Great player I got married on 19th August 1978 at 9am( the day he made his debut for us v Orient) but managed to get to BDTBLfor the kick off to see him play unfortunately we lost 2-1 but always loved watching him play RIP ALEX UTB ⚔

It's an unfortunate fact that when Alex Sabella played for us he was just too good for us at that time. He was on a different level to the rest of the team, and it came as no surprise that he eventually moved to a higher profile club. On a different tack, in 2001 Man Utd signed Juan Sebastian Veron, an Argentinian, from Lazio for £28million. Apparently, Veron's favourite team outside of South America was Sheffield United, and that was because back in the late 70s/early 80s his uncle played for the Blades - one Pedro Verde.

Alex sabella ..how lucky us blades fans were to have Alex pull on those incredible United shirts of 78 /79 we even had the bonus of River plate coming to bramall lane just weeks after some of the river players had lifted the world cup ..throw in the fact that maradona had been in the mix gives anyone not familiar with the story an idea of what Harry haslam was all about ..most football fans have favourite players of all time it's always down to age I was 16 when Alex arrived so for me only the great Keith Edwards comes close to sabella we were so so lucky to have him for those two seasons

I watched a lot of Sabella. His strengths were up there with Maradona but unlike Maradona he had weaknesses. His strengths were brilliant individual skill with tricks and flicks, amazing pre match ball juggling too, quick feet and close ball control meant he was fouled all the time. His weaknesses were he was small and slow, however his body swerve and skill was so high that he was excellent at dribbling past several defenders (like in the Anglo Scottish match home to Dundee). Sabellas other weakness were he couldn’t tackle, low work rate, didn’t like the physical side and he struggled playing in cold/ rainy/ windy conditions on muddy pitches (which in 1980 was many games during the English Winter). So in some games, especially away from home he disappeared from games....did nothing...so it was like having 10 men. He’s still remembered as our most individually skilful player in 50 years (however for balance he had weaknesses too) .....Sabella was a luxury player who needed better players and workers around him...from 78 to 80 we had a team on the slide so we couldn’t take advantage of Sabellas fantastic memorable ability.
