  • The Holy Eucharist: Rite II on The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost, July 7, 2024 at 11 a.m., at Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Rev. Bonnie-Marie Yager-Wiggan, Associate Rector, was the preacher. Assisting: The Reverend Jonathon W. Jensen, Rector, The Reverend Geoffrey S. Royce, Deacon, Alan Lewis, Director of Music, Jon Tyillian, Assistant Organist.
Musical Notes: John Knowles Paine (1839-1906) was born in Maine to a musical instrument-builder, who built one of the first church organs in that state. He was trained by a German musician who had settled in Portland in 1849, and then pursued study in Berlin with a German virtuoso who was an early proponent of the organ music of Bach, by then long-neglected and on the brink of rediscovery. On his return to America, he settled in Boston, and became the Organist of the Old West Church near the bottom of Beacon Hill. He also served as the organist of Appleton Chapel on the campus of Harvard University, a base from which he began to lecture on music to the university community; by 1875, Harvard created the first American full-professorship in music. In 1896, he was among the founders of the American Guild of Organists. His Prelude in D-flat is a brief but lovely lyrical piece.
