    Upwind starts - with prestart tactics in more maneuverable and faster accelerating boats. Bring it on! The repertoire for pre starts was largely unexplored during the last cup. Not enough time and not enough space and it seemed sometimes ... just no desire. Lets hope some real chances for tactical dial ups that can be passed so the real Cup provides time and space for prestarts this time.
    And then ... roll on Youth and Women's America's Cups. Be interesting to see if the compositions of the crews change to give women and youth sailors a chance to get experience.

    Excellent set up in the shed, about time some sponsors got on board your channel. A point to raise is that this fleet race is to set up a feeder channel into a foiling class. This opens up another whole class to re-invigorate sailing as a whole. Keep up the great work.

    Just watching the vlog and a really insightful point was made, the AC40s being used as a 'taster' for the event to come - planned or not, I think it is positive from that perspective. Oddly I don't see SailGP as a 'Competitor' at this point, the wider audience is not yet used to sailsport in these forms, and it is certainly not a regular Saturday night watch! In general I thought that this was a really interesting and informing conversation.

    Great video again. Thank you.
    On the format, i would like to see 2 race courses, so, when one race ends, its into the prep for the next, this would allow more match racing. This could at least work for the first round robin. But it probably would meet the requirements for the advertising partners demands for coverage of their products.

      This actually has a lot of potential, thinking about how a lot of olympic disciplines are filmed for TV, sometimes cutting between two or more competitions in parallel. It can produce an interesting build up especially if it's like quarter or semifinals.

  • @DriverDad58
    @DriverDad58 Před 10 měsíci

    Glad your all back! Rob nailed it with the comment regarding missing crosses in SailGP. This has been my biggest problem with SailGP. They'll switch away from an important cross to show a close-up of people on boats going fast. For new fans, the spectacle is important. But for those who want to watch a race, it's very frustrating. Also, SailGP seems to completely ignore shifts and puffs, which often have as much, if not more, of an affect on the outcome of the race vs pure boat speed. Lastly, the commentary for SailGP is often quite shallow. As was said "Look at the boats go fast!" only goes so far. I'm really hoping AC can do a much better job with the fleet racing with respect to these things. Do it like F1!

  • @davidr5597
    @davidr5597 Před 10 měsíci +5

    Another important aspect you're overlooking is the Race Committee setup, boat tracking and rules application . If that's not polished for the main Cup racing it will leave viewers frustrated with inconsistent decisions, 'wrong' decisions and such. Also the more of these events, the more attempts the media teams have to polish on screen overlays and info panels, as well as dealing with on-board audio streams. There is a lot of finicky detail that needs working out ahead of the 'main show'. I know you touched on production quality, but for the non-sailor viewers, this is all critical to the commercial success of the event. And without money, there is no America's Cup!

    • @MozzySails
      @MozzySails  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Race committee set up is a really good point. Iain Murray is PRO again (has been since AC34). Pretty sure it the same chief umpire.
      They're released race 'conditions' but I've not seen a set of racing rules yet. Last they were pretty similar to the modified World Sailing rules for fast grand prix raving (forgot proper name) which are very similar to Sail GP.

    • @jameslittlewood7821
      @jameslittlewood7821 Před 10 měsíci

      Last point is deeply spurious. The AC has always cost money to participate in, but the idea of the AC event itself as a commercial proposition is very new and not at all necessary.

    • @davidr5597
      @davidr5597 Před 10 měsíci

      @jameslittlewood7821 True, but it definitely impacts the quality of the event. And for example, it's money driving the decision by ETNZ to hold this event in Barcelona and not in NZ.
      True, the cup in some shape or form persists no matter if it's just two billionaires in a one-off match race or a multinational event like modern times.

    I'm beginning to wonder how visually entertaining this AC will be. With all the crew seated, facing forward for the duration of the race - all we will see will be the tops of their helmets. Compare this to SailGP, with crew members constantly crossing the boat, looking all around and onboard discussions/emotions. It will be interesting to contrast the coverage in Vilanova to the upcoming SailGP in Saint-Tropez.

    Never underestimate the ability of the broadcast package providers to make the coverage incoherent by cutting to another shot just as something is about to happen, be it a change of direction, a cross, or mark rounding. They don't seem to comprehend the relevant details of a race, instead preferring to cut to pretty-looking, well composed/balanced images, that provide no significant insight.

    I don't watch SailGP, because it's basically unwatchable. As a viewer, you are supposed to track how many boats? Even if they kept a steady angle, where you could remember who's who, where's up, where's down, it still would be difficult to absorb.
    But they don't!
    Match racing is the only sailing sport that works on TV. No matter how many cuts they make, from this angle, that angle, helicopter, motorboat, virtual, onboard, there are only two teams to follow, so I know what's going on.
    Making fleet racing a spectator's sport is mission impossible. You either make it all very boring visually, or extremely confusing.
    BTW - I don't race, but I sail most of my adult life, which means I'm way ahead of the average viewer.

      SailGP is great to wach.
      And easy to see what's going on.
      In my opinion, the AC is dull as dishwater.
      It's not really match racing when the boat in front always has clear wind.
      The fleet racing will probably be the only good bit.

      @@DavidHiveyZwift " *easy to see what's going on* "
      Maybe if you are already heavily invested into it, so you can pick it all up *despite* being constantly distracted with all the "picturesque" footage, of all the sponsors...
      I'm not at this stage.
      " *It's not really match racing when the boat in front always has clear wind* "
      I agree. It's *unreal* match racing.
      " *The fleet racing* "
      ...is not a spectator's sport. On a closed course, at least.

    AC was always different to sail GP
    AC always was hiding nothing share, sail GP having nothing to hide, all having same boats.
    Now with all teams covered and interviewed its good.
    English really thinking that's american football its interesting?
    Blady boring, ever ten seconds playing its a break of minutes.
    Then I watching cricket, not american football commercial crap.

    Tom! Love the format of this! I hope you get the boys together often for these kind of videos throughout the remainder of the cup season.

      I hope so too! It's good fun to talk boats. Hopefully we can cover some more technical stuff too in time
