  • Sergei Polunin / Сергей Полунин "The Making of a Love Story" Marguerite & Armand
    Armand: Sergei Polunin
    Marguerite: Tamara Rojo
    Choreographer: Frederick Ashton (1963)
    Music: Franz Liszt's B minor piano sonata and Daylight by Kai Engel
    Sergei Polunin is a Ukrainian ballet dancer. Famous for his “once every hundred years” talent, he has incredulous elevation and impeccable technique. From an early age, he displayed glorious dramatic range. Home videos of him as a tiny boy improvising to Pavarotti are very foretelling. At age 20, he became the Royal Ballet’s youngest ever principal dancer.
    Ballet gained an unprecedented new awareness when he danced in Hozier’s viral video ”Take Me To Church.” People who never would have never paid any attention to ballet began to watch the tattooed phenom. He is generally attributed with bringing ballet to the modern common man. Classical, yet cutting edge, Sergei starred in Diesel’s “Make Love Not Walls” campaign and has put his mark on many other promotions.
    Sergei is a much sought after model and actor. Fashion designers love his breathtaking physique and brooding good looks. He has garnered only positive reviews for his acting. His appearances include Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of the Orient Express, the biographical documentary Dancer, The White Crow, and Red Sparrow.

      Beautiful video, as always!
      Do you know why Sergei had to cancel the performance of Marguerite and Armand with Natascha which had been planned for this summer? I am sure he had a good reason. I have just been looking forward to it so much.
      I have another question:: which of Sergei's performances have been taped professionally and are available to buy on DVD?
      Thx for your beautiful iMovies and your answers.

    • @PamBoehmeSimon
      @PamBoehmeSimon  Před 7 lety +3

      I have not heard an official reason for the cancellation. One can't help but wonder if it had something to do with the breakup.
      Alice In Wonderland, Peter and the Wolf, and Dancer are the only performances that I am aware of. I own the first two on DVD and Dancer via iTunes. They are worth the effort, cost, whatever. He is sublime in both. His Knave of Hearts is freakin' adorable lol. There is also a Ashton Celebration DVD (The Royal Ballet) that has the final performance of M&A by Tamara Rojo and Sergei on it.

      From Bettina To Pam Boehme Simon :
      Thank you very much for all the information!
      I will try to find what I can.
      The above video is one of by favorites. They show so many different emotions. Plus I always think the rehearsals are a lot more interesting than the final performance. That's just my opinion.
      Rehearsals / practice show what's really going on and how it all comes together to get to the final product I also like Tamara Rojo a lot. She is excellent in this role. As far as I am concerned they are a great pair. Dancing together brings out the best in both of them.
      I don't think the cancellation had anything to do with a break up. As far as I know he canceled more than a month before. Which is the responsible thing to do. I also think he is too much of a professional to cancel bc of his private life at the last minute.
      He didn't cancel the Hollywood bowl performance. Wasn't this one with Natalia O. ?
      Sorry I apologize but I have another question: from where did you get the information about them breaking up and it being final?
      Thank you for all the work you are doing!

    • @PamBoehmeSimon
      @PamBoehmeSimon  Před 7 lety +1

      You know, Bettina, you are right. And, as I typed that out about the break up maybe being the reason, I thought to myself, that can't be it... he is way too much of a professional for that... so I completely take that statement back.
      I get most of my info from news reports, interview tidbits, and Facebook (his fan sites have news like that, and they're usually spot on... they are not "groupies" but very devoted and caring people who have his best interests at heart... and very sweetly, they are highly protective of him). I am friends with his mom and Jade on FB but they never talk about his private life, nor would I ever ask. So, all that being said, I do not KNOW they've broken up, but clues lead one to think probably so. He and Natalia did go out to dinner together after the Hollywood Bowl but it seemed like a friend thing, not a couple thing.
      And, finally, thank YOU for being so kind. I love your comments, and questions. I do what I do because I love it, and and it has been the best surprise to find that others like it as well. To be able to share love, beauty, and happiness is the best medicine one could want. Please keep watching and writing. I look forward to your comments.

      @@PamBoehmeSimon Thanks so much for the information! I was hunting for more information about how to watch the full ballet after seeing this clip czcams.com/video/KfCTBasm84o/video.html. I don't follow ballet or know a lot about it, except for always having enjoyed watching occasional, impressive ballet solos or pas de deux, since my sister likes ballet, but I'm usually admittedly, a bit bored beyond that. But seeing your Polunin videos reawakened my interest and the Royal Opera House clip I mention here is the first time I've wanted to actually watch an entire ballet (I adore Liszt, so this is going to be gorgeous). I'm so excited I was able to easily find a copy of the Ashton Celebration and ordered it immediately. Thanks for sharing your passions!

    Could someone explain the significance of the last scene as I’m not familiar with this ballet? It’s a very unusual scene, beautifully and emotionally played out by Sergei.

      Marguerite and Armand was created for Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn in 1963 by founding choreographer of The Royal Ballet, Frederick Ashton. The story draws from the same inspiration as Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La traviata - the play La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils. Fonteyn herself recalled the intensity of the choreography, claiming that the tragic love story was 'a passion more real than life itself’.
