    I think what you’re seeing in the old toy biz sculpting is the fact that it was hand sculpted in wax, most more than toys nowadays are done on computer so there is a new cleaner more precise look to them, there’s merits to both but I do think the new stuff appeals to me more, never thought I’d say that

    Toybiz Ghost Rider might move like he ate too much, but man the texture on him is great! Really works for him. Same with Mac Gargan Venom, we really need a new figure for him. But that Sandman look like he still holds up. Genuinely looks better than the recent ones.

    I know exactly what you mean. I still have most of my og toybiz marvel legends from when I was a kid. In a tub lol. The best articulated figures at the time. There is a memory attached to each of those figures. Whether it's when I found it in the wild, or the joy of playing with them. Toybiz marvel legends is to me what he-man or transformers is to kids from the 80s. There's a lot of nostalgia. They weren't perfect, but they were unlike anything at the time. My first marvel legend was the classic iron man from the first wave back in 2002. I remember finding it on the pegs of toysrus, and I was just in awe. I had never seen anything like it before. I didn't have an iron man figure, and had always wanted one. It was the coolest figure my 7yr old eyes had seen. I remember they had the whole first wave with classic cap (which was also very enticing), hulk, and toad. I begged my parents to buy it for me. I still have it, with one arm missing. Still one of my favorite figures out of my now ridiculously massive collection. I will never get rid of it.
    Anyway, that toybiz sandman figure still holds up. It still stands as the sandman in my spiderman collection. I love that figure. The newer ones are cool, and I have them, but the toybiz one is still my sandman. There's still a few toybiz figures still standing proudly on display in my collection. Some I can immediately recall is the vs 2pk classic hulk, sandman, the sinister six boxset vulture, the vs 2pk kingpin, and the johnny blaze skinny ghost rider from wave 7 I believe. They are still great figures imo.

    I feel I have a very similar perspective on the figures I own. They are toys and I have created many memories with these toys. So I’m not Gung Ho for selling my memories. Granted as I age the memories get more spotty. I also realize when I’m gone the memories also go. I have discussed my wife that when I go, allow my children and grand kids to have the toys they want. Sell whatever you want to sell. Give action figures away to the guests at my funeral. Give the toys to the local children’s homes or centers that help single parents. Pass them on so they create new memories. That Spider-Man classics Sandman is how I judge all subsequent renditions of that character. It is to me as premium as the imports and expensive collectibles. Yes it has flaws. The improvement articulation/sculpt/proportions to fit in a certain aesthetic I can appreciate. Nevertheless I have in that figure sculpt and paint and very good articulation. It is a 3D piece that makes my memories of the 2D character alive. Every time I look at that Black Panther I see $6.47 each and part of the multiple versions I bought to obtain pieces of the six Sentinels I have. I will always remember Toybiz as the company who delivered kick ass affordable Sentinels which are very much the gritty 90s. Those Sentinels are bad machines and would swarm the more stoic looking Hasbro one and just thrash it. Anyway, fun taking the ride with you in these Tales from the Tubs.

  • @mikepowers9486
    @mikepowers9486 Před 2 měsíci

    I collected and still have all my 5" Toybiz figures. I stopped as soon as I started to see those awful ball joints and super odd proportions. All the new and over done articulation points that warped the figures look even more just made me groan. I was a teen at that time and was like, nope. These look horrid. Also they were getting bigger and didn't go with my 5" figs. I am so happy I got out of collecting back then.
    Started again about 5 years ago. Now of course all my stuff is 6" and look way better than everything previous. My 5" collection is put away but like you, they give me such good memories. So Happy I skipped on all the mess after until modern Hasbro. Are they perfect? No, but for me they are much better.

    I see that your stance on action figures, Mr. Robo, is similar to Scrooge McDuck's stance on his money, as written by Carl Barks and Don Rosa. The value of his money doesn't come from the intrinsic value of the coins and bills themselves, but from Scrooge memories of how he made that money.

    I've thought about Toybiz being the 90s of action figures for a while. The exaggerated anatomy, the sometimes overly detailed style, the griminess, it screams 90s. The one thing that makes it not the 90s is the way their female characters looked sometimes. There's no era where their Rogue and Emma would be normal!

    As a newer/younger collector, Robo talking about how he could drop his kids off at school and then go toy hunting waves just hurts. Nowadays, distribution is so awful that if you don't pre-order, you're probably not going to see figures at retail (at least in my neck of the country).

    • @RoboDontKnow
      @RoboDontKnow  Před 2 měsíci

      Yeah, but you have to remember that online wasn't near the thing it is now. Ordering online was fancy and new and unheard of. If we wanted things we HAD to go hunting. And it definitely wasn't shooting fish in a barrel. It was way more miss than hits, many times you walk in through garden center, walk right back out 2 minutes later. But you had to go daily or every other day for fear of missing something and you had no clue when things were going to show up. Plus, as you mention, the whole neck of the woods. You'd see people finding things in their area and never see it in yours. If it didn't hit you were either trading online or going to ebay. Definitely not what you're imagining, haha.

    I say this as a huge fan of silver and early bronze age marvel comics... I kinda dont like washes and texture on my figures. Most costumes werent drawn with lots of texture. I want a detailed head sculpt like were getting these days, but lets keep the costume smooth like in the comics. 😢 Shading will happen naturally due to sculpt and daylight and lighting. I also get grouchy over calf cuts when they dont have boots. We cant move there naturally and it makes figures look...like figures? Breaks the look imo. Same with those waist cuts.
    I really like the new version of that style BP. The toybiz one was too textured and a pea head 😊

    I love being a Toy Biz Hater Hipster, becasue it means I didn't spend my money on most of these - except that Sandman, I want that Sandman - I loathed the look of these figures at the time and was kind angry at them because I'm a big Marvel fan and the people doing the figures were doing such a crap job, the really big ball joints, the terrible proportions, the over-detailing with too much muscle defintion or 100 folds on everything, weird texturing, they look all twisted and wrong, like what i image Todd McFarlane's version of the Creature From the Black Lagoon would look like, only somehow with even worse articulation. Yes. I have just used Robo's video to vent about toys from decades ago - again? I'm sure I've done it before on here. And I don't feel bad. But I do totally get what you're saying Robo, i have older, crappier, figures i've upgraded that I just can't get rid of because they're memories. Luckily most of mine dont look like Toy Biz Black Panthers but some of them are nearly as bad, and the Toy Biz (well Marvel Toys) Savage Dragon is far, far worse.

    Why are the shoulders coming out of the ribcage on modern legends? It's not as bad as it used to be on these guys but it's still really bad. Tiny low shoulders on almost every modern hasbro mold. Always cool to revisit where we came from to recontextualize how good we have it now and to see what still needs to improve

    Toybiz had the superhero proportions, but outdated lengthy limbs,
    Hasbro has "cosplay" proportions 🤦🏼‍♂️ but not as crazy length as toybiz

    Playmates using that same hip articulation just kills my desire for their turtles. It will probably be how they do Power Rangers, too.

    I am different from most collectors.
    I only have about six thousand figures. Do not a huge collection but good for me. I must display all of my figures. So between my office where 85 % of my figures live and my garage where I have turned all of the studded recessed walls areas into action figures displays all have a plexiglass barrier to keep everything in place. But yes I display all of my figures, old, new to very old. I can not not display them.
