  • In this one my buddy Ryan and I discuss Hair Metal during a bleak period: 1996-2000. However, was it as bad as most of us remember? Maybe... maybe not. Come check it out!

96-2000 was not a good time period for us. If you have to dig up a Michael Monroe solo album that wasn’t even released stateside… you’re really searching deep down in the rabbit hole. Great albums tonight though! Lotta great stuff! 🍻and keep up the great work.

Most of the albums mentioned I tbh haven't given much thought to. I often and probably incorrectly in some cases assume that alot of the 90's/00's albums released by 80's bands in one way or another feature a more modern sound or style. With that being said some absolutely killer obscure glam got released in that time period. Guttersluts, Spiral Fetish, Orphan Punks, Hollywood Teasze, The Mistakes, The Peppermint Creeps, Pretty Boy Floyd, Trash Brats and Sick Six Crush etc....all released albums in that era that i absolutely love!

That butch walker album was a really good pop rock record. Right after that he tried going all Americana singer songwriter Emo and lost me. He just sorta goes with whatevers trendy. I find that shyt annoying. It just tells me they want to be famous and don’t actually care about music.

Guru, take another listen to Slaughter’s Back To Reality. It is awesome, so much swagger and groove. Jeff Blando adds a Zakk Wilde feel to it. Ryan, if you give Belly To Belly another spin, it’s an album that benefits from being very aware of the lyrics. They are brilliant. 1996 to 2000 were huge years for me because my band was getting the opportunity to open for all our heroes when they came through town. We had an iconic club that everyone would play on their way up or on their way down (and some like Ozzy and Bon Jovi would play it to warm up for big tours). So if it was hard rock/ hair metal we would get the call. We got to open for Warrant, Firehouse, Great White, Tesla, Sebastian Bach, Dee Snider, Kix, it was a magical time. A few more releases that I loved:
Mr. Big - Get Over It 1999 (Ritchie Kotzen on guitar and it smokes)
Slaughter - Revolution 1997 ( some great songs, CMC records kept the genre alive for awhile)
Buckcherry - Self Titled 1999 (absolute blast of fresh air, just blew me away)
Then Poison had 2 releases in 2000 - Crack A Smile & More and Power To The People. The & More part of Crack A Smile is pure shit but the Blues Saraceno songs are fantastic and the 5 new songs on Power are great but the live tracks are worthless.

Great video, always enjoy when Ryan is on! There are a few albums from these years I have to mention: I really enjoy the first two Funny Money albums, War&Peace- The Flesh and Blood Sessions, Erotic Suicide's second album - Perseverance, Mad Margritt's first album - In the Name of Rock, Shameless - Queen 4 a Day, Bad to the Bone- Itchin', and Davy Vain- In From Out of Nowhere. Two that are great but were releases of older material are: Jailhouse-S/T and Badlands- Dusk. I should've included Jailhouse's Alive in a Mad World EP for 1989, "Please Come Back" is one of my favorite underground hair metal songs

There is a Kevin Dubrow connection throughout the hair metal saga . Obviously the beginning with Quiet Riot springing the genre into mainstream with MTV and Billboard #1 . It would also be KD who realized around 99 that these bands could still draw a crowd, and if they consolidated their efforts , they could really draw a crowd . Sorta of a hair metal Lollapolooza . That’s when I came home in leave from the Marines and would see the first Glam Slam Metal Jam in the Woodlands Texas . It would reignite bands like Poison , Cinderella , Warrant , and ultimately get Motley original Crue back in 04 ( Vince was solo on Glam Slam) .

Great episode. Definitely a couple that I haven’t heard of and going to check out. I’m 52 and grew up loving the 80’s hair metal and still into it just as much as then but I always think of buckcherry as a bastard child of GnR and L.A. Guns and I would put Buckcherry’s ‘99 debut on my list and Saliva’s 2000 debut. Those would be the bands that obviously weren’t out in the 80’s but I thought they were bringing back that classic feel especially Buckcherry. And I love that great white album and the new tattoo album. The song Fake is a great motley tune. Bon Jovi’s crush album is cool. Different vibe but cool and I like most of slaughter’s back to reality album. Slaughter has always had a cool opening track with their albums

-LA Guns shrinking voilet (this is amazing, a spectacular album with Jizzy Pearl singing, he and Tracii had great chemistry, it's my #1 for this time period)
-The Loveless / a tale of gin and salvation (the guys from the Electric Angels, great album, more similar to Candy's whatever happen to fun than the EA album)
-Warrant belly to belly (Indian giver, letter to a friend... loved it then, still love it today)
-Kiss Psycho circus (Gene's tunes are a highlight - within, journey, we are one)
-Kiss carnival of souls (Gene again kills it - Childhood end, seduction of the innocent, hate, i walk alone)
-Motley Crue new tattoo (I didn't like it at the time but both 'she needs rock and roll' & 'first band on the moon' are killer)
    -Cheap Trick 97 (excellent)
-Van Halen III (maybe I'm the only one who loves this album, Ed's playing is great and timeless, and i liked Gary's spin... not better than Fair Warning or Women & Children, but it's Van Frickin Halen)
-Marvelous 3's hey album (the guys were in southgang, so i say it counts, and it is great!)
-(honorable mention) Motley Crue generation swine - i really enjoy a few of the tunes (afraid, generation swine, anybody out there, let us prey confessions, flush) but i understand why it gets crapped on...

  • @1Vettefan
    @1Vettefan Před 2 měsíci

I don't get all the hate for "Shadowlife" by Dokken. It is a departure from the standard sound but I actually like it more than the "Dysfunctional" album that preceded it. As far as ballads go if you like "Nothing Left to Say" off Dysfunctional you should like "Bitter Regret" off Shadowlife. Beautiful song. The other ballad "Convenience Store Messiah" has some nice lyrics about a store worker that helps local homeless people. I really like that one too. I like the faster songs such as "Sky Beneath My Feet", "Here I Stand", "Puppet on a String" also too. To be fair I like grunge and alternative music too and if you absolutely hate that I can understand why Shadowlife wouldn't appeal. However, I still insist that "Bitter Regret" is a really nice ballad that should be given a fair listen.

Part of the problem was few bands could get any radio airplay or promotion at all. There were actually some good albums that came out but so many of the bands were on something like the CMC International Label at that time. I appreciated the label signing so many of the bands but they didn't have the finances to push anyone. Not hair metal but Bruce Dickinson put out a couple of great solo albums.

And because it's Mike Tramp, his solo album Capricorn from '97 - it's softer but I like it a lot.

Axel Rudi Pell was originally in a band called steeler not to be confused with Ron keel band steeler but anyway he in my opinion never lost his form and just kept making the music he likes through the 90s and until today but many other bands lost that formula by 96 especially but a few returned to it by 99-2000 for example TNT 1997 firefly to me isn’t very good but TNT transistor 1999 is much better and closer to that original TNT formula as always thank you for these videos your subscribers love them and we appreciate you

Helldarado isn't a bad album. But they definitely went full 180 from where they went with their previous album, K.F.D. In which was a much different from anything else they've done. But one hell of an album regardless. They definitely shocked many people with that album and stage show for that one. Helldarado was a 180 back to their early days. And pretty darn good to me. But I would of probably preferred another angry album like K.F.D. from them before going back to the earlier type of music
