I just discovered Youth Dew at age 47. Love it!
Tabu by Dana is a Oriental Floral fragrance for women. Tabu was launched in 1932. The nose behind this fragrance is Jean Carles. Top notes are Spices, Orange, Coriander, Neroli and Bergamot; middle notes are Cloves, Ylang-Ylang, Rose, Jasmine and Narcissus; base notes are Amber, Civet, Benzoin, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Musk, Oakmoss, Vetiver and Cedar. My sister in law wore this in the 60’s

That's funny that you thought the Obsession smelled masculine. We accidentally gave a mini bottle of women's OBSESSION to our teenage sons. And TABU is my favourite date night with my husband perfume. I love FIRE AND ICE! I remember CASHMIR being my gourmand 30 years ago before gourmand was really a thing. White Shoulders is so beautiful! The perfume is better than the cologne, and if you can get the vintage stuff, it's amazing! It's been cheapened down over the years, and that's a shame.
Youth Dew & White Shoulders will always remind me of my mother, who is 75. I love Youth Dew, but I just can't pull it off. Obsession is one of my favorite old school fragrances. Fun video!

That's ok, Kay. I really wasn't calling you cheap. I love vintage perfumes and wanted to say there are so many others that could not be included here. Hopefully, we'll check them out. Guerlain has several like Mitsouko, Le Bleu, Insolence, that go back to early 1900s. They're not expensive. I also like Houbigant from the 1960s. I apologize, Kay. That was very kind of you to send the samples. Maybe I should too, and I'll certainly watch my words online since they can be misconstrued. That's the last thing we need 😶right now.

Your reactions are so funny, girl. I think with most vintages, you need to let the juice sit for a whole. The mids and drydowns are usually where it's at. Anyway, thanks for your honesty. You need to try Giorgio by Giorgio Beverly Hills as well as Maroussia by Slava Zaitsev. For both of these, you NEED TO WAIT for the mid and drydown though. I'm waiting for Cinema by YSL in the mail and I'm excited. I had Obsession, Tabu and Youth Dew in my cart but removed them cos like you, I was afraid I'd be disappointed. 😁
Lololol sniff them first. Tabu if you can get it for affordable get it. Tabu kept changing for hours. Comes and goes... Deepest drydown smells like Goodwill store lol

Obsession was one I literally gagged at when I first smelled like our reactions were basically the same...and now I own a 3.3oz bottle and adore it. It does smell exactly like a wooden cabinet in a very old thrift store. It is punchy and masculine and kind of old smelling but now that I'm wearing it it makes me feel powerful in a weird way.

Yes obsession is strong, I love it ! Just finished a bottle. I kind of reminds me of a man cologne. Best way to describe it is a clean out of the shower soapy scent. Clean , if you like to smell clean buy obsession or Happy by Clinique

The easiest vintage I have tried is samsara edt. It’s one of my go to scents because it’s slightly like dove soap but slightly oriental. I enjoy it because it’s easy. Insolence has a vintage vibe about it too due to the powdery factor but it’s also modern from the sweet violets. But samsara doesn’t feel too modern, but creamy clean and organized as well as vintage. I use it for hospital setting because of its soapy feel.
Lol nice... Never smell samsara. The bottle is not attractive but I guess I'll give it a try 😉

I wore Tabu when I was in high school. Tabu was the favorite inexpensive perfume of teenage girls. When we wanted to be demure, we wore White Shoulders. In my twenties, I loved Stephen B, a Tabu type scent.

Vintage perfumes are very screechy at first spray, the magic happens in the dry down. It's jarring to put your nose close to fresh spray.

The dry down is so important with these fragrances. Also we all have very different preferences as we are all individuals! My ride or die vintage perfumes are tabu, obsession women and youth dew. I want to try more along that line but they aren’t for everyone ❤

I didn’t like Youth Dew when I smelt it at Macy’s but I do have the Opium EDT and I really like it in cold weather. I got Tabu as a Christmas gift from a kid I use to baby sit back in the day. I remember being excited to get a perfume and when I smelt it I was like wtf?! Lol. Terrible. But I haven’t smelt it since 2002. Maybe I would like it now. Idk.

Openings can be brutal on vintage fragrances- wait for a real dry down and give them more than one try at different times. Halston and Youth Dew were my signature scents in the 80s. Stopped all fragrance in the late 80s but I'm getting back into it. Thanks for the retro trip !!!

It's interesting how everyone reacts differently to different scents. I really like Vanderbilt by Gloria Vanderbilt, it's one of my favorites. I see it as super girly and powdery. I didn't think it was soapy, until you said that. I do get that now. I like that it is so inexpensive.

those fragrances are still available at Walmart and during Christmas you can get them for around 3$ in the Christmas section. 1 once bottles I believe. the obsession you have there with the brown top is a mens fragrance. there is a woman's version.

I enjoyed your video. Fragrance is such a subjective, polarizing thing. Bal a Versailles was Michael Jackson's signature fragrance after Elizabeth Taylor gave him a bottle as a gift (it was her favorite fragrance and Jackie Kennedy also loved it). It's pronounced "bal-a-veer-sigh" after the famous palace in France. When I was growing up, Tabu was considered a cheap, slutty cologne. Nice girls wore White Shoulders. 🤣 I liked Tresor back then. I do love Oriental musky/amber florals. I still love Shalimar for evening...and men LOVE the vanilla/amber notes (very warm, feminine and sexy). I also wear Bal a Versailles and Opium (evening). Daytime, I love the fresh and feminine floral, Eternity. I get so many compliments whenever I wear it. And, of course, I have a bottle of Chanel Number 5. The history of that fragrance is very interesting. It's the first time aldehydes were used in a fragrance. Coco Chanel wanted a fragrance that "smelled like a woman!" She didn't want a fussy, sweet floral scent which was prevalent at that time. She wanted her perfume to have a clean, icy coolness...so her perfumer travelled to the Arctic to try to capture that iciness. He prepared several formulations for Chanel to try. She took one whiff of formulation number 5, and said, "That's IT!" It was the aldehydes that created the crisp coolness Coco was looking for. I love it and spritz it on my pillow cases just like Marilyn Monroe did.

Does Tabù project?
Vintage Casimir is much deeper as spicier and oriental. Vintage Obsession is much smoother and deeper than the current one.

I think scents can’t be called “old smelling” there are classics and it’s how you rock it! I would rather go back now and pick a classic then smell like everyone and their rouge baccarat stuff and smell the same !? Some of the best orientals are the oldies I miss em up with a spray of Nirvana rose
