    A never-updated Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard MID 2010 MacBook Pro 13-inch laptop got in my hands. So I upgraded it with a fresh 480GB Western Digital SSD and a new battery.
    In another video, I will let You guys know the exhausting software upgrade process and countless hours of searching the web for official Mac OS X stock base installation files. Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion to El Capitan to finally High Sierra.

    I write this comment from the exact same machine! I've upgraded to a SSD with 8GB of RAM running High Sierra. Although I do believe with High Sierra I can upgrade the RAM to 16GB. Before the upgrade I wasn't able to run more than two programs without significant slow-downs probably due to heavy page faulting. But now it runs like a dream. I'm a CS student at ASU and with the upgrades and a secondary monitor and wireless mouse I can multitask CLion, Word, and Chrome with no issues and complete my school work! Thanks for the video!

      @@mhamadcommander7785 I've never run Photoshop on this machine so I can't say for sure, but just looking at the system requirements online I would have to say no. It says you need an nVidia GeForce GTX 1050 or better whereas the mid 2010 has an nVidia GeForce 320M thats non-upgradeable and is a much weaker GPU. However, you may be able to find an older legacy version of Photoshop that would work. BTW: since my review 8 months ago I have upgraded the RAM to its full 16GB and gave it a brand new battery.

    I have a mid2010 15” MBP. Added 2 SSD’s - one in boot drive location and one in place of the optical drive (used OWC data doubler kit). These Mac’s have slower SATA ports but the SSD still makes a massive difference. I have 8 GB ram and run High Sierra. This Mac is a tank and very durable. Using as a TM backup destination, and it is awesome. I have it hardwired to the network and plugged in 24x7 (battery is weal). So far so good. Apple hardware is really great.

    I have a 2008 unibody Macbook. I upgraded to SSD, 8gb 1066mhz ram. Though significantly it improved in performance, it is very well being held down by the CPU and bus speeds. I think the best Macbook for upgrade for 2022 is the 2012 Macbook Pro. Which has a modern bus speed

  • @Navak3
    @Navak3 Před 2 lety +7

    So I've upgraded mine as well and figured I'd just put this in the comments in case someone is skimming along haha. As of 2021 I say YES it's worth it, but it depends on the user.
    If you
    1) Find that the cost of this macbook + parts is cheaper than any other mac you can find and you want to add 2 hard drives for more storage and don't care about speed necessarily.
    2) Either you still have one of these laying around in your basement or someone gives you their old computer and just want to fix it up to use
    If the user
    1) JUST uses a browser for like youtube, spotify, flash game type of stuff etc. They have to not care if they just stick to 1080p or 720p video.
    2) JUST uses simple applications like word, powerpoint, excel etc.
    3) I'd even go as far as to say IDE's like eclipse or QT would still work as well, but would just be slow when compiling. So it can be used for computer science/software engineering stuff so long as it isn't processing intense or like GPU intense.
    4) For electrical engineering design stuff, Yes you likely can use this for eagle but the autorouter is probably too much for this to handle. Would not recommend simulation stuff at all (assuming any circuit simulation stuff exists on mac at all)
    5) For anyone thinking about using linux, yes it'll work and I've done it before. Depending on the distro it may be slightly more optimized than MacOS since Apple does do this "planned obsolescence" stuff with their software but you'll face slowness regardless of OS. It's just a question of how much.
    In terms of my hardware:
    Macbook pro mid 2010 13"
    OS: Mac OS High Sierra
    Ram: 16GB ddr3 1067mhz
    Hard drive 1TB SSD
    In real life It's still the exact same speed as in this video. The RAM allows me to have more stuff open at once but that's it. I'd like to add that technically you can remove the DVD drive and stick another SSD in there and have 2 separate hard drives. You may even be able to RAID the two together to essentially make 1 faster SSD but I think the bottleneck in this computer isn't the hard drive, it's the GPU and CPU among other things. So using RAID probably wouldn't do much of anything in terms of performance since the CPU and GPU are not very capable.

      @@rn40721 so to answer your question, yes you can just barely do 1080p60fps. I find it's kind of at its limit while working though haha. The chrome extension "h264ify" helps a bit. 720p60fps works a lot better though and is significantly more consistent. 1080p without 60fps is like 100% fine though. It could be a matter of finding the right chrome extension to either make it 30fps or mess with it some other way

      About the upgrade parts, I don’t think there is any more “space” or reason to upgrade that old of a machine. You can only upgrade the ram to 8GB (4+4), but even that wont give You any extra boost or second breath to Your computer.
      If You want to use Final Cut Pro or any other photo or video apps, this 2010 Mac would have hard time to deal with such tasks.

      Hi!
      There are only certain macOS systems that can be installed on specific year MacBooks as their latest.
      If You want to get the newest software on Your 2009 MacBook Pro meaning that it could run the latest macOS Big Sur, the 2009 MacBook Pro will not run even a couple of macOS's before Big Sur.
      The latest software You can install on Your 2009 MacBook Pro would be only El Capitan .
      So for a perspective, there is the latest macOS Big Sur (2020) followed by macOS Catalina (2019), macOS Mojave (2018), macOS High Sierra (2017), macOS Sierra (2016) and macOS El Capitan (2015) - this one is the official latest supported macOS on Your 2009 MacBook Pro.
      SSD sure will help for Your computer to boot up and open apps much faster, but not for getting a fresher macOS system on it.

It is still on 10.6.8 and I tried installing El Capitan, but it failed multiple times. You're saying that I first need Mountain Lion and then Capitan and then High Sierra? I'm now trying to do so, but after choosing my USB drive from boot options, it seems I'm stuck at "Installing" white screen with blue-and-white moving progress bar. Have been wondering for days, why does Apple have to over complicate this?? Would be so much easier just formatting the storage drive and being able to install any software version right away.
    EDIT: if you still remember, could you please tell me what steps to do to get the latest OS High Sierra? I also plan to upgrade to SSD. Thanks.

    • @TechUThrough
      @TechUThrough  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi!
      I totally understand You. I'm thinking that the Mountain Lion is needed as the first step here, because of the fact that it was the first macOS that featured the App Store. Previously we needed a DVD Lion disc to install macOS through the DVD drive.
      So only after that, the recovery mode started to fully connect to the update/restore servers. My guess.
      Nevertheless, the process was really frustrating as I had a. hard time finding an official old macOS installation bundles/files.
      After I found a working Mountain Lion (that was the hardest part, because You need the very first, not some updated version) and El Capitan, the rest was making a couple of bootable USB flashes to finally install one after another.

      @@TechUThrough Since I first attempted to install El Capitan (unsuccessfully), it still installed the El Capitan recovery (10.11). Now when I formatted the hard drive via Disk utility, then booted while holding the Options (Alt) key, there are two options to boot from: The bootable USB with stock Mountain Lion (10.8) dmg that I was able to download and create, and Recovery (10.11). After choosing the bootable USB, the installation starts and throws error after 5 seconds. I think that my very first attempt to install El Capitan messed it up somehow as it seems to me that the EFI (BIOS) thinks that El Capitan is its native MacOS version. No idea what to do now.

    I asked for a MacBook for my birthday and my sweet mom ended up getting me a really outdated one but I don’t want her thinking I’m ungrateful. I’m doing online school and it keeps overheating, the fan won’t turn on before it shuts down and I took the back plate off and there seems to be nothing preventing the fan from cooling the rest of the Mac. What should I do?

      You’ll need a screwdriver kit, new thermal paste and alcohol wipes and you’ll have to look up a tutorial to get to the CPU and replace the thermal paste. You’ll likely have to disassemble quite a bit to get to the CPU, can’t remember with this model.
      Once you’re inside, Clean it off with alcohol wipes and clean the heat pipes with alcohol wipes too. And remove all the dust on the logic board. Might have to replace the fans, sounds like they are faulty or dust is stopping the system from working correctly.
      It might help too if you put in an SSD, they can help with thermals slightly.

Like Mine is 4gb ram and I think 250gb inside the storage I I want it like more space cause I want to run chrome and stuffs but it is necessarily to upgrade the battery? If yes is it stronger than the original one like can it last more hours? I hope you answer me thanks

    • @TechUThrough
      @TechUThrough  Před 2 lety +3

      Hi! Thank You for the question.
      First of all, You can do it by yourself and not give the Mac to a store, the steps are simple to do by Yourself and You will save some more money in the process. Of course, if You are not sure about it, You can ask for assistance from the store.
      But the main thing is to find and buy the right parts (RAM, SSD and battery) for Your 2010 Mac.
      If you have 4GB of RAM, that means that probably you have 2+2 modules inside. 8GB is really O.K. and therefor You need to purchase 4+4 RAM modules or even 8+8 RAM if You want to use the max. of 16GB RAM on Your Mac. You can find detailed info about the RAM here:
      everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2.4-aluminum-13-mid-2010-unibody-specs.html
      Usually 500GB of storage should be O.K., but choose ONLY SSD's if you really want to feel that Your old computer feels and runs noticably faster. By standard, the SSD's have 240GB or 480GB storage, so you can choose the 480GB SSD drive.
      About the battery, it wont give you like 8 hours of work time, but a new battery is needed for the computer to run normally. Depending on what You use Your Mac for, new battery will give you more runtime anyway.
      Best place to get legit old and new Mac parts is OWC site:
      eshop.macsales.com/
      Here you can check the parts compatability for specific (Your Mac) model.

      Hi. If 8GB is maximum for the computer, You should choose 4GB+4GB ram sticks.

      @@jl4280 In my opinion, the brand choice doesn't play that big of a role here, just get the right 1067 MHz DDR 3 frequency ones. The best way is to check all the correct Mac parts in the OWC site. Here is the correct OWC 2010 MacBook Pro model link for RAM:

      My thought is, that Garageband would run but only with a couple of instruments on a project. As soon as you ad up, again, the RAM would need to be upgraded.

      @TechUThrough  Před 2 lety

      It’s hard to justify a 2010 Mac in late 2021. Though it will work, star-up and open apps fast if you upgrade to an ssd internal drive, there will be no Apple support anymore.
      I would say, it’s more nostalgia here than a practical need to use that old of a tech as say your main computer.
      But to answer your question, if it’s in a good condition, 100 bucks sounds like a good deal!
