Upgrade Addiction is a very serious thing, I have it…
And I love it 😍 keep them upgrade’s coming 🎉🎉
😂 HUGE pause there. I was like, damn this he’s right 😞 …But I definitely love upgrading my bike. It’s like the bikes speaking to me and I just know it deserves to look and ride better.
You really put some work in on this experiment. Nicely done!
Thank you! I got a few small upgrades left. Then N9 is ready tit air over the world 🌎 lol BUT seriously 😳
Sweet vid Jared! Luvd the half donut in the leaves when you got back to the truck 🕺🎉 2 weeks ago i upgraded to 165mm cranks on my M/L Trek Fuel EX 9.7. Took a few rides to get the secret sauce with saddle height adjustments but WOW a noticeable difference: yes, less pedal strikes but the control/play on downhills is epic & im logging longer rides and sticking with the pack & most importantly the knees are much happier 💥🚀 and yes…Oil Slick pedals would look delish on your rig. Keep the vids coming. 💪🏻
Thanks for the feedback man. I’m definitely looking at some oil slick pedals for this rig 😂
Honest review, well done 👍🏾
Thanks man 👍
On my enduro Ebike I'm running 160mm cranks and it feels really nice compared to 170mm cranks on my normal bike. So im gonna have to say that shorts cranks do make a huge difference in comfort, stance and stability on the bike no BS!
For sure!
My e-bike came with 165mm cranks and I remember thinking how good it felt downhill and cornering.
Not my Polygon N9 feels even better downhill with the 165s on it 🤘
Great review. 165 on my trail bike. And 170 on my XC bike are the perfect set up.
Awesome 👍 After riding these, I would definitely have 170 on an XC bike.
I like the short cranks for a e bike or DH bike but for a pedal bike. For my 170 enduro pedal bike I prefer the longer pedals as it is way easier to climb as you have so much more power. Shorter cranks especially like 155 length are not so great for climbing on a pedal bike. I really like 5 Dev. I absolutely love Polygon.
I definitely felt like what you’re talking about in the climb. Maybe a 30 tooth chainring will help 🤷🏼♂️
@@JaredHoff Yeah for sure.
I think climbs (and acceleration out of a dig) are better with longer cranks because longer cranks (or any pipe or shaft) will certainly allow for more torque output. Shorter cranks would theoretically have more power output (helps maintain a higher speed).
Love your channel Jared! I did a lot of similar upgrades to my fuel ex 7 that you did to yours. I used a lot of your tips and I now have a pretty nice set up that i would put up against even the carbon fuel ex models in aspects of performance and value.
Have you considered reviewing mtb accessories or clothing? or getting a new go pro haha and maybe film a riding trip somewhere?
Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the feedback 👍 Im always looking for more video ideas. It just takes so long to film and edit these. I think I need to hire a filmer and editor 😂
@@JaredHoff I loved this episode it was pretty entertaining, I don't want to sound negative but reviews are overdone I like your format because you really experience the products for yourself that's what relatable, keep it real as they say 🤘
Interesting test
Thanks 👍
I just went from 170 > 165 with very positive results. I am running XT so was a $155 upgrade. Definitely notice less strain on my knees, easier to spin up and added trail clearance. 5 Dev comes out with super short cranks with all kinds of charts and now everyone thinks they need 155 cranks. Just beware of the marketing going on.
Definitely marketing going on. You did the smart thing by just buying shorter XT cranks 👍
Thanks for including at 15:33 commentary as you run back 😂
I try to keep it real. It’s hard to capture how much work goes into solo filming 😂
@@JaredHoff I bet, keep it up
6ft exactly, 34" cycling inseam (with shoes on), more on the XC side of XC / Trail rider. Been running 175mm cranks since I first got into the sport ten years ago but have been getting some knee problems these days so decided to try 170mm. I haven't needed to downsize my chainring (still on a 32t) but definitely have to be in a lower gear on climbs and I can certainly feel the loss of torque despite the fact it's only supposed to be 3% loss by going from 175mm to 170mm. Downhill and on the flats though I would regularly spin out on the 10t on my SRAM Eagle setup with the 175s whereas now I'm a cog or two higher up the cassette. Knee feels much better but I do miss the torque. Not beating any Strava PRs for climbs any more despite putting in the same effort.
Awesome! Great info, great comment, thank you for adding value 👍
Got the same mod planned on my touring bike. Rode 45 years on 170mm cranks. Got touring bike with 175mm square taper 46-30 chain wheels. It doesn't feel natural. Track bike with 165mm cranks 8500 miles. Getting 170mm 2 part cranks with 44-28 rings. 3 birds with one stone! As you get older, those hips will thank you for short cranks. They also allow for a noticeably more aero position on the bike. If I go faster than 25mph, I'll probably be coasting anyway especially on a loaded touring bike! Brake upgraded first. Also the bike has a very low bottom bracket.
Sounds like you got a good setup. Makes all the difference 👍
Near 60 here and still strong , I had raced road when young so I'm a smooth operator, 175s I just pushed for off road, my 100- 120 spin was doable. For just labor had a 170mm specialized crankset swap. That's roughly 3.5 % difference in circumference. Big help even sprinting and I bet it's better for knees too.
Awesome 👍 I’m pretty happy with my 165s on my enduro bike,,, but would go 170s if I had an XC bike.
@@JaredHoff yep I'm 5'10" and 30.5 inseam and I can turn rpm, I think you might be ok if 6' 2" with 175s but I think the old road bikes were 167s..?
I tried going from 170 to 165 but didn’t like the narrowing of my stance when standing, so went back to 170’s.
I don’t have issues with pedal strikes so it was really an exercise in curiosity with all the recent “shorter cranks are better” noise
Got to do what’s right for you 👍
😂 there’s no way you felt a 10mm difference in your stance
That's why it's easiest and cheapest to swap for the same brand cranks. My Slash has X1 Eagle 175mm, so I just ordered a GX 165mm crankset (with chain ring already on it) for only $260 on sale!
Most definitely 👍
😂 at 19:02 kids are funny, I’m glad you didn’t redo that part!
I almost cut it out, but glad I left it in as well 😂
I'm 6'2" so luckily I can run 175 no problem. I tried 170 on my new bike build though and they feel nice. Idk if I'd want to go shorter though.
I’m 6’2” as well, but don’t have the longest legs so 165 felt great going downhill, BUT I still need to get my saddle set right and maybe a 30t chainring to help with the uphill.
Apart from the chainring I mentioned, I don't think you need to upgrade anything else! Well maybe you can try out different tyres like Continental or Schwalbe.
I’ve never tried Continental 🤔 But I love the Pirelli tires I have on there with the Rear Specific tire in the back.
@@JaredHoff Fair enough, stick with what you like! I don't think there's much further you can go with your bike. Maybe you can get a full fork/shock service (they're never great from the factory) and upgrade all the bearings!
You could probably get cheaper black cranks and if you want that silver colour look get a silver chainring that's a more budget friendly option but still makes the bike look better.
next upgrade custom painted fork lowers silver.
like the pike ultimate colour
I love the silver lowers on the pike ultimate
Since I pedal a lot (no bike parks with shuttles around me), I'm going to try 185mm cranks next 😎
That would be interesting. Better pedal feeling maybe, BUT what about rock strikes? I think there’s a happy medium. Maybe that’s why most bikes have 170 🤔
@@JaredHoff Yeah, you'd have to compensate with a higher BB, which is whose a higher-BB frame for my next build :)
I'm currently painting various parts from my trance x with purple triple glitter paint and I'm feeling inspired to drill a couple of holes through my SX cranks like we used to do in the 1990's. Wonder how close I can come to the 5devs in weight, for 80$ 😂
😂
Nice, I haven't seen drillium cranks before. Sprockets, levers, derailleurs yes, but not cranks.
It'll be great, what's the worst that could happen? Post vid.
im 6 feet and went from 175mm to 170mm to 165mm. And it was better each time. I didn't feel any differences in climbs. Clearance is superior and have way more control of the bike in the decents.
Downhill descents on 165 is where it’s at. Did you go to a small chain ring?
@@JaredHoff No im still running a 32tooth. Reseached smaller chainring and apparently will increase the effects of pedal kickback. For 165mm cranks I feel like my legs spin in the right zone. But i guess arguarbly im probably in an easier gear compared to 170 or 175 when pedalling aroung. I would say i got used to it every quickly even in the 51 tooth.
I’m 5’8” and ride a med bike with 175mm cranks. I ordered 160mm Canfield cranks. I’ll try to stick with my 32t oval chainring when they arrive next week. If not I already have a 30t oval ready to go.
After having to pedal on a dead batt. on my Orbea Rise, I REALLY want to swap out the 165s for 170s like my pedal bike.
I could definitely feel a difference in the pedaling efficiency, BUT the downhill bike control was worth it for me.
For me 170 causes knee pain on XC and trail bike, I have to go with 175. I hate spinning so always pushing harder gear, and that puts a extra stress on the knee with the shorter crankset. On roadbike 170 I feel Ok. It is a little easier to maintain a little extra cadence , but also there I had once a 172,5 witch I think felt the best.
I hear ya! I could definitely feel that it was a little harder to pedal uphill with these shorter cranks. Wish I could try a 30t chain ring
@@JaredHoff Get an AbsoluteBlack oval chainring - I push a 170mm crank arm and I'm 6'5". No knee pain at all.
maybe suspension fine tune with tokens or handlebar with diffrent bend angles?
Some good options 👍
I paid $150 for some race face cranks that are 10 mm shorter than my original cranks. The only thing I notice is less pedal strikes.
You did it the smart way. It spent wayyy too much on these even at the discounted price I got.
there are plenty of 160mm gxp bolt style crankset with 24mm Shimano spindle in Aliexpress
I wouldn’t trust Ali express cranks for serious downhill mountain biking, but that just me. Got to do what you feel is right for you.
@@JaredHoff there's this Rotor brand from Spain. With separate cranks and spindle, but maybe only down to 165mm. you can choose 24mm Shimano or 30mm axle to match your bottom bracket.
remember the frame on Santa cruz change ))
I wish I had a Santa Cruz frame to test out. Maybe one day
I’m 5’8” and have the stock 175 mm on my pivot trail 429. It’s gotta be a no brainer for me to go shorter, but how short? I was thinking about 165, but now I’m thinking maybe shorter…
It’s hard to say for sure, but after trying out the 165s I realize that I wouldn’t want any shorter on my size XL bike at 6’2”.
I think 165 is a good size that you can’t go wrong with. Going shorter could be good as well but going to short is probably just as bad as too long.
@@pebbleinspector why would this bike be different than any other bike?
Did you use the same size chainring?
Yes. Probably should have gone down to a 30t
Drama😂 so I’m not sure if someone brought this up but that bike has a high bottom bracket, you should try those 165 on a bike with a lower bottom bracket that is much more pedal strikes! I know a guy!
I hear ya!
your very intermittent swearing got me laughing so bad hahahah!
i went from a 165 to a 175, and i love it, but as a weaker rider i'd get any mechanical advantage i can get
😂 I try not to cuss a lot but sometimes that’s just the right word to describe a feeling.
I definitely felt more power and easier pedaling with the 175s… but I really like the downhill performance of the 165s
Hello, may I ask you how tall are you and what is your inseam?
6’2” and 34” I think
Show the clip where you went over the handlebars on the climb! Entertain the people man!!
I’ve been having issues with my GoPro 11 mini. Unfortunately, I didn’t capture that in video.
I've been trying for a year to find a set of used 165mm cranks. I'm riding a salsa fargo and it has 175mm cranks. Stupid. Especially, when I have a 31" inseam. I should be riding 155 or 160. And yes, Appleman, 5dev, and White Industries have these but you have to take out a second mortgage to buy them. Spend a grand for a bike that cost me 1500 five years ago.
For sure man. What cranks do you have now? I’ve found some good deals on shimano deore cranks, but most used cranks are 170 or 175 since that’s what comes on most bikes
i also want try 165
I love the way it made the bike handle downhill, BUT should have got a 30t chain ring.
Im switching right now
👍👍👍
Next time check into Praxis cranks and bottom brackets. You could of went carbon for $310
That probably would have been a smarter option. Spending over $500 was a bit ridiculous for this upgrade.
"go put a shirt on you little hooligan" haha
😂 Yeah, I decided just to leave that part in there. #dadlife
@@JaredHoff Such a dad thing to say for sure.LOL
Yeah a smaller framed bike for smaller riders should have appropriate sized cranks , i see xs 49 cm bikes with 170 mm cranks , the bike industry just throws 170 mm on everthing .
Definitely 👍
Wait, you have a repair stand, why didn’t you have it in there while working on the bike…
I had it on the ground initially to break the cranks and bottom bracket loose.
Then just kept it on the ground because I film all these videos solo and had ti keep switching the bike back and forth to get good camera angles. Or at least I tried to 🤔 LOL
i went with 165 RF turbines. i actually don’t care for the 5Dev look. At least not on the ebike i seen in person
RF makes some good cranks
How tall are you
6’2”
175mm crank. Jesus, polygon must have found those in the bargain bin. I have been run 165 cranks for the past 3 years. There are no downsides. That allows longer dropper, allows bikes to come with bigger bb drop for better cornering.
For sure! I was surprised when I saw 175 😬 sucks because XT cranks are good so it was almost bittersweet to replace them
Short, cranks,
, you can’t just start blasting away over rocks and high spots forcing close calls with p strikes and not expect to crash. You have to time pedal strokes and half pedal to avoid them all together
Otherwise, you’re going down out in the middle of who knows where.
I hear ya! I crash during this video so probably need to keep practicing 😂
Someone machine up some telescoping cranks.
Word 👍
This is definitely not new. I've been riding 165's for over 6 years now. No reason to ever go back to longer cranks.
Heck yeah! Sounds like you had it figured out way before others 👍
Optimal Length Is 20% of your Inseam with Shoe On 😁 mine Is 157.5 😁 I Have 165s on My CF Demo Feels Excellent . Will be getting some 155s for My CF Warden 😎 More RPM
Heck yeah! I didn’t do any math on this one. Just assumed 165 would be a good fit.
I'm short with 28 inseam. 165mm cranks are perfect for me.
5 DEV for the win 🥇
No they don’t help XCRiders.
Can’t hammer up climbs.
(Short people ok I get it)
I get that, but I pretty much only ride enduro or trail bikes
When it comes to cranks and applicable accessories, 5DEV is the 2nd biggest rip off in the industry… behind CaneCreek
Definitely expensive, but I’m happy with them.
Sorry but without adjusting the seat height this video was a bit of a waste of time.
lower saddle will suck the energy out of legs.....while climbing.
For sure! I need to raise it up a bit.
Do you speak normally in real life?
I think so 🤷🏼♂️ I don’t change my personality for videos. This is just me, Imperfections and all.
Can you please put your helmet on properly and adjust the straps properly its a helmet not a hat .
I hear ya 👍 You should have seen me in my skateboarding days LOL
