  • In this tutorial you'll learn my process of creating beautiful, evenly spaced stripes in your murrini cane using specific stringer application techniques.
I'll walk you through my best tips and tricks for getting your stripes even which helps to maximize the amount of usable glass you get from your murrini cane gather.
    You'll learn...
    1. How to build a foundation for your stripes that serves as a guideline for initial stringer application.
    2. My technique of maintaining an even heat as you work so the stringer stripes don't get too cool and crack or pop off the gather.
    3. How to decide on the number of stripes for your final cane early in stripe application so you get the result you want in the final murrini chip when flattened on a bead.
    4. How to correct any uneven spacing between stripes as you work.
    5. You'll see how to make sure all stringer stripes are melted evenly into the base layer prior to the final pull of the gather.

What is Lampworking? It is the art of creating small glass beads (and other glass elements) by melting rods of colored glass in a flame, then winding that melted glass around a steel rod (mandrel), which creates the bead hole. After the artist is finished making the bead on the mandrel, and the glass hardens back to a solid state, It is placed into a pre-heated kiln to soak for a length of time which strengthens (anneals) the glass. After the annealing process in the kiln, and the glass is cool, it is removed from the steel mandrel and a bead has been created! After some cleaning, the bead is now ready to be used in any jewelry design.

Do you buy a lot of commercial stringer? What torch and source of O2 go you use?

I have a mini cc & oxycon - I buy commercial stringer occasionally, but it can sometimes be a bit too thick, so I'll just make my own as needed. :)
