  • DIY Watercolor Sketchbook EASY NO SEW 100% Cotton Arches : Bockingford Journal
I search constantly for a quality watercolor sketchbook that doesn't fall apart and isn't super expensive. I just can't find anything so I decided to make one. This way I can use any paper I want and make them as small or large. The best part is I made it for pennies aside for what I spend on the paper and all the materials I use come from the original paper pads that come with the paper.

Update: don’t use Mog Pog. It works but is not Ph neutral. Use PH neutral PVA it’s available on Amazon.

Did you ever try using white painting tape for the center binding?

  • @danieljamesbinderystu2968

I myself make custom goatskin leather Hardbound watercolor sketchbooks with all the choices of 100% cotton watercolor papers. I also hand marble my own paper for 1/2 cover and 1/4 cover bindings, and for end pages. Unfortunately iam not set up yet to sell online, iam only doing local. Most watercolor sketchbooks are made with completely incorrect sewing and spine construction. They will use a machined lose stitch with weak thin nylon and they don't glue the spine with crossing linen pieces inside the layers of glue. I also use rami band or linen tape sewn into the spine in 4 spots with a french linked stitch, 4 layers of glue on the spine and 2 layers of linen in-between the glue layers. My sketchbooks lay completely flat and dont split on the spine..EVER, even if its soaked in water ( yes ive tried lol ) With tons of water use, it's a must to do this... and etchr doesn't do it correctly. ETCHR's spines ALWAYS crack, split or break apart! Like I said, they are stitched loose and with cheap, thin nylon thread. You need all linen, it doesn't rot and it's acid free and lasts. If iam not in the mood, or have time to make my own sketchbook for myself... I buy sketchbooks from Koval.
He is a really nice guy in Poland and ships worldwide ( fast too ) . Iam in the process of getting all of that ready for myself, to ship all over. But go checkcout his sketchbooks on his site. I believe it's koval sketchbook. Com just Google it. I've used his sketchbooks and they don't break apart and are made with most of the top brands of professional artist grade 100% cotton papers. Just a tip for ya, dont use mod podge, elmers school glue or hot glue on anything for binding lol. They are not acid free, they yellow and aren't good with any moisture what so ever. Use PH neutral PVA, its extremely flexible and wont crack split or leach acid into your paper. Have a good one

I’m sure you make wonderful sketchbooks the problem is I am in Canada and everyone charges a lot for the sketchbooks and then additional $40 to ship it to me. But this took me 20 minutes to make and it only cost me $19

if you want to open your book and have the right or wrong side the same on both sides of the spread, alternate between folding right sides together, and wrong sides together, then place them in your book alternately...so that when you open it...there is a rigth side on the left and a right side on the right....or there will be a wrong side on the right and a wrong side on the left...then if you paint over the 2 pages...you will always be on ALL RIGHT SIDE OF THE PAPER or ALL WRONG SIDE OF THE PAPER...hope you get my drift...thanks

Hi Jacqueline I’m inspired to make a sketchbook now!
In my card making experiences, I’ve used these two tools for creasing successfully.
The first is a rotary cutter, used to perforate the watercolor paper down the center. The rotary cutter uses a certain blade , SKS-7 DAFA BLADE , to perforate the paper. It works perfectly to prep the paper for accurate folding.
The second tool is a brayer, (used for printmaking) It works equally well to crease the perforated fold. I use a one inch wide wood Brayer but a rubber one would work also and I always use a cover paper over the watercolor paper.
Thank you for sharing so much information. I just joined your beginners class and am excited to make a sketchbook.❤

What a great idea! Stone paper would be ideal for the strips and 1/4" adhesive strips instead of liquid glue would solve the problem of accidentally gluing pages together. I want to make specialized books with assorted types of paper. As an example, I want to make a book for swatches of different media (such as colored pencils, markers, artist crayons, water colors, gouache, acrylics, colored ink pens, etc) with specialized signatures of the different types of paper I generally use (or plan to experiment with), like drawing paper, water color paper, marker paper, card stock (possibly multiple brands and weights), mixed media, pastel (the art medium, not color value), vellum, Bristol, Canson Mi-Teintes, toned (including pastels, craft and black), Yupo, charcoal and other textured paper, stone paper, etc. it might have to be a series of journals since I can think of at least 15 different types of paper and I’m sure I would add more in the future. Another idea is to make a travel journal with journals of the various types of paper.

I’m going to make an accordion one next. But I did do another that was sewn and I couldn’t get it tight enough so ended up gluing using a flexible glue. Worked good.

Can you do or (have you done) a follow up on how it held up? Recently I used almost the same method while trying to use up my thin xuan paper. Super fast and easy to make! But they didn’t hold well because I used water soluble glue and my cat knocked down my paint water on it. I’m looking to try again but with different paper as adhesive strips and proper pva glue. Hinge tape or book repair tape are not available in my country currently. I don’t know when similar items might be in stock… Seeing someone else also use this “method” was really interesting, thank you for making this video! I subscribed to your channel

This is an awesome idea! Maybe you could put wax paper between each signature as ypur working to try and keep the pages from gluing together? Ypur definitely brave to start on good paper lol. I'd try on super duper cheap paper lol but thanks for doing this for us! I thought of using rubber bands to keep signatures together and then 1 for it to stay all together. I did this idea for my kids when they needed a "sketchbook" for art class during quarantine ( it was the art teachers idea). I think it would work better with watercolor paper because cheap printer paper was a pain because the rubber bands were strong even though I used ones that werent that strong and much bigger than I thought could be used. It caused the sketchbook to bend and be weird so I had to add a lot of paper in order for that not to happen. Maybe you could use washi tape or something similar to cover the copy paper to help keep that paper dry while painting? Just throwing some ideas out there. Anyway, have a great day!

I found a plastic tape that worked well. Also tried velum as it was included with another paper in the lining and worked. I’ll bet you can also use yupo paper.

I found a really neat cold pressed sketchbook block kind of combo on Ali express. It’s sewn in like a sketchbook then it’s blocked in on the three sides. You undo one page at a time like a block but it stays together like a sketchbook and it’s 100% cold pressed cotton paper. Just a thought and it’s baohong.
