Tutorial #75- FREE: Mini Watercolor Journal Tutorial: FREE - Jak na to + styl
Just made one with things I had in my studio. Saving £8-£10. I used 3 x A3 pages of my favourite WC paper and made a 36 page 4"x3 3/4" perfect little sketch pad for mini water colours and ink and wash paintings on the go. I couldn't be happier with the finished result. I left out the ribbons as I didn't want them getting in the way while I work, I'll use a hair elastic to keep it closed in my bag, and I made the hard back out of an old water colour board, the type you get in cheap art sets that isn't very good quality. Many many thanks for such a great tutorial. 😃x
J’adore l’astuce permettant au carnet de rester bien à plat. Merci.
Excellent work and presentation
Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial. Your journal is perfect for what we want - a watercolor journal that lays FLAT so the person can do a two page spread if they wish. Your directions are clear, concise and easy to follow. I will be sure to give credit for your excellent design to all the people in the class. Thank you again for your kindness.
You are so welcome!
Just a tip: Gaffers tape or self-adhesive cloth tape can typically be found in 3" widths and would eliminate the tape seam.
I love the cover . Making it refillable is the best
Thank you! Your slip in cover is brilliant!
What a lovely gift to give or receive!!
And I love the size!
We’ll done.
I am heading to the craft room now to try it! I’ve been watching tutorials for this all afternoon and this is the best! Thank you for sharing ❤️
Thankfully you mentioned not to glue the binding otherwise I was thinking oh I will glue the binding to be more secure😂 and now I made two journals using this method. They come out so well. Thank you for such a detailed tutorial ❤
… and when the journalist is full you can swap another one in that cover.
Thank you for this - it’s probably the clearest instructional video on making these little books that I’ve watched.! New subscriber.
Such a cute, clever journal! This would be a perfect little gift "from the heart" for a painting friend! Thank you for sharing.
You’re welcome!
Love it, love it, love it! And I just love your paintings too. You show the best way of achieving reflection, glass, metals...all that hard stuff. I think I can do it!! Thank you!!! ❤
Thank you so much!
Stretchy cord sounds genius!
Great directions! What a very fun little project, and it's a little bit different than others I've seen. Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Such a great tutorial! I love the way you made the "loop" to slide the pages in. That was a great idea! Thanks!
Ingenious and adorable! Thanks so much for this tutorial. 😊🎨
I can’t wait to try this but perhaps a little bit larger, I’m not sure. I don’t have big sheets of WC paper rather I use Arches 9x12 for most of my paintings. Is there an area here where you have a list of materials? I have waxed linen I can use but I like the clear stretchy ‘thread’ you’re using here. I make bookmarks and embellish them with beads and charms so the clear kind would be perfect for me. I love how all the signatures lay flat👏😀
Wonderful video! 😊 Just finished mine. Very happy with how flat it opens! ❤
Clearly explained! Beautiful!
This is incredible.❤ I will try this for sure.
That was an excellent tutorial!
Thank you for sharing and all the great information ❤
Thank you for excellent training.
What a great video! Thanks!
This is so cute 💜
Thank you great great video… mine turn out so cute! 💕💕💕
Super idea!
Love this, great tutorial thank you
Glad it was helpful!
really cool tutorial.. thanks
Brilliant!
Thanks for sharing this. ***If anyone has experience to my question can you please give your thoughts?***I've been thinking about making a watercolor journal/sketch book but it seems to me like I'll be struggling the entire time but in the end it's more than likely worth it. I also have a question, have you had any issues with oil resist spots on your paper due to handling it without gloves ( natural oil on our skin)? I know that with me painting or just using watercolor paper in general I've had spots that seemed to resist paint and ended up figuring out it's because I was handling my paper too much . I also always wash my hands before I watercolor or art/ craft etc. So I feel like if someone who doesn't do that that they would have an ever more difficult time with oil resist problems. Btw the oil resist thing can be pretty cool but only when your trying to intentionally do it lol. Have a great day
Keeping your hands clean is the best advice I have. I also don't like buying watercolor paper where people have been able to touch it, like at a craft store. When buying at an art supply, I avoid the top sheet and handle it on the edges. I love making watercolor sketchbooks! I use the whole sheet, though, measuring and making my own page sizes, including the original deckle edges.
WONDERFUL
Is Elmer’s glue better than book binding glue? I purchased this special glue that supposedly is flexible but my pages still aren’t holding with additional vinyl taping in the seems.
Tq for sharing, I would like to try. ❤️
I like this method - it seems easier than most of the others I've seen. One question: why do 3 sheets at a time, rather than running the cord through all the sheets at once?
Each set of three pages is called a signature. If you were to bind all the pages together at once it would be too difficult to bind and the book wouldn't lay flat.
Do you have a video for making an accordion journal?
Hi Lynn - I am planning to try making this mini watercolor journal over the weekend. I am wondering how you handle the issue of the "right" side of the paper for painting on - rough side? Do you just ignore that when making a journal like this? It seems like every other page will be the front side of the paper and the back side of the paper. Any thoughts are appreciated.
The way that I do it, using groups of 3’s is that the middle one is folded the opposite way, like an inside out. This way no matter how it lays open both sides are either rough or smooth.
If you are using good paper, both sides should be the same.
So when you open it up, you end up with a front and back of the paper?
yes
The most important part where the stitching for the third part cant be seen poperly. so disappointing.
PAYtreon... not PAHtreon... because you are getting PAID... Not.. PAHD. 🙂
