Southern Railway 154 Steam Train

- The Three Rivers Rambler is a tourist train that runs out of Knoxville, Tennessee. In August of 2015, I joined a special photography event featuring the railroad’s Southern Railway number 154 steam locomotive. The 154 is the oldest operating Southern Railway locomotive, built by the Schenectady Locomotive Works in 1890. For the event, 154 was cosmetically modified to resemble locomotive 78 of the Tallulah Falls Railway, which ran between Cornelia, Georgia and Franklin, North Carolina. We will now travel to Knoxville, Tennessee to pay a visit to the Three Rivers Rambler.

Not only is the locomotive itself legendary but the whistle it wears is too. An original Southern Railway Top-Lever 5 Chime. Those are exceedingly rare, even more than the Top-Lever 6 Chimes from my understanding.

That was a great re-enactment. All the cars, passenger and rail, were so clean. Although, it was kinda strange those cars coming from under a freeway underpass!

That must be one of those rare Southern Railway 5 chime whistles on 154. I could tell that by the lever on top that’s only present on Southern Railway’s whistles, with one exception for the Central of Georgia 6 chime.

I think dynamic braking only works with electric traction motors?

That's right, it's a different system. The traction motors are essentially used as brakes.
