Digital media is a 100% loss for the consumer. They can cancel the game remotely and there is NO resale value. This also allows the companies to produce lower quality games and make a much higher profit. BUY physical media and stop doing micro-transactions. Games used to be complete at the time of purchase, now they are trying to make gamers monthly payment and upgrade slaves. You know this Metal Jesus, I can see your game collection on every video. So true. I have so many consoles and games, many that have become very collectable. This will not be possible for future generations of gamers and enthusiasts. The games will simply not exist or be available from legitimate sources.

On the other hand, nature itself is constantly conspiring with entropy to destroy your physical media. Everything has a trade-off. I know I much prefer having a large digital library of PC games compared to the long-long ago when I needed to maintain drawers full of CD cases. And how does a digital distribution chain mean they spend less on games? They're able to spend more on development if physical media isn't required.. haven't you seen the costs indie devs have to absorb in order to get their stuff out on physical? That's not trivial. And what is this "now they're trying to blah blah.."? They've been using multiplayer console gaming as a route to an online monthy price experience for well over a decade, since long before digital media was even possible. Digital media is not a cause of any of the things you're talking about.. if anything, it's a symptom of changes in ownership attitudes in game companies. Blame the leadership, not digital formats.
Not to mention, I live in a fire evac zone and spending valuable car space and time on grabbing obsolete CDs and cartriges would be absolutely insane in case of a mandatory evacuation. With digital formats, I'm not stuck to archaic modes of info storage.. I can evac with a laptop full of emulators, and my steam library will be waiting for me wherever I log in. That peace of mind is far more real than any "lost value" you perceive in being unable to flip secondhand games.

I hate the whole streaming games and all digital. What do you do in a couple years when it’s phased out and have no physical games? It’s just weird to me. They’re going to get rid of the video game section at stores and it becomes a digital monopoly

Digital games don't get phased out in a "couple years", the Wii shop channel shut down last year so that was a little over 12 years while Xbox Live and PSN for the 360 and PS3 are still active. Aside from that, you gotta realize the majority of people get rid of their old games at some point so we're the weird ones if anything lol
Especially if they're singleplayer, but you gotta watch the number of copies made. Some 3DS games went sky high in price not too far after release
Davidx 117 yeah I can see my friends that are more casual gamers doing that opposed to me I’m more of a collector, and I’d much rather have a physical copy. I guess my idea is that once it becomes 100% digital which is probably inevitable, it becomes a monopoly where the prices are the same everywhere which will suck. Digital is convenient and sure saves space but I just really feel like I own my physical games, and I’ve never sold any and I hope I never have to.

if you get the series x on the $35 monthly payments for 24 months that equates to $840, so paying $340 dollars more for the ability to pay monthly, not a good deal in my opinion.

When I finally do get a PS5, I’m getting one with a disc drive for the reasons you mentioned. Physical PS4 games are almost always dirt cheap a few months down the road. Only Nintendo Switch games seem to never go down on price, lol!

I've never bought a console on release ever, however I did preorder a PS5. I hope I am not proven wrong.
In a year the ps5 or xbox isn't going down and most electronics fall in the 10 percent defective rate.
I’m planning on waiting for a bundle. I’m only 14 so I definitely don’t buy in release, because although my parents could buy me any console any day I like to work for my money and things just like they did.

None of the new Xbox titles are doing much for me, yet I'm still going to buy an Xbox Series X simply for backwards compatibility. Not right away. Maybe after the first price drop. I'm a patient guy. Still have an absurd amount of PS4 titles that I never got around to playing.

Medium, Gears Tactics, Flight Simulator, and Hellblade 2 all look solid. CrossfireXs multiplayer looks terrible, but the single player by Remedy seems interesting.

That's because you don't have lot of games. I have over 1000 physical games in my house and it takes space. Since PS4 and Xbox one I only buy digital. More convenient and don't need a room only to store my games
Especially when black Friday hits. Most retailers drop game prices. If you're all digital your at the mercy of the Microsoft or Sony.
I'm with you. I love having the physical copies, and to the comments about its because you don't have a lot of games, I don't think that is a factor at all. I have a fair few games and yes, they do take up space, but that's part of the collecting life! Can't really be a collector if you have nothing physical to represent it with them being able to shut and remove games from digital storefronts as they see fit. I like the digital games since it does not require me to change discs and, with kids, it's far more convenient, but I'd still rather be able to use physical media as long as I can

PS: I am absolutely obsessed with my Switch, but with that lineup for the PS5, and that price point for the Xbox Series X/S, with the monthly payments...man...sooooo tempting. My bank account's already shivering in fear.

I'll pick up the XsX once Bethesda and the other MS Studios start pumping out quality games. If that takes 2-3 years, I'm fine with waiting. Yeah, for gamers like Metal Jesus and me, who have a lot of old games, the Xbox backwards compatibility is *amazing*. It sounds like the engineering geniuses behind it at Microsoft are going to go wild with the new next-gen hardware also. They have already promised most backwards compatible games will have HDR added to them via machine learning (ML is what Nvidia uses for the amazing DLSS 2.0 upscaling) in addition to the resolution, texture and filtering upgrades they got this gen. They have even said they maybe able to add higher framerates to some games, giving old 30fps games 60fps options. All for free. Mind-blowing.

from the beginning every company said there is so much savings going digital. most outright said it'll mean more affordable games and those that didn't implied it. instead throw an adjective in front of the word edition, add less than a gb of content, then charge $110. it's not designed to sell, it's designed to justify the $60 by comparison. then pay some youtubers to play it for publicity and generate fomo. and now future msrp will be 70. yay.
It *would* be nice if digital games were like $5 cheaper than physical...but something tells me Gamestop, Target, BestBuy, Walmart won't allow it (or refuse to stock the game if it was)

I'm on the fence and leaning towards the Xbox series X, even though I've always owned a Playstation system. I'm attracted to that the Xbox Series X is fully backwards compatible. The downfall is I'd have to buy all the legacy games I already own for PS 1-3. I wish PS5 had backwards compatibility for all 4 systems.
I'll also wait after the first launch to see the feedback on the consoles are before I drop money on them.
Yup yup. It's because the PS1/PS2/PS3 hardware were all so unique that making the PS5 compatible with all of it's past hardware infrastructures would be very expensive and time-consuming probably. So they will probably use PS Now or something like that to allow people to play the older games on their newest system.
For sure. I'm gonna go with PS5 because PS is my go to. But that Xbox game pass sub also looks more and more like a great deal.

You're locked out of game ownership and your some of your collection can vanish in an instant if Microsoft has a dispute with a third party publisher. Another aspect to consider is that the price for Game Scam is a moving target. The price WILL go up when third parties demand a bigger slice of that subscription pie.
They're not putting their games on the service for free, after all. Microsoft is paying those publishers to make the games available on the service and as it becomes more successful, they're going to want more money. That will mean a greater expense out of your pocket as they jack up the price. To make matters worse, the increases will be small at first. A dollar here, two dollars there, and before you know it Game Scam Ultimate will be $34.99 a month when it was originally $14.99 a month.
David Meier, this is a very very good point here. It’s a hard no from me, then. I’ll just play whatever games Microsoft drops on Steam, and play the PS5 to catch any worth Sony exclusives.

On the surface, it is a great deal, but it locks you into digital only game delivery and you are essentially leasing the games. Moreover, Microsoft almost certainly has written into the fine print that they reserve the right to add or remove games at their discretion.
You already got every system, so obviously you'll get both, money is not your problem.

There probably won't be a slim/refined version this time. The PS2 got a slim version very late because kids were taking it to each other's houses. Not necessary anymore because of online multiplayer. The PS3 got 2 slims because Sony was desperate to reduce the price. The PS4 got a Pro because 4KTV became cheap and popular around 2015 onwards so they had to catch up,, and PS4 Slim was because people kept complaining about the loud engine. This time, the PS5 and Xbox are trying to future-proof by including HDMI 2.1, 120fps, 144Hz, VRR, SSD and ray tracing. This time TV has to catch up to the videogames instead of the other way around.

Really good question, but i'm not sure. If most casual gamers switch to digital, then used games demand will also drop, so the impact on prices is ambiguous. By used games demand dropping i mean also a new generation of gamers will lose the habit of going into physical stores to buy their games, so they won't have the opportunity to buy used games either. So used games prices could drop even faster.
I went PS5 digital as I find sales on the PlayStation store often offer great deals equivalent to buying pre owned
What makes you think there will be significantly fewer physical games on the second hand market?
I get that some people will start making the move over to digital-only, but there are still so many people who like physical media for one reason or another.
Some people don't have great internet connections, so they prefer to buy discs instead of downloading their games.
Many people play their games for a week and then resell soon after. (at least that happens a lot where I live) Which they can't do if they buy digitally.
Lots of us are frustrated with the small (less than 1TB) SSD on the PlayStation, so people who want large libraries of games will be forced into buying physical games, especially in the next gen where AAA games are going to be consistently 60+GB by mid-gen.
As the video says, loads of us like to buy our games a few months after launch, when pre-owned prices have dropped. Those of us will continue to fund the cycle of resale.
Not to mention those of us who simply like the feeling of holding our games in our hands and displaying them on our shelves. Metal Jesus included.

Yup, what Tom said. If MS decides to be real dicks and make the next Elder Scrolls game an XB exclusive.. That alone is enough to make which console you bought "the right/wrong decision" for a lot of people. I don't personally think MS will turn down the kind of revenue a Playstation edition of Elder Scrolls will generate, but they might.. at the very least, you can bet PS owners will have to wait a while after the Xbox version ships before they get in on the fun. XB will probably also get exclusive content.

Saving money can work. I pay for a game each time they come out. When I get one both me and my son gets it which means I have saved 1/2 as I would have had to buy 2 disks due to not being able to share disks

Bought a PS4 Pro shortly after release, taken it out of the box once to test it and check FW version. Have a few dozen games, mostly still in the wrapping. Just waiting for the late developments in CFW to truly open up its capabilities. :-D I just got into PS3 for that reason, so I've got time!

While I like Playstation for its exclusives, I also own a Switch and have access to most Xbox titles with my gaming laptop with Xbox Game Pass or Steam. However, the XBOX series S and also the option of the payment plan I think could give Microsoft an edge this generation
If were talking pure sales, Sony will win the "console wars" big time again like they always do. I know people think gamepass will bring a lot of people over to xbox, but I think they might actually loose a lot of people, who would have bought an xbox, because they can just play the games on PC.

PS5 has a bunch of great PS4 games available at launch and XBOX Series S/X has the game pass and is backward compatible with hundreds of previous gens' games.
For someone who didn't buy into PS4 or XBOX 1, the library on these consoles is simply huge, without waiting a year.

I totally agree with Kelsey. Most of the games I buy are new. I usually buy them online at about the £10-£20 point. If you shop around, you can find some major bargains.
I haven't paid more than 20 for a ps4 game in about 2 years. Some as cheap as 5 bucks, 10 bucks or 15. I just got the Medieval remaster at walmart for 10. Kingdom hearts 3 remaster for 10. Spiderman and god of war for 20 each a year ago.
The reality is that this is about to change, drastically. Most games aren't going to get physical editions this gen, the industry is moving to all-digital as a whole. Digital is going to be the way to go now if you actually want to save money, since most physical editions will be overpriced editions from Limited Run, which just go up in value after release

I had a good idea I wanted the PS5 six months ago. I started setting aside $125 of every paycheck in June. By Nov 5, I'll have $1500 - which should be more than enough for PS5 standard ($500), 1 extra controller ($70), a charging dock ($50), an extra SSD for more storage ($200), chat headset ($200), and 4 launch titles ($70/ea) - plus tax. And maybe enough left over for a nice dinner. Who's coming over?
Microsoft definitely has the more customer friendly platform with backwards compatibility and game pass. I use game pass on my PC and for someone on a limited budget the monthly option is an excellent choice because you get access to so many games with your monthly payment. I personally will get the PS5 because of its exclusives but I can definitely see the appeal to the Xbox

As much as I want a PS5 and belive it's the best choice for the next-gen, the fact that the new xbox will let me play all of my Xbox one games (that includes most of my OG Xbox and 360 games), it's too much of a good deal to ignore, so... At first, I'll go Xbox Series X and then get a PS5 later on the generation as the exclusives line up.

Pre-ordered a ps5 as Sony Studios have most of the games I want to play. For Example, Spider-Man, God of War series, Demons Souls, Returnal, Last of us series, Ghost of T, Forbidden series. I also bought a disc version as I like to keep my games on disc, also I want to use it to watch Blu-ray 4k discs. Both consoles are going to be fantastic, we live in a very exciting time for gamers!
While the PS4 has been out, I've been playing lots of PS2 games I still had yet to play. It's been really fun and really affordable. I may get a PS5 after a few years.... skipped the current gen completely and don't regret a thing.

I mean considering the fact that I got the PS2 back in December 2001 , almost 20 years ago , I think I prefer to leave the past behind me.. , as would everyone else , you build memories n then time changes & people move on.. , playing the PS2 in 2020 is not the same as playing it back when it was new & with the times in 2001-2006 , that’s my take on it
I have xb1 and ps4 but hardly play them compared to my old console collection. I prefer the imagination and simplicity that makes older games feel less of a chore sometimes than the newer games. Having said that, will still invest as I cant help myself.
But you will regreat, I skipped the PS2 era and Im so mad these days...

Not mentioning the Demon Souls remake as a PS5 launch title is a big miss for this video IMO. That's a huge PS5 seller.

It´s all about the games. For me personally, I love the Xbox line up from classic to Xbox One, so will go 100% sure for the Series X. So much games on backwards compatibility, I love. And for Playstation, there are some nice games, but I am more a Xbox gamer. My most beloved consoles this time: Xbox One X and Nintendo Switch. Hope I get a Series X on the 22nd of september in preorder. The best thing: That I can plug in the USB 4 TB external HDD into the Series X and can start gaming, w/o to have download the whole backward compat stuff again.

The Xbox Series X and S both look like fine consoles especially for the price, game pass, and xbox one controller support. But there are just no new games to look forward to during the launch.

I usually do not post comments; however, I feel the need especially with regards to the upcoming "Next Generation Consoles".
First, on a positive note, I have always enjoyed your podcasts along with your friends assisting you throughout the years. Always appreciated all your candid comments and suggestions about your gaming experience.
Like most of your subscribers, I have been there at the beginning with the introduction of the Mattel handheld games to the present gaming systems.
However, there is no excuse as to what the PlayStation Corporation has done "across the board" to all their loyal customers worldwide. All that is asked, in my opinion, is to allow everyone the same opportunity to try to purchase the console on day one if it so desired by the consumer in the hopes that the 'hiccups" will hold at a minimum that always seems to plague a new console on launch day.
Both Microsoft and PlayStation are asking a great deal from their customers this year, especially with our current world financial situation to pay what is asking for each of the various version consoles along with the inevitable price increase for the new released games ($70.00 or more). The added frustration does not need to be burden on the consumer with PlayStation Marketing Team playing silly "mind games".
Metal Jesus and family of friends, look forward to future podcasts sharing both your thoughts along with your extensive experience in the video game world.

Steam is still the answer on PC. They have patched things up with EA(Sort of). They have their own streaming service on iOS & Android. They have been releasing retro stuff like crazy at crazy low prices. Sales are when you buy(Summer & Winter are usually the best sales). There is a place for controllers on PC in the modern day era(You choose what you like.. Xbox? PlayStation? 3rd party?) I find myself still being able to play all the same games as my console friends, just at lower prices than even the reduced console price, with the exception of Nintendo titles. Steam allows for physical backups if you are worried about such things. I never have to start over when I get a new PC or do major upgrades. I just log into Steam and all my old games work.. Usually faster and shinier than before! VR has made the PC more inclusive with tons of solutions to accommodate for someone who wants a PC with a console-like experience. Chassis’, ITX Mainboards, tricks for making large video cards fit and even handheld keyboard and mouse options for game configuration and such.
I try every generation to consider a console purchase and I can never justify it when I can already play the games I want on my PC that I already own. I am more hopeful this generation that I might find some games of interest. I still regretfully don’t own a Switch, which frankly interests me far more ❤️(I am still puttering with my New 3DS XL(Metroid Samus Returns and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past replay are current plays(I am doing a refresher for TLoZ: A Link Between Worlds). I got it for when I just want to curl up and play in bed(I have some ailments that currently keep me from my PC)
love your positivity and outlook Jason! I was able to secure my digital PS5 preorder on Amazon. I have a pretty nice PC that I have games pass on, so there's no need for me to get an xbox console, but it seems like a great value. I also try and play my hacked vita for remote PC and ps4 play as much as possible

Just recently got game pass on pc to try out flight simulator 2020 for $1, for first month. I was very impressed with the game selection. Sucks they just raised the price, but well worth it still. Reminds me of Netflix, how goood movies and shows are there and I'll watch them, but not go out and by the dvd, but instead of movies, its games. If something is super good, I'll go buy it later when I catch it on sale

$100 for a bluray drive, $70 first party games, Sony backpedaling on believing in "generations" with Miles Morales/Horizon being on PS4. Since you have plenty of BC games MJR, the Series X is the console for you. You can wait on the PS5, not seeing anything that's Day One, maybe you do. Personally I'll wait until GT7 is closer to launch and perhaps a black version of the console is released.
Hopefully game prices will get cheap again like they were with PS4, could find many games discounted a fair bit after a few months of release.

They always forget the huge plus of digital. If you go somewhere you can take your machine and literally bring all your games along with you. As long as you have an internet connection your entire collection is at your fingertips, with no worries of a scratched disc or anything.

My PC has been digital only for years, and I only ever buy games massively discounted
But PC games tend to be cheaper and drop in price so it's doable. Console games digitally rarely drop in price much so getting the second hand disks is still the cheapest way forward.

You've got competing digital stores on PC though whereas on console there is not so digital only is not the way to go for console as it locks you in to one single store. PC digital only is fine but if it was only 1 company they wouldn't have as many sales and discounts and stuff.

I’ll buy a PS 5 sometime next year. I at least wish it was backwards compatible with PlayStation 3. I still play tons of games on it. I totally agree with you about the physical drive. I would rather own disc games then downloading them so I know they are mine forever.
And the new cooling tech supposedly in the PS5 kind of scares me, I don't want to be a guinea pig (shudders in red ring). The Series X seems like a more pc designed system that doesn't mess around with experimental tech, I would be comfortable with a day one Xbox purchases vs PS5.
Plus as the digital games will be like $90 it would be insane to get digital only. Trade in is the only way to make that affordable.
@@ens0246 I'll say this about digital games at least on PC STEAM has lots of sales to help bring the cost down so that's good for me as a Linux PC gamer, and Nintendo has not been doing to bad with sales, but they need to get rid of the shovelware that floats to the top of the e-shop, and let the good quality games rise to the top. Microsoft, and Sony I can see having the high prices, and holding them at those prices for a long time, so on consoles I want the option of physical disc/game cards for as long as possible.
Also we need to not forget that even here in the US there are a lot of people who still can't get high speed internet needed for an all Digital ecosystem simply because they live a mile, or 2 outside of a city/town limits, and the ISP in those areas are too lazy to run lines to them, and serve them, or they just can't afford it because ISP price gouge them. Heck I'm paying almost $77 a month to Atlantic Broadband for 120Mbps/8Mbps with no equipment rental fees. 😔
