We'd like to thank Nathan Cheever, the lead mission designer on Six Days in Fallujah, for assisting and advising us on this project. If you'd like to find out more about the game, he has a page dedicated to it here: www.curiousconstructs.com/game...
After the release of the critically-acclaimed first-person shooter Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the video game market was perpetually flooded with war-themed games for a decade. Open-world levels and exotic weapons commonly seen in the likes of iconic shooters from the nineties - these including DOOM, Quake, and Duke Nukem 3D - were dropped in favor of linear levels and realistic weaponry. Game plots were no longer mere backdrops for the action, and a large cast of characters would be integral to what’s going on. The days of macho, muscle-bound, one-man-army protagonists was over.
While most modern military shooters were works of fiction loosely based on contemporary events, Six Days in Fallujah, a third-person tactical shooter developed by Atomic Games, was intended to be a virtual depiction of the Iraq War’s Second Battle of Fallujah of late-2004. This was a joint-offensive comprised of US, British, and Iraqi fighters. After the first battle in April, which took place after a small private security team were killed by Iraqi insurgents, it was discovered that that an estimated 3,000 members of this militia had set up their operations within the city of 250,000 people. An emergency evacuation allowed the Coalition to fight without fear of any civilians being caught in the crossfire.
Collectively, over 100 Coalition fighters were killed and 1,000 injured. According to the Red Cross, around 800 civilians also lost their lives during the conflict. Much of the city was left in ruins from the battle, leaving many men and women homeless as a result. In summary, to call it a sweeping victory for the Coalition would be painfully inaccurate.
Due to the critical backlash from the mainstream press, anti-war groups and the like, Six Days in Fallujah has remained unreleased to this very day, and soon enough, this ambitious shooter was forgotten about by practically everyone… that is, until now.

The public wants our servicemen to be known as quivering PTSD people who regret their service. The reality is that many enjoy what they do because the service is honorable and does make a difference, despite MSM propaganda. Warfare is tragic, but to thrive in it you have to be able to learn how to appreciate it's finer points, not be adverse to it. And as tragic as war is, there is nothing worse than surrendering without a fight. Most notable situation of that was known as the holocaust.

The game looks like it would be an amazing ride, but we'll likely never see it released. I don't ever pay for singleplayer games, but if they were to say, remaster on the latest unreal or similar equivalent, I could see myself dropping 30$ on it.

I don’t know if you played it, but I recently played Modern Wafare ‘19 campaign and I thought it was whatever, until I found myself learning about real life military operations and it made me appreciate the shit out of that campaign. It’s almost as if infinity ward researched military ops, and put them into the game. For example we were fighting with Al Queda, in the game your fighting Al Qatala. In the game the country doesn’t know their government is fighting their ally’s like Russia, in real life a Navy SEAL mentioned that nobody believes we’ve been fighting Russia under the radar. Now for me if they depict the realilty of the situation i have no problem with this. But it has been stated by the creators that they will not be dwelling over the war crimes that have occured in Fallujah. This is literally wiping the surface clean and rewriting history.

As someone who was there, in Fallujah, Nov 2004, I have mixed emotions about this. Granted, this video is now a few years old and today was the first time I have ever heard of this game.
I have mixed emotions because watching this, the 'real' footage of Fallujah, I started to get a bit apprehensive. But I would still buy the game and play it, so long as it was/is accurate enough. That was my problem with titles like Call of Duty or Battlefield, they just were not accurate enough, and why I stopped playing. Hearing what sounded like an 8yr old kid talking smack on a game that I should dominate at given my background.
I do love to concept of educating people though video games. This is not a new concept, one of CoD's focuses was to educate on WW2 with their first release.
When I was in Fallujah, with my Marines, we joked about how someday, someone would make a video game like CoD only about us and what we did "here." We also said there would be blockbuster semi-accurate movies about us. And that by 2020 (today) there would be a Disney World where we were standing just outside the city. One of these came true, and sadly, the media stopped it.

I worked as a QA tester for Destineer games and tested Breach along with several of their other games. I remember being told that most of the maps and assets in the game came directly from Six Days In Fallujah.
One story that sticks in my mind is that I was messing around and discovered that reloading before completely emptying your magazine seemed to cause later reloads to give you incomplete amounts of ammo, e.g. you would wind up with only 21 in your 30 round magazine. I messed with it for a bit and wrote up a bug on it. To my surprise I was told that this was intentional, and found that the game actually kept track of the amount of spent bullets per magazine, and since you only had two or three of them you would eventually cycle back to a magazine with only the bullets that you had not fired previously left in it.
Also the focus of the game seemed to be on the destruction mechanics but they were very poorly realized. There were maybe one or two spots per map where you could plant explosives to break open a wall or destroy a bridge, but they were very easy to reach and would typically be done very early into a match, to the point where they might as well have started that way because it took zero effort to do. The most effective use of the mechanic as found by us testing was to shoot out a single brick of one of the buildings and use it as a sniper peephole.

Oddly enough, the early WWII-based Call of Duty games, for example 'Call of Duty 2' and 'World at War' were not the power fantasies of later instalments, such as 'Advanced Warfare' and 'Black Ops III'. They sought to depict a chaotic war zone and position the player as an ordinary soldier - not as an OP hero.

I think the problem is that the ones who are protesting aren't gamers, themselves. They think of games as mere entertainment, because the last game they played was Pacman, and let's face it: Pacman didn't offer up much in the immersion and emotion department. The technology just wasn't there yet, but today's games easily rivals both literature and cinema when it comes to emotional impact. There are countless games I have played that have made me completely drained emotionally after it's ended and made me question my world view. I think that this would be such a game. It had the possibility to make the players feel disgusted at the war and how it played out. I would like to know whether it would feel comfortable to have a book published, a movie or documentary made, or is it considered disrespectful to even talk about the battle of Fallujah? May it be taught in schools?

I like how the mother of the dead veteran appeared on the news with jewellry round her neck, earings and well made hair and yet does not even show any sense of remorse or even a small sense of restrain when talking about her deceased son.
I will state this, the news is a major pest when it comes to games that base themselves on recent historical events. I never heard the news bitching about how the Battlefield series is becoming a haven for young children that resort to petty insults against others, but they bitch about games that are there to educate people about the realities of war, that war is no place for glory.
