I think the reason this movie resonated with people so much and still does is that it taps into the most fundamental question for all of us: who we are, where we came from, what were the lives of our ancestors like, does fate exist, and what can we aspire to in the future.
I'll never know how my ancestors lived in Germany centuries ago, and this movie offers a twist: what if you could?

There's also the question of what it means to really live. Connor was alive for so long as an Immortal, but never really lived, if you get my meaning. What gives us purpose? Drive? And if you did live forever would that make us lose any sense of urgency to make our lives what it is?

This movie is so well written and directed, it still holds up today, fuck cgi, even with cheap fx this movie still blows your mind, crew did their fucking best, and the music, oh the music, they all line up, its perfection..

I'll be honest, this is my guilty pleasure movie. It doesn't totally work, but damn it does have greatness in it.
This is definitely never what I expected. All these years, since I was a kid in the 90s, I thought this movie was about life in the Scottish highlands and falling in love and other stuff. Never about time traveling. Unbelievable.
It is not about time travelling. It’s about immortality, amongst other things.

Compared to Highlander, all the movies you mentioned are extremely boring and quite predictable. Not even the Terminator can compare with Highlander. As a viewer, I'd rather be kept on the edge of my seat then be bored half out of my mind. In fact, the only movie that could even remotely come close would "the Matrix".

People give the Kurgan Sword a bad rep nowadays. They forget to factor in that these were the actual 80's ... there are very special rules for the 80's, everyone knows this - especially people from the 80's ...
for example: Aside from all the other stuff the Kurgan Sword will cut metal scaffolding, produce pink explosions upon impact and, when wielded correctly as per principles developed upon the ancient steppes of Russia, knock down medieval Scottish castle stone walls, which might otherwise require the use of catapults and ballistas or a squadron of Sherman Tanks.
While this is a sword that will cut the roof of a standard American vehicle and comfortably carry the weight of a well-fed marine, at least at the time you could still bring it as hand luggage on any flight in and out of the US, as long as it was properly disassembled and neatly packaged.
Further it is very well suited for attracting lightning and will serve as a general stabilizer should you unexpectedly have your head chopped off. This sword will keep you standing in an impressive ominous pose for at least 35 seconds, possibly even longer unless hit by a random blast of exploding glass.
Finally it is WAY more affordable than a Toledo-Salamanca, and saves you a lot of unwanted, elaborate gymnastics, that tends to only end in tragedy anyway ...
Word of caution: This sword will NOT however, improve the quality of anyones voice - unlike some equally well regarded Asian flagship models. While generally admissible in public transportation, this sword may NOT be carried in official Catholic establishments.

Hollywood found out that a Scottish hero Movie would be bankable. Then Braveheart came out. Now we need an Irish story. How about Boru. Brian that is. That would be epic if they ever do the story about the Lion of Ireland. That being Brian Boru. Especially with all the recent interest in Viking history. This would tell the Viking history in Ireland. England was subdued by the Vikings. Ireland never was. This is the history never told. The Irish resisted all Viking attempts at taking over Ireland whereas England was subdued. Brian Boru was the last Irish - Viking battle. The Irish obliterated the Vikings a final time as they did the prior two hundred years. Ronald Reagan was related to Boru and Walter Mondale was related to Vikings. That is why they said Reagan stomped Mondale. History repeated itself. I am one that believes true history should be recorded. That’s why this movie should be made. Boooo ya

Highlander Endgame had CGI lightning effects and it looks like a television show compared to the original movie.

There was actually a Highlander game in development but was scrapped. Check it out there's a trailer too. It's to bad it was scrapped. My idea of a highlander game would be similar to an elder scrolls game like Skyrim, replace the dragons with random wandering immortals and dragon souls absorption with quickenings. Would be cool
OmEgAChAllAnGe You know, modding Skyrim on PC into a Highlander game wouldn't be completely impossible. There already exist mods that allow players to turn dragons into humans (with the use of spells), change the soul absorption effect, have the decapitation kill animation play for every kill and add highly detailed Kurgan's sword and Ramirez's katana into the game, so if some skilled modders were to bunch all the mods together and make the necessary tweaks for a Highlander theme, it could really work. I'm actually surprised at the lack of Highlander themed Skyrim mods.

This film was amazing, made in 1986 an I was way to young to watch it when it came out but remember watching it for first time as a teenage in 1992 and loved it, what a film and queen songs make it great too, still my favourite movie of all time over 30 years later 👌👍🏴

Lambert suffers from myopia. His timeless gaze pretty much landed him this role.
The ending proved anti-climatic, lacking the engrossing atmosphere, menacing feel, grit of the fight for immortality. Great, classic '80s film, but some features of the script, screenplay, esp. toward the end, need to be revised, re-imagined.

Highlander was not a Cannon film. It was only distributed at theatres in the UK and on home video in the US. It was a Thorn Emi film.

I have never seen this movie before, and have just watched the trailer for the first time here. I have no idea what the hell I just saw, with Scottish warriors, modern day setting and characters, and freakin' wrestling, but goddamn if I am not interested in seeing this film now.
Ok I watched it a second time, and I hadn't noticed the first time, but apparently the main character is immortal, which is why he's in the modern day. That makes more sense for why they were showing shots like that.
My favorite movie, I'm Scottish and I was 6 when the movie came out. Saw it when I was 7, went up the Highlands all the time with my mum and dad. So for me, best movie ever.
Seriously, if you still haven't seen it, you must! It's a classic. Stay away from the sequels, though. They were horrible. There was also a tv series (which I liked, but then, I'm a woman ... dark tall and handsome guy with a longsword, who cares if the story is cheesy as hell ...) But the original movie is really really good and well worth a watch.

I made my Highlander on For Honor with the lightning beheading effect but never knew why. Born in 1995 I remember this movie where you get the power from others after cutting off their head and lightning hits..... Makes since the movie name was Highlander as For Honor very much uses the main character imagery too!

The most 80s film I’ve ever seen
The sword fight scene on top of the building sold me.
I love how they fall down five flights to the street and get up and continue fighting. The other great part is when they are in the church and Mccloud grabs his face and tells him that he cannot stay in the church and must face him
