- Welcome to "White Belt Tournament | A BJJ White Belt's 1st No-Gi Competition"
In this video, I've put together the full matches from my 1st tournament as a white belt in BJJ with less than 6 months of experience in BJJ.
The competition was the EVENTS BJJ Initiator Crown held at Olympic Park Sydney on 26 Feb 2021. The division was adult male -85kg no-gi.
The competitors on the day were very tough and it was a privilege to share the mats with them!
My coach on the day was JT from Bullet Proof For BJJ so check his socials out (the link is below)
--------
MATCH SUMMARY
The first match was a tough one where I was able to secure an armbar for the win.
The second match was against a solid opponent but fortunately (for me) I was able to secure the takedown with head control and converted to a back take with a rear-naked choke as the submission.
The third and final match of the day was against a really awesome guy named Ben. As you can see from watching the match, this was a very close match and it could have gone either way right until the very end. I was lucky enough to secure the takedown but was unfortunately unable to finish my multiple attempts at a guillotine and I ended up picking up the W up on 2 advantages.
THANK YOU
I wanted to say a special thank you to my coach at Alliance Sydney, Adam Childs, for teaching me everything I know. Thank you to JT who came out and coached me on the day, I couldn't have done it without your commentary, advice and commanding presence, haha. Thank you to Jeremy Skinner who has been my secret weapon teaching me so many techniques outside of class time to take my game to the next level, some of those techniques are featured in this video funnily enough.
Last but definitely not least I want to thank my main man Zac who stuck it out with me and not only filmed the entire day but filmed the entire day on a 2-day post-operation knee. He hobbled around to multiple mats, podium photos and the rest, thank you, Zac, you're a legend mate.

Dude listened to everything his coach said. Most people don’t. Coach was basically playing XBox lmao
hahahaha that's hilarious
Man that transition to the back in the semifinals was money!
Hahaha thank you so much! 😊 not bad for a noobie
As a white belt who's never competed this is very helpful to study. Great work.
Thanks William! I’m glad it can be of some use for you!
I think the biggest thing I realised from competing was the level of intensity, it’s so much higher than in the gym.
@@KierenLefevre That makes sense. I appreciate it.
Sick job bro, the coaching was so good too!
love how you instantly react to all the coach's tips. awesome!!
Thank you! 😁
this video was an absolute clinic. Best tourney video ive watched. Excellent coaching, excellent listening, and exciting jiu jitsu! Keep it up coach and student!
Thank you so much!
Great job mate! This is reassuring to watch as a white belt! Blue belts onwards make things look so simple sometimes, encouraging to watch a comp match and know I could implement some things I know into these (even as a pretty low level WB). Keep up the great work
Awesome work 👏🏿
Mate your content is great. By watching, I feel connected to this local BJJ community I only just joined two months ago. Navigating the journey in it's early stages is such a daunting task, but seeing your vids certainly helps with making it easier. I would like to try competing one day but I'm a little older and trying to get my body to keep up is a little slow going. Thank you for this and keep up the good work.
Hey man! thanks so much for your kind words! I highly recommend getting amongst a competition... win , lose or draw you'll always learn!
In the first match, I saw one of my training partners, he's a good guy, and a blue belt now. Just a cool thing to see, in spite of his loss on this occasion, as you were the better man. Small world... Congrats.
Dude that's so awesome! Hopefully we meet each other again on the mats at blue belt
The semi finals was amazing, good job
Thank you! 😁
Man great work and even better cardio and stamina bro, geez your a beast!!!
haaha thanks man!
That second dude touched like he was the most scared in his life 😭😭
Killer dude! 🦅
That was cleeeeean!!!!!
Hahahaha 🤙
"Yes son, very good" lol that was awesome
JT has mastered the art of sideline coaching, I freakin' love it hahaha
doing my first comp on the 19th as a white belt. Thanks for the video!
Hell yeah man! Good luck!! I highly recommend checking out ‘Jordan Teaches Jiujitsu’ guide on competing as well 😁
Hell of a job, good shit
Thanks so much man!
Baha just as good watching it the second time on the screen!! Excellent job big nads
@@Lucythegermanshepherd thanks dude, excellent footage ;)
In the last match at the end there an option is to underhook his leg amd go for the arm. You did the right thing since it was later in the match but earlier you would want to attack
You are so nasty (in a good way). Keep it up brother!
Great work! So really nice back takes! How long had you been a white belt before competing.
I’d been training for around 3-4 months before this comp
Imagine looking at your division and seeing the name Lachlan G. LMAOO I'd shit
Do you do your spiritual and energy work? So that it can help your BJJ. Boxing is more mental than physical. Due to my job schedule i will have to miss out BJJ every 2 weeks.
"yes son, very good" - JT lol
Hahahaha yes
My favourite is “snap down, sprawl down, snap down” 😂
Awesome job man! May I ask how old you are?
Thanks so much Nick!
I'm 26
@@KierenLefevre thank you for the reply! I asked because I wanted to get into jiu Jitsu and possibly compete! I’m 25 right now and was a little intimidated since it’ll be something I’ve never done before and didn’t know if there were like age limits or anything like that! I’ll keep watching your videos as inspiration and look forward to seeing your progress!
@@nickseabolt519 Aw man 25 is the perfect time! My Jiu Jitsu coach started when he was around 24-25 and is now a black belt and a killer. I can't recommend it highly enough! You won't regret it.
@@nickseabolt519 if you haven't made the jump into BJJ yet I highly recommend you do. I am just starting at 30, only a couple months deep now. Most addicting and beneficial time spent. The only limit is what you put on yourself. There are a couple guys at my spot 40's/50's that put in work and would twist someone up. Get after it
Like to see more proficiency in the basics and fundamentals.
You and me both!
What was the weight category ?
weight category was -85kg
What's the weight class?
Hey Josh, the weight class was -85kg (188lb)
Why are you holding his rash guard my man :D
Which part are you referring to?
@@KierenLefevre It's just a minor thing for 3 seconds on 1:37
How big is jiu jitsu I was thinking about getting into since I did wrestling for 3 years
I'm 3 years in now and I can say that it's hands down the best decision I've ever made in my life to train jiujitsu. Jump in and don't look back. Plus, coming from a wrestler background will put you at a significant advantage.
@@KierenLefevre can you go far with this sport?like possibly make it a career and get paid or is it more like just a hobby
@@omari7877 Honestly, it's very difficult to make money in the short term with jiujitsu but if making money or making a career from the sport is your goal I would definitely reconsider your intentions.
Nice work. But honestly the last guy demonstrated much more skill. You just muscled your way to victory.
I had 3 months of training he had over a year 🤣
@@KierenLefevre Fair point. Good effort.
Dude is on juice
bahahaha 🤣🤣
Are you still a white belt. You have skills
Nah man just about to get purple
Good stuff, I'm a 47 year old white belt. Competing for the first time on Saturday. Enjoyed your video
The sideline coaching is unfair. If I had to deal with my opponent getting real time instructions from a black belt I'd be pissed off.
It's available to either person though, anyone can coach from the sideline. It's funny though, it has actually come in handy hearing the calls of my opponents coach because it can give you an idea of what their game is and what they're about to do to shut it down.
@@KierenLefevre I see, thanks for explaining! That makes sense. If your opponent doesn't have a coach present what do you do?
@@alecthompson9585 I've been in that position plenty of times. I just focus on my game, sometimes coaching doesn't help
Killer dude! 🦅
Thanks man!
