i already know i will get a lot of negative feed back for my views and comments, but I love mocking birds and cardinals , i love rabbits and squirrels in my yard i have many bird feeders and have baby rabbits in my yard, i love most animals but i absolutely hate every thing about stupid cats. I really hate people that dump cats out in the wild and let them multiply and wreck havoc on all the native wildlife, i fn hate people that let their darn worthless murdering cats run loose day and night murdering baby birds. birds right out of the nest have no chance to escape cats. CATS DO NOT BELONG IN OUR ECOSYSTEM. also, there are 400 BILLION birds in the world, and the cats only kill about 3 million of them.. that’s *LESS* then *0.1%* if you do the right math... and even if you’re not good at math, you could really just simply search it up..

I think so too, the contestant has to be easily suggestible. Derren kept pounding the table, and clicking his pen, imitating the sounds and gestures of pushing the button. So it wasn't just negative suggestion.
Here's an idea I didn't see mentioned in the comments. Perhaps, he convinced her that the cat would be electrocuted if she did not push the button. All of the distractions served to confuse her and by the time she's left alone she can't remember if the button kills the cat or prevents it from being killed. Countdowns are usually associated with something imminent and negative. In the final moments she's forced to make a decision about what she thought she heard. It's hard to pay attention when the stakes are high. A follow-up interview would have been interesting.
Agreed. It's likely there was some suggestion / hypnosis before she entered the room where he firmly inplants in her mind that she is to press the button at one second. He may have even said to ignore everything else once she enters the room. All this other stuff then becomes misdirection. It's a classic Derren trick to tell/suggest to the audience the method is one thing (clicking the pen, regression to childhood etc) when in reality it's something different. Film it a few times with different people and select the one it worked best with.

I'm sorry, I don't fully understand why she had the urge to push the button. I get that the power of suggestion is powerful, but it has its limits. You can't use suggestion to make person to do something that they are morally against doing. The girl clearly liked the kitten, so I don't see what made her disregard it.
I was trying my best to play along and put myself in the place of her, but the only thing I could see that would manipulate me might be the timer, since it would trigger urgency, but I couldn't understand what else would make her want to push the button.
At first, I thought he was using subliminal messaging through sound, but apparently there wasn't anything like that at play.

I know about the tendency to think about the things you're trying to avoid thinking about (something like the ironic process theory, I dunno), but once it comes to hurting others or _doing_ something in general, I can't see why it is so hard not to! Thinking about something is waaay less controllable than actually doing it. Doing (or not doing) something is much easier to control. And I don't think that the clicking of the pen, the slamming on the table, the authoritative vibe, etc. are enough motives to do that.
Darren brown is an actual genius. He knows how to get in your head, and let the curiosity get the better of you. My god, what a fucked up show. (But in a good way.)

The actual trick is convincing the audience that any of this is real.
0:20 "when you press this button, it electrocutes the kitten". notice he says "WHEN you press this button", not "if". just 20 seconds in he's already putting ideas into her head about pressing it.
and at 0:35: "your job is to try not to press the button." the word "try" implies probable failure and that the default outcome is pressing it.
EDIT: holy cow it gets worse. 0:46: "if you don't... *slaps table* kill the kitten." this is a pattern interrupt followed by an embedded command, both techniques from NLP. slapping the table for no apparent reason induces confusion and suggestibility in her, which he follows up with the words "kill the kitten". because those words are so detached from the beginning of the sentence by the pause and the table hit it's interpreted as a direct command by the subconscious.

Today I was using a ladder to keep a manual garage door up. Next to it was a regular garage door with those sensors at the bottom for use with a garage opener. As I was taking away the ladder to shut the manual door the ladder swing over nearly hitting one of the sensors that lines up to another one on the opposite side. Since it missed I mentally thought, thank goodness, if it bumped the sensor the other door will be messed up and as soon as I thought that the ladder swing over again bumping that very sensor! In reality he convinced her that the goal was to press the button without the cat dying without ever saying it. The result was that she ran out of time and options and felt that she had to press it and hope. This is less about "be careful focusing on bad things" and more about seeing past the problems put in front of you.
