I'm in my 30s and I realized that following such beauty standards is a waste of time. I'm not as thin as in my teens and 20s, I may gained a few kilos but I'm happier with how I handle myself and I'm eating better, not skipping meals like I used to which sometimes it leads me to faint. Having my own income as an adult helps me choose to buy healthier food. I always like to say to myself that my body is not some trend to fit in but to be taken care of for maximum health. People forget also that aging is a blessing and privilege. Aging healthily is one of the aspects of having a happier and more fulfilled life...
so I say until I lived in Japan, ngl sometimes my self esteem is shattered around Japanese women. Makes me feel like I'm fat, large nosed and dark there cause I'm a Filipino woman. Still a nice country to go to from time to time.

Trying to be skinny to the point of fainting is definitively bad, and I'm glad you got over it.
You are right being healthy should be the goal. Too many people push towards the extremes and act like being obese or anorexic is somehow good, proper meals and exercise goes a long way.

The interview was great. I use to look at interviews to japanese people but they tend to feel somewhat repetitive at times. I guess there's a right approach to encourage Japanese people to share their personal views depending on the topic or the atmospehre. Thanks for the content!
About the beauty standards i can't say that the western standards are better or not. As a man, i feel like women have their own perceptions and concerns about their self-image. Therefore, even if I find my partner attractive, she may not see herself the same way. I think that ideally beauty standards should be flexible enough to allow women to feel good about themselves and maintain their health. While it can be argued that beauty standards should not compromise health, the social status associated with conforming to these standards makes them appealing and difficult to disregard. If someone attempts to pursue their own ideal body image, they might need to find internal motivation and consciously ignore societal pressures and beliefs. That might me even harder for japanese people.

I wish the standards did not affect mental and physical health of women that much, sometimes they’re just crazy and purposely not rly achievable so that people can spend a lot of money on different products etc for a long time

Hearing about the taping of the eyelids and such was a surprise for me. I've also heard many Japanese women use contact lenses to change their eye color. That's very different from America. That gentlemen was right about the trend of American women liking gyms more. They aren't striving to become super muscular, but to just stay lean and enhance prized female characteristics, like working for a bigger butt.

If once compares tribal people to modern Western life-styles, it's notable that the former generally come in similar body condition and type which is lean-muscle due to a physically active lifestyle whereas modern Western life-style there's a diverse range of body-types with excessive representation of obsesity in particular because of high availability of carbohydrates and low activity or sedentary life-styles. Equally there's a range of ethnic groups with genetically different baselines eg size, bone structure and so on.
Hence the clue here is for many people to increase their exercise or fitness, include strength training to promote muscle tissue and ideally develop a lean-muscle physique as a foundation to healthiness along with a nutritionally balanced diet which is not under or over eating and not eating unhealthy foods but eating more healthy foods.
In general the Japanese diet if traditional can be a healthy option as such. Of note for Japanese, being ethnically Mongoloid they have a more slight and slim size and bone density so generally being slim suits them better I'd say albeit increasing fitness and working on muscle tone would be best for that.
With respect to social media influence: Excessively thin or slim is veering towards a negative extreme there due to 2 core reasons:
    1. Clothes hang more gracefully from thinner and possibly taller bodies so work better in visual medium eg advertisements or video but the body is not more beautiful because of this but the image does appear more beautiful. This is an illusion to appreciate. The slim Japanese lady who has toned muscle mass for her size is in a better shape and still would look realistically wonderful in real life as opposed to being a 2 dimensional image photo on a flat screen or magazine. In 3 dimensions if she was wearing the same clothes I'd bet she was more beautiful... That said being slim or slight in women lends itself to elegance in fashion so the opposite is not true no matter how much Western politics has meddle: Plus Size really don't look better in fashion no matter how hard this is tried always fails.
    2. Photo or Video also distort the real world image of someone especially the FACE. The saying is that it adds 10Ibs (4.5Kg) which is quite significant. Inevitably in a culture of social media imags saturating and awash perceptions will be distorted to look even thinner or below the above proposed perfect standard in combination with the above effect on clothes to say nothing of this being more extreme in fashion itself a sub-set where an arms race of thinner will naturally accentuate this even more. Do note the saying "The fat on the face is the fat on the body" which is a natural guide to the person so too much fat on the face suggests too much on the body which works with this effect unfortunately. But equally knowing this, too much fat on the face blocks the facial features details of a person's UNIQUE FACE (which humans have evolved) so it really is important not to carry too much fat on the face and show your unique face - it is more beautiful both physically and psychologically.
The Japanese aesthetic of feminine beauty goes further culturally than the above including behaviour and social effect and presentation: Overally my personal impression is Japanese aesthetics have enhanced their womens' beauty positively in comparison to other cultural approaches that have negatively impacted, at least in my opinon and it is laudable.
The above information may interest and be helpful to people on the subject discussed. As can be seen social media has an effect toward an extreme, that is inevitable but the best results are as suggested: A lean-muscle physique is natural and healthy and perhaps most beautiful on purely physical, health and fitness criteria and also naturally works with fashion, cosmetics and cultural components of beauty also and importantly.

I've lived in 5 countries (3Euro + US + Japan) and there is difference between them all.
The European ones have a lot of overlap, but they are somewhere in the middle of the USA and Japan stereotypes.
I'd say the biggest difference is in men, but women have more little differencees. One huge thing I notice is hair colour, mostly grey hair. Most people under 60 in Japan seem to dye it (mostly natural black), while in Europe and the US, you see a lot of people with grey hair. I'm 40, my beard has a lot of grey, I never thought about it before I moved to Japan, but now, I am the only person with a grey'ing beard because 1) beards are quite rare and 2) grey hair isn't too common under 60. Also, bald men are less common in Japan.

Think the beauty standars vary depending on de country you live. So, extreme thin guys/girls tend to have less heathy bodies, because the have a high tendency of having anorexy or another eating disorders. It's the same when you gain a lot oy weight, your body will suffer the consecuences to not to eat healthy. So, it's better to have a good balance and also to be aware of being thin doesn't mean you're healthy.
On the other hand, I like your videos, and they are also excellent to practice japanese while you're listen to the participants' answers. Love it ! 😍 Keep going !💪

Having a Skinny/thin body doesn’t always mean being anorexic/depressed. You can have the best diet and lead the healthiest lifestyle possible and yet suffer from cancer, an overactive thyroid,Crohn,celiac-disease, congenital anomalies, nutcracker syndrom in my case. Or simply having a natural high Basal metabolism rate.

What is your definition of gaikokujin? It seems the first girl interviewed speaks Japanese well and lives in Japan, so how is she “foreign” to Japan? “Gaikokujin” seems to mean anyone not Japanese, but only westerners? Or other asians? Also what about the terrible term ハーフ?are they Japanese? What about 帰国生?basically what are the criteria/条件 for being 日本人? I know people who were born in Japan and grew up with the language and culture but are not Asian, are they Japanese?

I wish that every female, wherever they are from, would be happy just to look natural. Every woman is beautiful, but every woman (almost) are unhappy with their appearance? This is mainly due to years of beauty advertisements - written by men, and now social media. As long as you look healthy and don't overeat causing obesity, you women should accept it and be happy, not envious of other people and races.
Every race have their own characteristics, and to change them would be wrong. These days woman of all ages are having surgery etc to 'enhance' their looks into what they consider to be beautiful. Often this has a detrimental effect with lips swollen by BOTOX etc.
When will women ever be happy with themselves. I wish they could be. If in doubt, ask a man!!!
No man wants to cuddle a skeleton, I think the majority of men prefer a natural woman - whether she is slim or chubby - it's what's inside that is important. Stop listening to peer pressure and advertisements that are just designed to part you from your money; be yourself and be content and, therefore, happy.

People should stop listening to kpop. Because kpop has become mainstream, women are trying to look like kpop idols. And many kpop idols have plastic surgery and extreme diets.
kpop is one of the reasons why beauty standards have become more extreme since the 2020s.

      The cosmetic industry statistics:
"The global cosmetic market size is $246B with $19B coming from the men's category and $227B from the women's category."
That's more or less a ratio of 1 to 10 difference or magnitude x10 difference between Male and Females. I hardly think the cause of that is as you said "mainly due to years of beauty advertisements - written by men".
A quick inference is that Women themselves are the main drivers of the market difference. Now why do you think that is exactly? The most significant explanation should be quite obvious either using economic description or psychological and even combining both.

    • @NealeOBrien
      @NealeOBrien Před měsícem

@@commentarytalk1446 Thank you for your reply. I think that you mis-understood me slightly? When I said "mainly due to years of beauty advertisements - written by men", I meant in the history of advertisements! I didn't mean TV (which has only been around for about 70 years), or Social Media (which has only been common for 25 years), but I meant advertising that appeared in newspapers and magazines - which became common in the mid 19th century - about the start of the Meiji period.
These adverts were written by men, because it would have been unusual for women to work in those industries. Women only started to work in 'white collar' industries when the typewriter was invented, and it became more common to work.
Beauty, as seen through men's eyes, was a common theme in these adverts. They wanted to sell more of their products, so they exploited the insecurities of women to do so.
TV and Social Media have continued this practice, where of course, a lot of women now work.
It would be nice to live in a World where Women are happy with their appearance and don't feel pressurised (from a very young age) to conform to a certain 'look'.
I am a big fan of women and I would like them to be happy and content - not feeling like they are inadequate!

      @commentarytalk1446 Před měsícem

@@NealeOBrien Yes your argument is suggesting it's a result of Supply creating Demand but I think the sheer size of the numbers in this industry must suggest in fact that with change in economic conditions and personal purchase power, then in fact it's more likely Women are creating Demand which has grown so much and supply is merely catering to that?
There was cosmetics in ancient cultures and the "ornamentation of women in prehistoric tribes and present day tribes with more "beautification" of women (with rare exceptional examples of men taking this role being the exceptions to the rule) thus it's not merely a case of "men setting an unfortunate precedent which afflicts and magnifies today".
I appreciate your intelligent post and this was just one area you commented on in an otherwise cogent and well stated post (thank you for that) so apologies if my reply felt it was ignoring the rest of the constructive points you mention - but I think the data indicates economically and psychologically it's women who need to consider their own desire for cosmetics - it's not a problem caused by men: The ability to use cosmetics to present better and gain from that is probably highly significant hence the price of these products and diversity of them?
As to the solution, my other posts suggests the main area: Lean-muscle fitness along with nutritional eating habits. Apart from that I think Japanese ladies do exceptionally well with respect to other forms of beauty eg fashion, cultural standards. With respect to cosmetics the less flashy the more functional they'll always have a role to play - humans do strange things all the time. Though I'd definitely draw the line at invasive practices which another poster pointed out eg plastic surgery: It overall does not help people psychologically and as a trend sets off more mental health problems than it solves eg dependency, unreal expectations per person etc.
Namely from health and fitness, a healthy mindset arises which needs less cosmetics and less invasive surgery due to overall better self-esteem of body and mind, I'd suggest for consideration.
