Use scrabble letters for them to arrange their vocabulary words with or stack styrofoam cups with the letters on them! Love this!

We sometimes do a spelling "bee" on the stairs. Each time they spell a word correctly they can step up one step. If they make it to the top before I run out of words they get a piece of candy. If we didn't get to all they words we can use the remaining ones in a new game that day or another day.
    Also... Hangman! So fun!
Thanks for the inspiration! I am definitely snagging some of yours. ☺

Love your teacher tips. What works for my 1st grader is reading her spelling words then writing them one time Monday-Thursday and spelling the word with her magnet letters which I prepare ahead for her. We underline two letter sounds to help her remember them, and I write those on the top of her paper as well and go over them. On Friday she can figure out how to spell them usually, and if she struggles I give her cues to help her figure it out. When she was in Kindergarten, I would use bottle water caps with letters on them and I would use an index card with 1-3 lid circles on them and I would ask her to sound off the word to figure out how to spell it and place the letter lids where they belong.

My daughter loves to write her words in sidewalk chalk then erase them with water balloons. We also have a spelling tree where she writes the words on leaves and decorates the tree. We do a different activity everyday then do the test on Friday. She typically has them down by the end of the week and she is in 2nd grade.

Things clicked when we learned based on syllables by using cursive we separate the words in those syllables. We just do it when we introduce it for the first time. Then “Say Spell Say.” We also use the picture word on index. Thank you for video! I plan to use rainbow+5-4-3-pre test... I think it would help motivate

Hi Mandy, you're amazing. Love the pretest on Thursday and if she misses she takes a retest on Friday. Love it. We're taking this one. What we do is from Monday to Thursday she has to learn the word, look it up in the dictionary to learn the meaning because what does it help to spell it right and not even know what it means so she does that and then on Friday we take the test and what we do is while I say the word and she writes it down, we make up sentences with that word to kind of rehash everything we've learned in the week. My daughter loves it. Thank you for the pretest idea. Love from sunny South Africa.

My boys hate writing.. letter tiles and or letter magnets are great. So for mine.. we have letter magnets that came with an organizer so it’s easy to find the letter they need, when they need to write the spelling word in their workbook I instead say that I will let them use the magnets as long as they say the word, spell the word, say the word.. and then they put a check mark where the word would go.

@@mamawarriorprincessdaughte797 that sounds amazing! I never did this trick in the end! But I did try scribble spellings, where you scribble draw gaps and do the spellings in the cavities you make. Such a relief from 5 months ago my daughter can magically read and spell and write. I think it's a development thing.

Cursive takes time, for sure. My son was the same when I took him out of public school. I'd shoot for no longer than 15 minutes a day, and make sure to give lots of encouragement. My youngest started cursive in first grade, and now in 4th grade, he has better handwriting than me. My oldest struggled in this area, but it's gotten better each year. It took quite a while though, because he was never taught cursive in school, so he started late. Lots of praise, encouragement, and practice.

    Hi there, Mandy!
Great video; I made it to the end! :)
In our family, my wife’s (2) x sisters are both teachers.
…in recent discussion with one of them, she had mentioned how she believes my invented product (US Patent Pending) TI’TAINS card holders/connectors could be used as a bit of a teaching/learning/educational aid-essentially holding/displaying flash cards (with letters, etc), where they can be manipulated-for spelling, etc purposes.
If you’d be interested-and, think you could/would use them with your kiddos-I’d LOVE to send you some samples of them!
