    On this page there are A LOT of questions from people who have punched a wall and hurt their fists and knuckles. Some broke bones.
    The questions are from wall punchers who hurt themselves very recently and are worried about their hand pain and what it means, to those who punched a wall and hurt themselves years ago and are wondering why they still hurt and have troubles making a fist and what they can do about it.
    Rule #1 of Punching Walls And Other Hard Objects: Don't Do It
    Rule #2: When you hurt your hand punching a wall/door/car/tree/etc, you better do your best to help your body recover as much and as fast as possible.

    i’m going to talk to a hand specialist to see what they can do, since my doctor was persistent that my hand looked normal in the x-rays. although i would love to get my hand back to its normal form, i know the only actual way to do that is surgery. hoping i don’t need surgery or injections or anything to get relief.

    For me, it's a combination of wall punching and pushups.
    To be fair, I tried to hold back and do so softly-as well as pick hollow walls (mostly). But I won't lie and say I wasn't mad sometimes and tested denser ones.
    Pain has settled in the pinky's side of the wrist, flairs when I rotate it and even more so when flipping an object in my hand. I can actually pop it by squeezing it with my other thumb, but that might have come from me just doing so out of habit.
    Been like this for over a week, ant to get back to push ups. Considering waiting two more weeks while continuing to stretch it, and putting some ice on it.

    I punched a marble wall about 1.5 years ago with both hands. I hit the wall with pretty much everything I had and threw a good 4 punches with each hand before the pain became too much. Fast forward to now and all the fingers on my right hand are slanted to a very noticeable degree. While my left hand isn’t as bad. Will this cause any future complications? Do I need surgery to fix it? Are there any therapy exercises I can do to keep the little dexterity I have left in my fingers?

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 2 lety

      Will it cause future complications? Depends on what exactly the situation is. Did you restructure your hand(s) in such a way that there's ongoing inflammation/swelling/joint compression etc that will lead to future pain and some amount of (joint) deformation?
      May not have said that very well, but what I"m trying to say is that with your hand restructured the way it currently is, there's a spectrum with from 'no future problems' to 'lots of future pain and problem'.
      I'm not an expert on the surgical aspects, but I doubt it can be fixed (back to normal, or normal shape), and the damage that would be done trying to fix in on small structures....probably wouldn't be pretty. Again, i'm not the expert on that, wouldn't hurt to have a hand surgeon take a look....but I'd bet a dollar he'd take a look and say something along the lines "it's not worth the risk (normal surgery risks, plus making matters worse) and pain/recovery time post-surgery".

    tip: Ice. It helps low down the pain, it faster the healing and helps with inflamation. If you use pins/ made a surgery, ask for a doctor to help with It, and have patience. After one month, start taking weak punches to sand, for about 2 months. It Will cause minor fracture if done correctly, and the body will make a protective bone layer for it

    • @TendonitisExpert

    Hello, I recently broke both of my 5th metacarpal bones in both hands due to a boxing class, I defeated my opponent but ended up breaking my hands. When the dr got the X-rays he told me I don’t need a closed reduction and/or surgery I put in a cast then a splint, fast forward 6 weeks I just took off my splints and at first I wasn’t feeling or seeing my knuckles, now I do just I don’t see them like before kind of like sunken, but they’re improving in appearance. Im now starting to see and feel the bones at my pinky knuckle/metacarpal bone, I don’t know if it will be like before or if I need to give it more time to fully see it like before. Also my other knuckles (third and fourth on right hand) seem a little tilted I don’t know if this is because of how the splint was squeezed on them or if they dislocated a little. The dr told me nothing on the X-ray shows that. When I make a fist it hurts me, and feels stiff I guess because it just healed but not fully solid yet. My question is, will my pinky knuckles every show again when I make a full fist? And will my other knuckles straighten again or will I need to put certain stresses on them to align them again? (They’re not that tilted, you can’t see it with the naked eye, im just a little detailed) I’m not even sure if they titled or if they just look bigger at an angle, however I feel my hands got stronger and my knuckles look slightly bigger. The dr told me I can be back at boxing again in 4 month after full recovery.

      1. I don't know what things will look like in the future. As a general statement, they'll never be the same (depending on what damage was done...) 2. Pinkie on both hands, ouch. 3. Hand(s) can be mishapen after being in cast if things were pushed into a weird shape. Maybe probably go back to normal but you may have to do some work to open up the shrunken (tightened up sheets of connective tissue) so it -can- go back to it's original shape. Time will tell a bit on that one. 4. Were you wearing the big boxing gloves?

      @TendonitisExpert how are you doing sir? Thank you for your reply, I didn’t reply back to you because I don’t have notifications to let me know. So it’s been a month since I told you, my knuckles now look good as new or better, however the 5th knuckles on both hands (where I had my metacarpal fractures) still not showing like the rest of the other knuckles next to them. The left one looks much better and is starting to appear, not so much with the right hand because I had a bigger fracture there, it’s showing better than a month ago, when I make a fist, it’s still a little swollen, and the knuckle bone is not showing completely. I’ll just have to wait and see. My concern now is for my 5th pinky knuckles to show when I make a fist. And no I was not wearing those big boxing gloves when I was punching my opponent all over the place. I’m not a professional boxer yet. I just started. That’s the main reason how I broke both of my 5th metacarpals in both hands.

      If it fractured, that's bad. If you dislocated the knuckle, that's probably bad, depending. If something else like a rip or tear happened, that's bad. Depending on how bad it ends up hurting, that could be bad, or not bad but painful, depending. If it just hurts with no actual injury, that's not so bad aside from that it obviously hurts.

    Hello! Thanks for the video, just had a quick question: I didnt punch a wall, I punched a very hard Heavy Bag without my gloves / wraps and I connected with poor form, now I have sharp pain anytime my 5th metacarpal is moved(pain might be between 5th and 4th metacarpal), however I can basically move all my fingers normally, even making a fist doesnt hurt anymore. Its been close to 6 weeks with some improvement, but my question is, is there a chance I tore something without knowing? Or would that be very obvious? Only loss of motion I have is when I make a fist, I have a very hard time extending my ring finger, though the finger moves normally otherwise. There is also pain inbetween my 4th and 5th metacarpal if I put too much pressure on my thumb.
    There was no bruising, and if there was swelling, it was a very small amount. Also, it looks like the knuckle of the ring finger MIGHT be slightly sunken, like its just barely smaller than the one on my right. Would appreciate some advice 😅

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 5 lety

      1. So you dont have any reduced ability to make a fist, but it hurts when you do? True/False
      2. It hurts when you move it how much? A lot/A little When you move it how?
      3. How sharp a pain, how intense, how long does it last?

    • @flintrocks
      @flintrocks Před 5 lety

      @@TendonitisExpert
      1. False. No reduced ability. No pain when making a fist. Slight pain when squeezing my fist, this pain used to be much worst.
      2. Pain is very sharp, only when I move it and my ring finger together. By that I mean, when my pinky and ring finger are pressed together, and I try to bend/extend my pinky, I get severe pain along my 5th metacarpal starting at the knuckle. When my fingers are spread out, I can bend my pinky with no pain. It also hurts in the same area when I pull up my pants with my thumb.
      3. The pain is quite sharp, only when I move it in the ways described, or if something presses on the knuckle. It goes away instantly. The pain is sharp, but also feels tight, if that makes sense.
      The worst pain is when I try to keep my pinky and ring fingers aligned, and bend them. Sharp pain. No pain at rest

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 5 lety

      1. Ok good to know. 2. and 3. More details make a more clear picture, thanks.
      Ok so your probable scenario is this: You have a small tiny tear in there somewhere. You can have those pains without one, but either way, you have the pain you have. If you do have a small tiny tear there's really nothing to do about it, medically. Maybe a surgeon would say something else, but in general the structures are so small and the tear so small...there's nothing surgery can do do help...things are so small can't reconnect them, surgery would do more damage than is already there, etc.
      You could get an MRI or equivalent and see what a doctor says, etc....but unless you're a pro boxer or something...it's unlikely to be worth the effort and the likelihood is that it would be a lot of effort/cost just to hear that there's nothing they can do but put you in a splint and hope the pain goes away, etc.
      That's just kind of the reality of it....it's not so bad a doctor is even going to bother investigating because unless your knuckle is half ripped off there's really nothing they (or anybody) can do for it . That is an exaggeration of course but you get the point.
      So.
      1. Ice dip as described on here/my site in various places. This decreases pain and increases circulation etc. Increase healing times to whatever degree. (May or may not not even be anything to heal, depending on what exactly tore or if anything tore).
      2. Keep things moving. Don't splint the hand. DOn't overdo it, but keep fingers/fist moving. THis is very good in a variety of ways.
      3. Shadow box. Speed bags maybe depending. Heavy bag with other hand.
      4. Give it a month, then check back in and let me know how things are. (Even if ice dipping reduces pain and/or your pain goes away fast, don't hit with that hand for a month. Just because you don't feel pain doesn't mean your hand is ready/able to withstand impact again.)

      @@TendonitisExpert Thanks for the answer doc. Have to say was really hoping it wasnt a tear, I honestly thought I just fractured it. Im not a pro boxer or anything, but I do like to box to work out and for self defense training. Is there a chance I will ever be able to hit with my left hand again? I can deal with the pain, id just like to be able to use my left hand like I did before. What do you think tore, ligament, tendon, or is it impossible to tell?
      In 1 month should I just contact you here in the comments, or is there some better way? Also, I notice that sometimes it can be worst when I wake up, should I wrap it or anything when I sleep?

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 5 lety

      Yes high likelihood can hit again etc. When you start back into it, start real light and over a couple weeks build up slowly. If there's an edge (as in, push the edge), creep up on it don't blast past it and suddenly have a bunch of pain again.
      You may not have an actual tear. Could have just overstretched some supportive connective tissue, that would hurt bad. Or that sheet could have a full or partial tear. Lots of little stuff in there, hard to tell. PROBABLY not a big future problem, just from what you've described. Having said that let whatever there is heal before going back at it, for a lot of reasons.
      Might not even have any overstretch etc. Coulda just done whatever and it hurts with no actual damage. Verly likely there's at least microtears. Point being, it's PROBABLY not a big future problem.
      It's way less likely that you have a fracture. Certainly possible, but in general from how you described the hit, symptoms would be way worse if you'd hit it wrong enough to fracture bone.. Again, no downsides to getting it visualized with xray and/or mri other than $ cost. Same advice if there's a fracture. Let it heal.
      ALmost certainly not tendon, possibly small small ligament or any of various bits of connective tissue throughout the area.
      Comments here is good/fine, can use the contact form on the site too if you want.

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 2 lety

      Well, you may have interior joint lining damage from the impact. Or, the interior joint lining is inflammed/swollen, and thus the tissue is grinding on itself (more likely than actual damage.....but can cause damage and/or ongoing irritation and swelling.) (Might be more of a 'squeaking' than a 'scraping'....but probably not a lot of difference between the two.
      Primary goal is to decrease inflammation as much as possible as fast as possible.

    I am probably really dumb for doing this but I live in a college dorm and I play a lot of NBA 2k. Basically, almost every time I played it I would end up getting extremely mad after an hour or two and I sat close to the wall so I would punch it. The first time I did this it hurt pretty bad as you can imagine but the game made me so mad I couldn't help it. Since then I have probably punched the wall 40-50times (I get really mad) and my knuckles have definitely taken a new shape. Note the wall is block so I'm doing no damage to it and it's doing all of the damage to me. The most I have punched the wall in succession is about 6 times with each hand. After doing that many punches I was barely able to open my hands for the next two days and they were extremely swollen and purple. The tenderness took about 2 months to go away and I have since quit playing the game for obvious reasons but my knuckles instead of becoming mangled and deformed looking are actually, for the most part, regular but I'd definitely say that they have doubled or tripled in size. The last time I remember punching the wall I was able to hit it 3 times rapidly at about 80% whilst causing little pain to my right hand at least. The reason I am typing this is that one of the last times I punched the wall a sharp pain shot through my middle left knuckle. It has been about 2 months since I have had this happen and now I am unable to punch anything at about 20%+ with that knuckle without causing immense pain(the pain is kinda similar to hitting your funny bone but hurts much more). I want to know if I could have caused irreversible damage and I will have to live with this sensitive knuckle for the rest of my life or if it's just something that takes a really long time to heal. My right knuckle is crazy strong and hard now though which is kinda cool and I can pretty much punch anything I want with little pain as I am pretty sure I desensitized it significantly and I feel no restrictions or weakness when I open and close my hands and my sensitive knuckle is really my only con. Sorry for writing a whole book but any input would be helpful.

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 5 lety +1

      Desinsitization (local nerve damage, techinically), yes. Yes absolutely you could have caused irreversible damage. Hopefully nerve is just being compressed from inflammation swelling and that will subside when the swelling does. YOu could have broken/fractured bone. Repeated wall punching can make bone bigger and stronger...but then it causes crumbling (basically)
      That's awesome you have full ability to open/close hands, that's a huge plus with such an increase in size.
      Punching soft inanimate objects you put against a brick wall is not dumb and a great way to channel bursts of anger as described (with little to no self punishment/damage). From this point forward, however punching a brick wall is officially dumb.

      Knuckle pushups should be fine. That's worse on skin than anything else.

      It's your hand, your knuckle structures. Go for it! :)

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 5 lety

      Well sure you can still fight with it...though it may hurt a lot (depending on the current state of your knuckles). You won't lose punch impact per se, though the more the knuckles hurt, the less your brain will be willing to punch and the less often you will consciously want to be punching.

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 5 lety

      Knuckle structures are soft cartilage. It sounds like you destroyed the structural integrity of that cartilage, so now it's 'soft'. This isn't the best analogy, but kind of like plastic bubble wrap. It has a certain 'stiff' structureal integrity, and then you pop all the bubbles and then you have a bunch of loose material. The smashed knuckle is a lot like that..it's 'soft' because the tiny structural bubbles were popped and now it's 'loose'.
      Unfortunately, that's permanent. Meaning, it's not going to heal back to it's original shape/structure/density. There's a small possibility of that as you're young etc, but in general...I wouldn't be holding your breath for it's return.
      You'd have to talk to a surgeon about possibilities there. My guess is that there's nothign a surgeon can (or will) do for you...maybe that ligament can be repaired/reconnected, but there's nothing they can do (that I know of) that can restore that knuckle to a 'I can punch as hard as I want' state.
      I'd love to be wrong about that, and if there's a good way I'm happy to learn about it.

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 5 lety

      " I really want to get into boxing " You definitely can. BUT, you have to be smart. No macho bullshit. You learn and practice the skills. You practice the coordination, the speed, the explosiveness, etc, you DO NOT practice hitting the heavy bag as hard as you can with just wraps on (though you probably can with the big gloves on).
      If you're going to be competitive you're going to have big gloves on in the ring. If you're doing MMA, I wouldn't train on a heavy bag (speed and coordination yes, power no) with the mma gloves, big gloves only (because you're going for longevity).
      You don't punch a wall ever again. Bare knuckle fighing would be a bad idea (for all the reasons it is) because if you hit that bad knuckle just right on a skull or a cheekbone or a tooth...you're going to be very unhappy about that.
      Do what you gotta do on the streets, of course (by which I mean, don't get into a fist fight), but as a general rule hard object impacts on that knuckle are going to result in exponentially worse outcomes. YOu did say you've hit walls since then, so maybe you didn't hit that knuckle, or you did and you survived it pretty well, but in general...avoid that at all costs.

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 5 lety

      " I've also been having this sensation to want to pull my finger to crack the bone an kinda pop it back into place releasing that fluid that's inside the knuckle" That's happening for one ore more of a few reasons, including internal inflammation/swelling, and definitely due to forearm muscle that turn into tendon and attach to the finger being too tight and thus compressing the finger joints, so that unhappy joint is constantly getting compressed a little bit more than it's happy with.
      "but my knuckle has been making progress every since that day it almost feels normal " Well that's a good thing. Maybe there is hope. In which case, I'd definitely read the thread/page the link under this video points to, and, for instance, ice dip like a crazy man for a week and tell me what happens.
      " I will still do my best to conditioning it " If by that you mean 'toughen up the knuckle by hitting it against objects'....that's a bad idea. Increase your protein/collagen intake, yes. Smash the knuckle against a wall with mild to moderate force...personally I wouldn't.

      Idiot fracture. Lol, that's my new favorite name for something!
      3 months isn't that long after an injury like yours, you're lookking at minimally 6-12 months, presuming you can heal to a pain free state, which you -probably- can. Fractures heal, the tenderness takes a long time to go away for various reasons. Depending on the deformities and whether your joint function and/or interior surfaces are affected, a pain free state is or isn't attainable.

And what should I do from here to attempt to get it fixed if that’s even possible? I’ve never regretted an action so much in my life and I’m ashamed to contact the doctors out of embarrassment and fear of judgement

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 3 lety

      Impact caused fracture...AND bone/joint bruising of hand and possibly wirst, and pain kicked in tendonitis dynamic of progressive tightness, inflammation process, and nutritional lack.
      Possible damage elsewhere in the hand from the impact...but likely it's just the predictable changes to the ecology of the area that result. Basically, tightness (compresses joints thus the clicking) and pain.

    • @TendonitisExpert

      Walls are harder than your body is. It might be ok now, but it only goes one direction....badly. Sooner or later.
      Maybe you can get away with minimal downsides if you do it 'carefully' and condition slowly and never hit anything too hard, but chances are, you think you're conditioned, so you're going to hit hard things harder than you should and then....

      Skin is just superficial, it's rarely a problem (other that rip/tear/cut/bruise/etc).
      If there's no pain, you've (probably) killed the nerves, so no sensation of pain etc.. No bloody knuckles....skin has presumably toughened up, and/or you hit dead on (versus with some shear which causes cut/tear).

      Depending on what it look like in there, it's possible surgery can reattach (less likely a year later, but maybe). Otherwise, there's nothing to do except get the inflammation out (ice dipping) and hope it stays out. PResumably things have healed as much as they're going to by now...perhaps movement of the tendon etc is constantly irritating/aggravating things in there.

    But the soft cartilage within your fists is a hold back it prevents you from making your fist stronger right???

    • @TendonitisExpert
      @TendonitisExpert  Před 4 lety +1

      That implies like 'a stronger fist' that can, for instance, happily punch a steel/concrete object, is an attainable thing.
      I guess technically the answer is 'yes, the soft cartilage is damagable so you can't make the fist itself stronger'. But, if the cartilage isn't there, it's not like your fist would be able to get stronger/able to happily punch walls with no downsides....

Palm the shit out of your wall instead. Or you can condition your knuckles so next time it won’t do so much damage.
