CLUTCH BASKET REBUILD / REPLACING THE CLUTCH HUB ON HARLEY 6 SPEED

  • While we were working on my buddy Larry’s bike it became obvious that the clutch hub needed to be replaced. The splines on the inside of the clutch hub were breaking down and the metal was getting into the bearing and causing destruction. This is a problem with 6 speeds from 2006 to 2010 and there is no real fix. Checking you hub at regular intervals is the only way to prevent future transmission problems as well.

      Thanks glad you liked it. I do not know anything about the Assisted Slip Clutch and do not plan to learn about it. Actually I have never heard of it. Vintage bikes are where my skill set is, and my interest. Sorry I cannot help you out. Hopefully you can find another channel that will specialize in that.Thanks for commenting.

    Great video. I subscribed. I have questions. Trying to solve a noisy primary. Replacing the inner primary bearing. Started looking at the clutch. Didn't know that I would need a press.Until i watched your video. When i removed the two snap rings, I pushed the hub out with my hand !! So, i need a hub as well as a bearing? Or should i see if a bearing will tighten the fit? Thanks

      Thanks for subscribing. I would guess that the hub is worn if the bearing fell right off of it. You can measure your hub to check the diameter against a new bearing, hub should be bigger than the inside of the bearing by a thousands or 2, but I would suspect that very likely the hub is shot. Thanks for the question. Hope it helps you out.

    I hear the aluminum baskets are prone to cracking. Perhaps a good time to replace it with a heavy-duty basket? My clutch chatters going into 3rd when it's cold about one or two times but never after it's warm.

      Good Question. I do not think there is really any other way to do it properly. Maybe somone out there has a solution and will comment. Sometime you just have to bite the bullet and find somone with a press. Thanks for the question and taking the time to comment!

    My splines look just like that. Unfortunately, my ring gear is chewed up a bit, too, so I'm looking at buying the whole assembly.
    What causes this damage?

    • @itsmytimeletsgo
      @itsmytimeletsgo  Před 5 měsíci

      It is an on going problem with the 6 speeds of those years. Transmission problems can also contribute to the problem. Bad bearings in the right and left sides allowing the mainshaft to shift, when going form 5th to 6th and back down to 5th. Usually you will get mainseal leaks when the bearings are bad as well. Good luck. Thanks for asking and commenting.

    I do not currently have a shop press. Does it need to be 12-ton to do this job?

    • @itsmytimeletsgo
      @itsmytimeletsgo  Před 3 měsíci +2

      No mine is only a common small jack type 4 ton. Thanks for the question and comment.

    I just pressed in a new hub. Installed the snap ring. Spun it and its noisy. Should be silent?

    • @itsmytimeletsgo
      @itsmytimeletsgo  Před 5 měsíci +1

      They are big bearings so they do make some noise when you spin them. But they should not sound like the are scrapping, or rough turning, so to speak. You have to make sure to support the bearing properly, in the center, when installing the hub so as to not put pressure on the bearing itself. Thanks for the question and commenting.

      @@itsmytimeletsgo thx for your reply! Ok, I checked with indy shop, he said its normal since its dry. It doesn't feel rough or like its scraping anything. Can't wait get it put back together!
