  • Since the mid 1970s, California policy makers have attempted to address the ever-growing problem of homelessness and incarceration of people with serious mental illness. Despite these efforts, the numbers of people who are homeless and incarcerated with mental illness have reached unprecedented highs. In this program, Dr. Joel Braslow, professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and History at UCLA, lays out why this historically informed perspective is crucial to understanding why we have failed to solve the fundamental problems of caring for our most vulnerable citizens. This program is a presentation of UC Center Sacramentro. Recorded on 02/22/2023. [4/2023] [Show ID: 38662]

We need to demand taxes from states that have shipped them here. A former mayor of New York was infamous for sending homeless to the “better weather”

That's why we need to think of it as a national issue. The federal govt needs to help fund centers across the country for treating people with SMI to help assist for long-term care.

First of all, for those that have a car/van/rv, we need parking lots around every major city in this country. Picnic tables to get out of their vehicles and do work, socialize. Bus stop out front, in case vehicle is not working, etc. Match up each person with a social worker to assign medical, dental, and counseling. Match up with business MENTOR, and upon finishing the program (i.e. budgeting, legitimate job training), they can go to tiny house communities. Tiny houses are the answer to out-of-control housing costs! The longer a person is struggling (financially, socially), the more intense the medical and psychological damage will be. We MUST build tiny house communities NOW!!!!!

Good information. This young fellow speaks as if is on the clock or he has a weapon pointed at his head, Calm down cutie, you're doing great! In the late sixtes worked at a bookstore right up the street from the Norwalk site, at that time things were getting pretty raw from new drug culture and the summer of love. Guess the world has always been a little nuts.

Taller, bigger housing projects are an inevitable part of the solution. It's bad for property values and renting prices, but these things were too high to begin with

    Title says it's about homeless.
All he talks about is mental illness

A third of homeless people have a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar. Most of the rest probably have ADHD, severe anxiety, PTSD, or at least depression. Mental illness often leads to drug addiction, which people consider more related to homelessness. No happy person gives up everything for drugs.

@samshepperrd, the title is about why we're failing the homeless. Having shitty mental health care is one of the ways we're failing the homeless.

Its inappropriate to project what anyone wants or take their journey from them by not allowing them to have it themselves. Life is learning and you can't save anyone.
Working in a mental health clinic, I learned it's a choice. Some people prefer an open life, " free of the terror of enclosures."
Just because society considers it offensive, that's not an excuse to attack.
Offer safe camping areas in safe places with safe accessable services.
Stop crippling society giving to the homeless poverty consciousness that no one wants.

Excuse but a correction: We didn't fail the homeless. The homeless failed themselves through their drug addiction and poor life skills, such as the inability to get an education or hold down a job. True some are mentally ill, but they should be institutionalized as that is more humane than letting them on the streets. The time for excuses is over.

Less than 1/3 have a drug addiction. A large portion are families that were doing their best but an unexpected financial cost like medical care wiped their savings and made them homeless. Things happen that are out of people's control. People do their best, but their best can only get them so far if they don't have the tools to succeed or a community to help. There's a reason why humans are social animals.
