  • In this video I show how I change a bearing on a VOLVO 240 Estate.
This is the front bearing which has a lot of play in it and needs changing.
The procedure shown is the same if you need to change brake discs as well.

Just watched the video again to get things straight before tackling my 1984 Volvo 240 Estate, just clicked over into its 40th year! didn't have a press so (very carefully) used the freeze/heat method as I didn't have any suitable sockets etc tot use a drift, you have made a really clear and informative video without any macho stuff, a rarity on YT these days :)

I changed the bearings on my 93 240 yesterday using this video as a guide. Very helpful-thanks!
I couldn’t tell which way the rubber seal goes on so hopefully I did it right. Thanks again 😹

I am doing a front wheel bearing on my 1992 240 wagon very soon, i did both rear wheel bearings a while back.
That wasn't very hard either, but a hydraulic press would have been nice for me to have for that job.
Thanks for showing us how it's done :)

      @SeasideGarage  Před 3 lety +2

Ive done many in the past (other cars) without a press... and its certainly doable... but its so much more controlled with a press... and really enjoyable!
      Thanks for watching!

I did this yesterday after watching your video twice.
I have no press and also no perfect fitting socket set to tap the outer baring in.
so I had cut the old one and heated that up so it could be bent a bit smaller.
this worked perfect to tap the new one in with a piece of wood on-top of that.
    thanks cool dude

I would recommend packing these kinds of bearings with grease, instead of just coating them in grease. Put a slob of grease in your palm and rub the bottom of the bearing against your palm until it comes out the top of the bearing. Just a little tip to make your bearings last a little longer:)

@@SeasideGarage i think by the book its the «correct way» of doing roller bearings like these, you can also just coat them in grease and it’ll work fine but they wont last as long. Packing them keeps the whole bearing greased at all times:)

Yes, the 240 brake system was built with safety in mind. It has two fluid lines to each of the front calipers, so that if there is any type of brake failure you will still have one of the two lines working as it should. It works this way... both same front caliper pistons (either upper or lower) connect to one of the back rear calipers, then the other set of calipers up front connect to the other caliper in the rear. So this way if one of the two brake systems goes out you will still have a brake system.

I had an Austin 1800 on which the front o/s bearing collapsed whilst I was driving - scary. When I pulled the hubcap off to see what had happened I had one hand at the top and one hand at the bottom - the bottom hand was showered with red hot ball bearings. Since then if T remove a hubcap its always one hand either side lol
