a HAPPY Thanksgiving now!!
So when is mass appeal going to put out a record with all the tracks for the rhythm roulette series out on the market?
scadu123 I wish. Clearing samples would be hell for that.
They're mostly all trash tbh
That studio is goals
I have never clicked a link so quickly as I have with this.
One of the best episodes yet!
so understated
Mass Appeal always come through for us on the holidays!
Really dope episode. He killed it!!
Easily one of the greatest producers of all time.
Great idea sampling the double kick like that! Definitely going to use!
Well done sir!
Really y'all gon do Remi like that? Why the beat only ride for 15 seconds at the end???
Tony Subryan because it's junk
really basic and nothing to it...
Tony Subryan this beat needs a biggie flow
So good
Great Job!
This one was good! thanks Mass Appeal
Sick!
Fools in this thread that don't realise that's the best that'll sit on Salaams HDD for 2 years, get remembered, then worked on again and probably turned into a masterpiece. Anyone that's spent time in the loop will also tell us that vocals fill up the empty space in a track and turn a repetitive loop into something interesting.
Legend
I'm glad that for once, they walked around and didn't pick stuff from the same section.
Oh My!!
This gotta be the livest one.
I'm excited like a groupy.
Dope!
GAWT DAMN! This was fire.
Fire!
It was an honour towatch this man work.
Thanks
Man he shot this one! Good stuff I don't usually watch RR anymore after the Sprite Fiasco but Glad I seen this one, he is a good producer...
One of the greatest to ever do it!
Dang, Salaam is one of my favorite producers. I was expecting a lot more from him.

Ay Yo.... this the best series on CZcams 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
Dope
dopeeee
Good episode! I would love to see people get more unconventional with this stuff. Like sample a death metal record or a country record or something. I always thought gotye did a good job with unconventional samples on his "like drawing blood" album.
soundcloud.com/g-rock-steady/headbanger-boogie
I'm still learning to walk, but I've come up with a lil something from a metal sample. It's old enough I doubt folks will recognize the sample, but it should be enough to force a head nod or two.
Dustin Clark check out charlie heats rr he sampled some like surf rock music lol
WOOOOOO!!!!
quero essa musica do começo do video aonde eu acho
yes! lawd
the record didn't let him down!
Old school fire
you can tell he knew this was a throwaway right when he started the pattern
so witch rhythm roulette is the best??? who yall got?
Salaam Remi!!!!!!!
my fire alarm went off while watching this video i ran down stairs to check the stove but there was no smoke in the kitchen. I have no idea of what triggered the alarm.
Hell yes! Salaam is super slept on
Dj Abilities would be dope.
