In the first gathering in this series we proudly invite Shaneihu Yawanawá (Acre, Brazil), who is the son of the tribes leader Biraci Yawanawá. Shaneihu himself is the chief of the Yawarany village of the Yawanawá tribe, spread across about 12 villages along the Gregorio River of the Amazon. Shaneihu is a talented musician and an iconic personality for his people, who travels extensively, sharing the ancient knowledge of his people and spreading awareness about the crucial situation of the Amazon and the indigenous populations therein. It is a great honor for us to be able to help him spread his message of unity and planetary awareness.
The Yawanawá (People of the Wild Boar) are a tribe of around 1200 people living in the Amazonian region of the state of Acre in Northern Brazil.
The Nineteenth century marked a time of genocide and slavery for indigenous people living in the Brazilian Amazon. It was then they made the first contact with Western society. During a second contact period, North American missionaries such as New Tribes Mission of Brazil came to “evangelize” their community, which resulted in the loss of many of the rituals, dances, artistic expressions and cultural and spiritual manifestations. As late as in the 1990s the Yawanawá were finally able to reestablish sovereignty after
generations of interference by rubber tappers and missionaries.The Yawanawá and their allies are dedicated to developing a model of sustainability that allows them to protect their lands and engage with the outside world on their own terms, without compromising their cultural and spiritual identity. The tribe has been working tirelessly to increase territory, reinvigorate Yawanawá culture, and establish economically and socially empowering relationships with the outside world. They now live in a territory that’s roughly 200,000 hectares with 95% of its biodiversity intact. Many projects are in the making, like permaculture projects and building of schools which teach their culture and their language.
