Many Nikon shooters are aware of the AF Fine Tune feature found in most Nikon DSLR’s but in this video, Mark Cruz of Nikon Canada is looking closely at the AUTO AF Fine Tune feature. This feature is much more efficient than the manual way, and helps to automate the process of fine tuning your lenses.

I would like to see AF Fine Tune being able to store more saved values per lens because of zoom lenses so it can at least calibrate both the wide and telephoto end. Even going a step further by calibrating by different focal points and focus distances. Lastly, perhaps it would be better to initiate a 3 second countdown after pushing OK before it calibrates.
Very helpful video. I use a D750 and virtually always shoot in live view mode (landscape photographer). Am I correct in thinking that I don't need to fine tune, unless I switch to using the viewfinder?

I have watched so many of these videos lately, I consider myself an expert. Just kidding. This was by far the easiest to understand and in fact explained something none of the other videos had. Shoot through the VF and then compare to the LV image. I understand why and how, I am glad someone pointed out to do that. I have the D850 and with the 50mm 1.8G, images are tack sharp which is not the case with the 24-120 f4. I will test all my lenses this week. Question, does iso make a difference during testing and what about using a flash?

I just ordered and received a 200-500mm and I am quite disappointed with the first tries... I had tested one on my D850 and it was incredible. Even compared it at the time with the Tamron G2, which is really good too, and with its sigma counterparts, both versions (all 3 lenses lended by a friend working at sigma !) and my absolute choice was for the Nikon : all images at 200mm and all through 500mm were great, even at 5.6, which would probably be what aperture I would use that lens, and I wasn’t pleased with the extra 100mm on the other lens in term of quality. I even though : this is the first time Nikon gets out a lens that actually sells the same while being superior in quality !
But the 200-500mm I’ve just received seems off and not as sharp in terms of focusing.
Is there a specific way to proceed an auto fine tune for this lens ? Or if I got that right : I should do the test at 500mm (most lokely to use it at the far end) and at 5.6 ?
I switched to Z Camera system as my D500 and Tamron 70mm-200 2.8 combo was driving me nuts as the combo kept on back focusing and my subject I was trying to bring into focus where always out of focus. I had D500 for over a year with huge issues with the combo, more so leaning towards issue with the lens. Both Camera and lens had current firmware updates, I actually had much better pictures out of my inexpensive D5600.. So far the Z6 II has done a remarkable job with fast sports and landscape pictures etc..
Hello guys, this tutorial was very helpful, thanks a lot! Anyhow, I am experiencing something, that not sure is normal, I repeat the test on my Nikon D850 and every time I am getting completely different values ( -10 up to -18) is that normal behavior? Thanks a lot!
i have a nikon D800
so what about if i reach to 20+ and 20- and the lens still doesn't focus properly in the center (still off) but no problem focusing manually in the center. what is the next step to that?

So, a Z6 mirrorless camera doesn’t not need auto fine tune on a G2 Tamron lens?
I have a G2 24-70 with soft focus.
I find fine auto tuning my 105mm f/1.4 at f/2 works well. Tuning at f/2.8 produced erratic results for me and tuning at f/1.4 gives consistent results, but overdoes the tune (+8 instead of +4, which I confirmed with Spyder Lenscal is the correct setting). Just a pity you cannot use Snapbridge to conduct the whole process (never having to touch the camera seems like a good idea). Also, I find that a simple target, half white, half black is best. Anything too complex, like a FoCal target, seems to confuse the AF (which I guess shouldn't be all that surprising since it's designed to work with FoCal.
Steve Perry has a couple of good targets downloadable free from his website and they are both good, although I find the simple half black / white target the best one

Any recommendation on distance to the target when using a 105mm Nikon macro lens? They say 30 times the lens diameter which puts the lens about 5 feet or so from the target. Thanks

You need to do manual AF fine tune. Search on youtube, there are several methods.
When I use AF Fine Tune on my D700 nothing changes no matter what the range -20 or +20 is same as 0... any ideas??
Got the same problem with the Tamron 24-70 mm. No difference at al. All my other lenses are working well.

Hi Ivan,
You should try the following settings:
- Ensure you are in AF-S mode
- Use single-point AF
- You must make sure that the AF point selected in - Live View is directly in the centre (press the OK button to center the AF point - you can also tell that the AF point is centered when you see a red dot in the middle of the red AF point)
Other things to look for:
- Make sure the focus chart is not too close to your lens/camera
- Make sure the camera is able to focus on the test chart (make sure your AF point is not located on a all-black or all-white section of the chart)

I have seen similar but yours is very clear!
However I can not get a response pressing the AF button and movie REC buttons together.
It’s a simple process clearly layed out here and in the link you supplied.
If there is no other reason such as button assignments that may be inhibiting this, then my cam body is defective in some way.

I have nikon d750 or i use tamron ths lens..before this i was used nik 24-120 f4
I swear that i didn't found any any any noice(in 24-120 lots of noice when use 1000 + iso)
I face a problem that when i take full length picture or i was assure that focus points at face but when see my pics at pc monitor, i always shocked that lens pick background subject or subject found blurry(pick sharp focus in background)
Or when take horizental pics,pics always perfect..problem in just full length vertical pictures
At 75mm or 78mm portraits lens give ne awsome super sharp result

So if i use the viewfinder this is useless And i should turn off the saved values in finetune ? And if light changes slightly the contrast will be different on rear screen , but not through viewfinder
Save some money and instead of buying a test gadget us a tape measure. Extent the tape measure out to 16 inches, set a a 45 degree angle and focus on 8 inches. I use 8 to a distance that the number 8 fills the box of the focus point then use the 16th of an inch marks on the tape to check focus. It is fast and easy once you do it a few times and it's worth checking. Keep the 8 inch mark at the same height as the camera lens center. Only 2 out of my 8 Nikon DSLRs needed to have any adjustment made and they were for older non D lenses. Don't forget to switch the VR function off.
Why AF fine tune of Nikon Mirrorles Cameras is not explained .There is no video on it .
Because it is like Mark explained in the video, since the focus is determined on the sensor of a mirrorless camera there will be no issues that for fine tune to correct.
Is this absolutely necessary to do? I have a D7500 with a Tamron 150-600mm both brand new.
Only if you're having issues. Won't hurt but if your pics are sharp/in focus you may not have to.
@@GlenEly Thank you!! Yes the pictures are great in focus no issues. I was advised to do this specially when you get a Non-Nikkor lens.
@@GlenEly I need help with one more thing please, THIS IS DRIVING ME INSANE!!. When I take a picture of a bird perched on the very top of a tree wherein the background is the Sky, THE BIRDS are just dark NO detail!! I have tried ISO, different metering modes, umm name it I have done it, what am I doing wrong or what should I do so that heavy backlit Subjects are not dark! I was used to Film camera and I just started to take pictures again after 14 years and am having the toughest time learning this stuff..

I own the d90 and the d7100. The d90 focuses accurately (on 50mm f1.8 G; 17-70MM f3.5-4.5 G, and the Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro lens) and takes great pictures without AF on all lenses. The d7100 is all over the ballpark and I have great difficulty getting AF to work on ANY lens, any supposed correction is near the limits (+17 or more). It seems the camera body is out of adjustment.
As a result the d7100 sits in a drawer unused for close to 2 years now. In my opinion the need for any AF beyond 2 or 3 indicates poor quality control by Nikon and is one of the reasons they are on the skids
dell177 or maybe you did something wrong in your process. Did you go to Nikon to have it checked ?
I had an issue with a D850. But I first though it was I, that handled it badly with its 45mp (coming from a D90, D700, D600, D750...). Then after a year of struggling, I went over to them and had it checked. They took 3 weeks because it was summer but when I got back, they gave me a brand new camera even though I had shoot maybe 20K pictures already. ;)
I had that problem with my D300 and concurrently with my D7000. The calibration helped tremendously! I used the print out copy and tweaked it again. I am the only person who LOVED my D7000! Good luck! I still shoot with a D7100 and am happy with it.

Nikon's AF is so Wonky, and the manufacturing is so Sloppy, that there needs to be a Fine Tuning. Nikon design a better AF system, one that works
Basically nikon autofocus system is useless,canon is 1000 times more superior than nikon for focus,and nikon software developers are useless fellow,even a 1000rs mobile is more superior than nikon af system.m shifting to canon,I have tolerated enough to nikon,nikon D850 is one of the worst af system ever made by nikon
